Growing up in the 1980s and 90s, Sony was the Flagship Brand for almost all things electronics and Samsung were perceived as a low-end brand.
Fast Forward to 2003 I bought a Samsung Yepp MP3 Player and I was blown away by it, and it changed the way I thought about Samsung products.
Then it seemed like all of a sudden, for me at least, by 2010 Sony was not the flagship company they used to be and Samsung was the Flagship company for almost all things electronics.
This is the story about the how Samsung replaced Sony as the King of the electronics industry.
It’s a story about leadership and it begins with Sony’s founders Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita.
Ibuka and Morita were engineers who met as researchers for Japan’s Navy Wartime Research Committee during WWII.
After the war, Morita saw an article about Ibuka’s plans for a business venture and he reached out to Ibuka to join the business.
In 1946, Morita and Ibuka founded the Tokyo Telecommunication Engineering Corporation on a rented floor of a department store.
The company’s technology was limited in the beginning but Morita and Ibuka had a wonderous vision for the company, which was to contribute to society by providing new products to consumers that were based on liberal, open corporate culture.
To compliment this vision, Morita and Ibuka centered the company around brilliant founding principles of Freedom and Open-mindedness that in time was in-grained in the corporation’s culture leading them to produce so many ground-breaking products for the next 50 years.
Samsung was founded before Sony in 1938 by Lee Byung-Chul as a small export business selling fruits, vegetables, and dried fish.
Eventually, Samsung branched out into a variety of industries, such as insurance, securities, and retail.
Samsung Electronics was established in 1969 and humbly started producing home appliance parts for Sanyo Electric Company.
Then, without the technology to produce colored TVs, they started producing black and white TVs in 1970 which were outdated by then.
Samsung eventually produced colored TVs by 1976 and also began to produce a diverse array of products, such as microwaves, washing machines, and refrigerators.
On top of that, they established vertical integration by manufacturing components in-house.
In 1980, Samsung acquired the government-owned telecom equipment maker Korea Telecommunications Corporation and started developing switchboards, telephone, and fax manufacturing systems.
For a long time, Samsung products lacked the technology to produce expensive and more profitable products and the Samsung brand was perceived as cheap and low-quality.
Three factors led to why Sony declined so quickly in the digital age.
First, when Idei became President, Sony had a lot of debt and was in poor financial shape due to major acquisitions in music and movies along with expansion overseas and Idei had that looming over him and he made decisions shift to focus on short-term profit.
Second, Ohga put off identifying his successor until he was close to his mandatory age, and by the time he selected Idei, he did not have time to mentor him.
Under the leadership of Lee, Samsung’s strategy to dominate the electronics industry came from two tactics, Aggressive Investment and Speed.
This strategy originated from the company’s approach to their DRAM business.
When Samsung entered the DRAM market in the 1980’s they were 5 years behind their competitors in technology.
In efforts to close the gap, Samsung completed its first production facility is just 6 months, a project that usually took two to three years.
Samsung managers and engineers simultaneously managed the design, plans, and construction of the facility, sleeping at an on-site barracks, only going home once a week to change clothes.
Today, Sony is led by its new President Kenichiro Yoshida and under his direction, the company is doubling down on content as they recently made a $2 Billion acquisition of EMI Music Publishing.
Sony is now the largest music publishing company in the world with an insane library of 4.3 million songs and growing.

Yes Nobuyuki Idei wasn't experience enough to become Sony President in April 1995 and eventually Sony CEO in April 1999. Akio Morita death was October 1999 not in 1994 but he had a stroke in June 1993 had to retire later in 1994.

This is why Samsung changed its strategy post-reform. This is less talked about, but Samsung changed their strategy again to foster innovation. They give funding and let lower ranked management to develop new products and refine them. Basically a form of decentralization inside a centralized organization.

Main factor of Samsung growth are money from its sponsor Jewish Rothschilds family. Samsung with its currently average quality is their main weapon to fight off Japanese high quality manufacturers (e.g. Panasonic / Technics, Sharp, Sony and so on) The same scenario is performed in motor industry. Average but incredibly rich and advertised Kia / Hyundai against legendary high quality Toyota / Lexus. The winner of this Jewish (attackers) vs. Japanese (defendant) trade war will be only one.. People Republic of China!

Chris “made in Japan” is a synonym of perfection throughout centuries. From shogun castles, katana swords, silk clothing to digital era!! My own experience is the best proof of that. A Toyota car. 10 years of perfection without any problems. Above 200 000 miles and car is still in excellent condition. Panasonic TOUGHBOOK personal computer is tough and extraordinary well built. I can even not remember single “freezing” of system. Operating is so smooth. (and my friend with Dell computer had got some issues despite of the same specs..) Panasonic TV is excellent. Panasonic heat pump is the most efficient on the market. Panasonic HIT photovoltaic modules have got the best yield ratio. Panasonic fridge. Panasonic washing machine. Panasonic shaver. Panasonic trimmer. Panasonic toothbrushes. Every little piece of equipment is very good. Made in Japan is simply the best in every industry (rockets, tanks, high building in seismic terrain, shipyards and so on) but morons driven by greedy companies and their marketing prefer to buy Apple or Google (samsung) devices. Japanese quality is build into their national spirit and renowned pursuit of perfection attitude. The only lack for Japanese industry in digital era is their own home developed operating system like iOS or Android.. Japs would do that but USA political power has not allowed them. Who remembers a Linux system!? Linux was developed by some Indian companies and renowned Panasonic Corporation :)

Samusung is noted on London Stock Exchange (The same with kia/hyundai). City of London was called “Jewish Vatican” throughout centuries. The most high building in City of London (HQ of Rothschild Holding) is shaped like big calipers. Sign of Freemasonry. Now look

Sony products are mostly experimental, they're very innovative but there's a down side. In some products there'll be issues and the customer has to suffer. Samsung on the other hand produce less innovative products, they even copy from other companies. As far as their mid-range phones are concerned, they aren't as good as their competitors. All their smartphones doesn't get updated to latest version of Android on time and there are lot of blot wears which makes the phone slower, especially low end and mid-range.
My self, as a tech enthusiast loves Sony products, there'll be few glitches but I feel it's better than releasing the same product in new case.

