    What’s really impressive is how amazing the drums end up sounding on this whole album

    TLA did a mix of one of my band’s songs that to this day is one of the absolute best rock mixes I’ve ever heard… and it was never released 😫. There was a disagreement with the suits & it got shelved (they still own it though so it will likely stay that way). We’ve worked with a lot of hugely successful mix engineers and his just plain stood out as a perfect powerful rock mix. There were some heated arguments about it. This was several years ago and I’m still thinking about how damn good it was. Anyway, great video!!

      I'd love to hear what TLA does with non-major label releases (assuming your band isn't secretly huge and you're just hiding). Dude is a total wizard but I've only heard what he's done with huge bands.

    I like how he`s talking about Critter and Atom Willard. Knowing Atom is a beast on the drums, he probs wouldn`t have laid off the hi-hats lol. But great video

    The irony that I have always held this record up for having some of the best natural rock drum sounds of all time.
    I guess it’s good to know that mix engineers are always going to struggle with cymbal bleed regardless of drummer/engineer/studio.

      As far as I'm aware video intro type thingos help in the algorithm somehow with discoverability. Not saying I like them but I'd assume thats why they are doing intros now.

      They need to turn the music up in the intro. his talking is getting in the way of that sweet double kick.

    Why would a band of this calibre be recorded badly? He should try mixing my awful high school recordings

    • @lannyfce4786
      @lannyfce4786 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i just looked it up and the most i can find is it may have been tom delonge in his "home studio" and then the tracks were just sent off to be mixed, which could explain poor mic choices/placement

    • @kurdtjohn
      @kurdtjohn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lannyfce4786 some of that record was recorded in the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606… which makes it weirder. Probably the engineer’s fault? (RIP, Critter)

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'd say in this case the problem is loud bright hats (very normal in punk bands) some situations that might work here it didn't seem to. Maybe Tom liked that sound when recording it. All personell involved have had great drum sounds so don't think it's a single factor.

    • @kurdtjohn
      @kurdtjohn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JimijaymesProductions also, Atom hits the drums like it owes him his kidney, and Zildjian A Customs are notoriously bright in a mix

    • @dieter_parker863
      @dieter_parker863 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They went into studio 606 to record all drums in a single session after everything else was finished in Tom’s home studio. There is actually footage online showing this. Atom is really a hard hitter and lots of bright cymbals were used. The hats looked like New Beats to me. Here is a link to one of these recordings (different song but same session): th-cam.com/video/RsJWd8zEG5Q/w-d-xo.html
