54:46 Yes you are correct. The city is divided. Nova Gorica is the Slovenian side and Goricia is the Italian side. This happened after WW2 due to the division of territory between Italy and Yugoslavia.
The first time I saw this route I was like "Oh hell no, this is going to be boring. No high mountains, what's wrong with you?". But I gotta admit after the podcast and looking at it again, I'm kinda excited. This could actually work and make it a really interesting race.
The Dolomites are part of the Alps (of the Southern Limestone Alps to be precise)! We split the Alps in "sectors". The Dolomites are characteristic mostly for the geology and their rock composition (but true, they were historically "distinct" because of the politics and part of Italy belonging to the Austro-hungarian empire till the end of WW I).
I LOVED riding the Port de Bales in the Pyrenees -- hardly any traffic when I did it (in 2007) and my favorite road descent ever -- mostly fast and flowing, but not super-dangerous, and brand-new pavement at that time!
If WvA can get close to his 2021 or 2022 TdF form he could legitimately fight for the win on 19/21 of these stages, that's insane. I know a lot of people aren't happy about this parcours, but I think that if teams really race it this could be the most entertaining Giro of the past few years. Not so much GC action, but the stage-hunting roster should be absolutely stacked.
I am surprised how bad of a jo the commentators do when having to learn names of places (and sometimes names of riders, yes inam looking at you Sean Kelly). Just ask smb from that country. It is not that hard these days.
@ Nobody it talking about accent. I am talking about pronouncing K, C J Y etc the right way not the Anglo-Saxon way for every rider. It is the same with other sports. P.S..: Rob Hatch is the man and he is not obnoxious at all.
Roglic is going to cook anyone not named Remco, Tadej or Jonas there. The only exception is maybe Ayuso and Jorgenson if arrives ready to fly - which he may. I actually think Egan should take a swing. I don’t envision him getting over Roglic, but he should try to peak for it and see what his limit is.
A random mountain in Utah? Consider a not-so-random mountain in Wyoming. The Teton National Park is beautiful and there are several Epic climbs near Jackson Hole.
It will be an epic race decided on the 18th stage with lots of great stages, but no top contenders fireworks until the very last mountain stage. And Simon Yates will finally win his Giro. Roglic second, Carapaz third. Wout van Aert will win 5 stages (at least).
I think if Wout has a dream run in the spring and win Flanders and Roubaix, he will take that form to Giro and win numerous stages. If Wout does not do well in the classics, I think he will go to the Giro angry af and win numerous stages.
I would love to see Pithie on the Bora squad. I think it would fit well protecting primoz and having lots of opportunities for himself. I think Bora will send Roglic,Hindley,Martinez,Tratnik,Moscon,Aleotti,Pithie/one of Van Dijke twins ,Sobrerro
On paper the organisers will say backloading will keep the suspense until the final week but the reality is that the race will be preceded by two weeks of tedium. Hope i’m wrong but still scarred by the lame 2022 and 2023 Giros. Riders make it happen!
@ I mean, same, but if he were going to podium any, this would be the most likely. Low TT kms, lots of punchy, hill stages, a gravel stage, no altitude.
This season is going to be amazing because 6 best cyclist will battle in diffrenet races a lot.Pogacar will battle Vingegaard in Criteriim du Dauphine,Tour de France and maybe Vuelta a Espana. Also tadej will battle Evenepoel at Criterium du Dauphine, Tour de France and Ardeens classics while only on Tour de France he will battle Roglic. When it comes to Vingeegard and Roglic they will battle at Volta ao Algarve and Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.Pogacar will batlle Van der Poel and Van Aert at Ronde van Vlaandren. On top of that you have 3 Grand Tours which are always show for themselfe.I can't wait till 2025 season kick on in Down Under.
If the Cortina d'Ampezzo stage would happen this year like then, it would not even start. Just like, yes you guys are too young, lucky bastards, the famous stage over the Gavia with Andy Hampsten, Eric Breukink and Johan Van der Velde. A stage that would never make it into the parcours today, which was also way harder then the Cortina stage.
disappointed with the lack of +2000M climb, I am aware they often encountering weather issues in the past editions but these legendary climbs is why I like the Giro.
I don’t think Bora should throw away Hindley’s GC but it’s not comparable to me that they both won one giro considering Roglic won his more recently and won the Vuelta last year …
Roglic is way better, its not even close. At first Hindley has to bounce back. 2024 he was not really competitive. But to be fair roglic has the talent of crashing quite often.. IMO: peak yates is better than Hindley. Ayuso maybe too. Carapaz is 50:50. Tiberi in 2025 also close. Landa is Landa. Gaudu, bernal, S Yates i would prefer Hindley. Without roglic he is in the mix for top 5!? But you can say the same about his teammate Martinez.
Bora has decided to send him to the Giro and Tour, while Roglic himself wanted to do the combination of Tour and Vuelta... Thus the team has decided for him (Roglic and Hindley will be the captains of the team in the Giro. Vlasov and Lipowitz will not participate I thought ?).... Primoz would have loved to go for that 5th Vuelta win, despite the fact that Vingegaard and Pogacar are also riding the Vuelta... (Although UAE he has not confirmed yet that Pogacar will ride the Vuelta.)
The Dolomites (Italian: Dolomiti [doloˈmiːti]),[1] also known as the Dolomite Mountains, Dolomite Alps or Dolomitic Alps, are a mountain range in northeastern Italy. They form part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The northern and southern borders are defined by the Puster Valley and the Sugana Valley
Looks like a boring(ish) first 2 weeks - then spicy 3rd week. Only 3 summit finishes too. Perhaps the organizers are afraid of May Italian unpredictable weather ?
@matejstankovic9843 (I think he can do top 10 if he would really try. But to be fair: his lowest weight was 77kg. He has not a GC specificly training plan this season. I think he will hunt stages, and sprints for Kooij. I'm curious 🙂
Benji, Mortirolo is just a long rampa with a view only at the top - nothing special. It's nice if you're a spectator because riders' speed is low, that's about it. What you're actually looking for is Gavia
Thats a weird statement from RCS about Tudor. Why wouldnt Tudor send both anyway? Its likely their only GT of the year right? They arent one of the guranteed pro teams (Israel and Lotto) So they wont be getting the Tour or Vuelta anyway...
Is Benji really this clueless or deliberately missleading? Not mentioning that Grappa and Mortirolo are both tackled form their worst sides, while hyping up the stages is extremely dishonest imo... Disappointed Patrik just kinda went with it.
I think you guys are way too optimistic about this route. All these downhill finishes are gonna be a snoozefest especially with Bora and Roglic controlling. The route is a disgrace.
Benji for GC
Benji > Aranburu

A lot of weird unpredictable stages.
And peaking quite late. For GC I think stage 7, 16, 19 and 20 will be key. But a lot will be happening in the tail end of this GC.

Nova Gorica is pronounced with a /ts/ sound rather than č, similar to ts in cats