Samsung is a very forward thinking company. Many years ago, Samsung was the second largest producer of HDD but decided to sell it all off and exit making HDD entirely. Instead, switched to SSD and focused on solid-state memory technology. A bold move that paid off in many dividends. Now they're investing heavily in batteries for electric vehicle. Not existing lithium-ion battery technology, but solid-state batteries. Will it pay off? Only time will tell.

I'll echo the positive comments below concerning both the quality and content of this video; fantastic work! Request: I'd like to see a video on TOSHIBA. They've been around for almost 150 years (1875!) and were certainly once the other Japanese "Powerhouse" (SONY & TOSHIBA). While most are aware of recent troubles, no doubt LEADERSHIP has been their biggest downfall as you so effectively communicated as "key" to the SONY/SAMSUNG tale, this certainly applies to TOSHIBA as well. Considering the wealth of inventions they've had notwithstanding one of technology's MOST important invention: FLASH MEMORY, it'd be interesting to see a video that posits the possibility of their rise again. For a company who has invented so much technology and spends [relatively] nothing on advertising instead opting to reinvest it into R&D, it'd be a shock that a company who has all the aforementioned qualities and has invested SO HEAVILY into "TOSHIBA AMERICA" after having to sell off so much of their various divisions and technology they created - what they MUST do to possibly make a comeback would certainly be both an interesting video and, quite frankly, as wonderfully insightful this, your video is, might well be the key to their fate. My point: As a video producer myself, I must say your video storytelling is extremely impressive and you might well could create the very "blueprint for TOSHIBA" to make a comeback. Sadly, as huge as they are, they don't seem to know what to do; you seem more "poised" to instruct this "giant" as to what to do! That's both a high compliment to you and, if you could pull such off, such a video might be taken quite seriously by the [almost] 150-year-old GIANT that is the TOSHIBA Corporation (even cursory research shocks most people just how large and many divisions this company has; IOW, most people simply don't realize just how truly expansive this company really is and, in their "heyday" - which parallels SONY's - just how successful they've been) and take your intrinsic talent into a realm of both global name and financial recognition beyond your wildest expectations. Just a thought based on a request. Either way, your:20 documentary was thoroughly entertaining, informative, and quite educational! Kudos to you sir!
Note: I penned this comment in such a rush please forgive the fact it's not well constructed IMHO; but I hope, in an overall context, it makes sense.
A couple of links if interested:
    -->> www.toshiba.co.jp/worldwide/about/history.html
    -->> www.toshiba.co.jp/worldwide/about/history_chronology.html
I will note, I've done a bit of research and, sadly, part of their recent, most serious problem was created by the Westinghouse company both "talking them into financing and securing approval for the world's first nuclear reactor in...40 years(??) here in the USA and Westinghouse basically lying to them about the progress and ongoing cost. Of course, I fault TOSHIBA for not realizing until the said reactor was, basically, 75-80% complete they Westinghouse had lied about the cost which, even at 60-ish% - I believe thereabouts - the costs at that point had so far exceeded the TOTAL estimated cost - like, more than double the cost for 100% - that they literally had to abandon a [approx] 80% COMPLETED(!!!) brand NEW Reactor and literally "walk away" like one would a mortgage on a house that's more than 2/3rds paid! Either way, it's an interesting story when you consider their inception (1800s!), their many inventions, their successes, the many accolades, and innovations these many, many years and now they are on the verge of either failure or comeback. It would make for a rather interesting story I believe you....Y-O-U could tell better than most...after comparing your videos to others, you certainly possess the capability if so inclined for a great story.
Final note: I am JUST an individual and in NO WAY have ANY affiliation with TOSHIBA whatsoever other than I'm a consumer who has a good experience with several of the products BUT, moreover, I SIMPLY think it would make for a great story told through your talents/capabilities. I certainly don't have any...I guess you'd say, financial/vested interest or incentive to make this request other than - as stated - IMHO I believe it would make for a great story/video by you. Cheers mate.

Sony doesn't seem aggressive with investments and technology. As you mentioned in the video, they are focused on short term profits.
Samsung is amazing with silicon chip products. I expect Sony to be a leader in electronics especially silicon and they could have bought/partnered with other companies in Japan such as Hitachi, Toshiba. Having to produce their own parts will reduce the cost of building other products such as TVs, smartphones.
Sony's camera and camera sensor business doing good but the camera in their smartphones lags. I was surprised with Huawei's P20 Pro where Sony could have easily beat or equal that.

This is evident since almost every sony product that comes out never needs a recall. Their products do as advertised and their warrenty honoring is on point. Sony was never a good product, just over priced so perceived better. (sold if for years) Samsung did the same thing Sharp did years ago. They also had a premium product at a very affordable price.
