    Thank you! I was able to discover my wires on the RV plug were loose. I would not have had the courage to attempt this blind. Your video comprehensively showed me clearly how to do it! Sharing one’s knowledge is selfless and beneficent. You saved my family a few hundred dollars in repair costs for which we are grateful. Times as they are every dollar counts. We are praying for peace, prosperity and happiness for you and your family friend-May you stay free.

    This was an awesome step by step representation of how to troubleshoot my shore power issues. Thank you for putting this together - it saved me having a tech come out just to tell me that I need to replace my ATS. Mine is sticking on the generator side and not switching. I poked around a bit and got the spring or whatever holds the tension to re-engage and now it seems to be switching as expected. Now at least I'll know what the problem is when it occurs again and it won't necessarily ruin another camping trip!

    This guy has his act together !!! Very professional, cautious, and straight to the point. Fast forward whenever necessary so as not to waste time waiting for him to remove screws, etc. I've looked all over the internet, and everybody wants to talk about resetting the GFI. That's all well and good if you have power coming into the coach to begin with. I had been doing some investigating, but didn't have a clue what a transfer switch was until I watched his video. I had already checked power to the end of the power cord, but had nothing inside the coach. When I watched this video and found no power inside the transfer switch, it became obvious that the problem was between the plug going into the coach and the transfer switch. Just as he described, somebody neglected to tighten a connection on the back side of the input plug going into the coach. Can't thank you enough for helping me track down the source of my issue. Bible Thumber says it so well "by far and above all the other videos on this problem". God Bless

Definitely subscribing! I watched several others which were good to ok but nothing as step by step show and explaining along the way like this! Now I know where to start and what to do. I've been working on my rig with no power replaced the shore cord$$$ replaced a GFCI circuit plug in the bathroom still no power but now I know what to do! Thanks again! Excellent!

    Hello and thank you for your informative video. You explained everything to the point where I think I actually understood what you were talking about. That was great! Thanks! My portable heater I was running in my RV shut off last night by itself and I assumed it tripped the breaker at the house where I'm getting my power from with my 100' ft. 8 gage extension cord. When I inspected the breaker box nothing had been tripped. I then noticed the male end of my extension cord was black and so was the electrical outlet where it was plugged into. I immediately unplugged it and checked my female end of the cord and it looked fine. Even the adapter I have hooked in between the extension cord and my RV plug, looked okay to me. Nothing black or burnt. So bought a new 100 footer 8 gage extension cord. Replaced the electrical outlet with a GFI and the outlet gave me a green light and my extension cord lit up so I assumed I had power to my outlets in my RV... but I don't. So here I've been running off my RV battery all night and all day and night again. I figured I will run tmy second portable heater tonight and troubleshoot my RV cord tomorrow and then my fuse box and see what's up. I'm not sure where my transfer switch box is but I will track it down. We had a bunch of rain a few days ago and the ground is still wet and I think it was a bad heater to begin with and that maybe my old ext. cord was getting too old and showing signs of wear and tear. I just don't understand why it fried my cord instead of tripping the breaker. But I think I answered my question in the sentence right before that. So wish me luck and thanks again.

    • @hesty32
      @hesty32  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      good luck! It is possible you tripped the GCFI in the RV. Often times there is one in the kitchen or bathroom that actually protects the other standard outlets 'downstream'. easy check and I have run into that before

    • @n2audiodiane
      @n2audiodiane 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes ive already tried the GFCI. There is one in the bedroom right next to the breakers and fuses. I push the "test" button and than the "reset". I hear it click. But still no power in any outlets. I will keep troubleshooting. Thx

    Great job...... best instructional video I have seen in a while. One thing I might add, I always take several photographs of anything before I take it completely apart just in case i forget how something goes back in place. How often do we do a job and say hey where did that screw or wire come from the photos will often tell me.

No wonder the switching box cover was hot to the touch and the shore power died during prolonged air conditioner usage. Also found rust inside the highest point of the switching housing indicating a water leak from the roof at some point.

Also my transfer box is mounted to the floor with the lid facing up. I saw another video that said transfer switchers should always be mounted vertically on a wall but didn’t explain why. Eileen Chesney I’m sorry to say but there is a good chance you caught a wire with the brad nailer and it shorted out. Is there any way you can check behind where you were nailing and see? It also could be a GCFI outlet. Check in the kitchen area and the bathroom area to for a GCFI outlet that is tripped.

    question:
    If i am installing solar into an Rv with existing electrical. It has Generator and Shore already. I should assume it has a transfer switch to manage this. Now If I want to add an inverter ran off batteries... is the solution to add ANOTHER transfer switch? therefore the shore/gen gets sorted first and then feeds the subsequent transfer switch. I want to default with solar inverter but have the option of shore/gen.
    thanks in advance if you can respond.

    • @hesty32
      @hesty32  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pretty sure you want your solar to go straight to batteries (well with a solar controller/converter) when you run off solar you are actually running off batteries to protect the panels from overdraw. Not super knowledgable on the actual workings there though

    • @hesty32
      @hesty32  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just reread your question and yes I believe you can either swap to a 3 way transfer switch or add another 2 way up stream to in effect get a 3 power option

    • @hestermannmotorwerks
      @hestermannmotorwerks 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are getting power into your breaker box but not out of the the breaker box, it has to be something there in the box. I’d start checking power in the wires and narrow it down. It’s uncommon but breakers can go bad. They can also be deceiving and look like they are on but are actually tripped. Maybe start by flipping them all on then off. Since you mentioned outlets, I’m assuming we are talking bout the 110 side. But your lights are probably 12v so maybe start with the main breaker since that is common spot for power to the inverter for the 12v side of things

      @@gamingwithraymond5664 Most common issue for 110v is a hidden GCFI that is popped. Check in the bathroom, under a flip up counter in the kitchen, etc. For the 12v side, I would check power getting to the inverter. But if there is 12 v in the fuses side of your breaker panel then I would think your inverter is good. It is possible it is something else but you just have to start tracing wires at that point.

    While this is a helpful video, I do take issue with using the proximity tester when troubleshooting a specific problem. The issue is that when not using a meter, you never verified the neutral return was intact, you only verified the hot leg was hot, and still, not knowing the actual voltage. Frankly, starting at the transfer switch would have been best as this is the proverbial for in the road for the 120v system. Thanks!

    I am going to test the TS in my rig. I experienced a power surge that fried my microwave and refrigerator. I replaced the converter, but the overhead lights do not work, nor do some of the plugs. My power steps will not remain out when I flip the switch. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to fix it? Finding available service in my area is nearly impossible as they are booked up for weeks with work.

    • @hesty32
      @hesty32  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really can’t troubleshoot that without looking at it but my guess is that you have two issues going on. The steps are a 12 volt system in every rig I’ve ever seen. The TS, fridge inop plugs etc are on a 120 volt system so I think the two are probably unrelated. For the steps, I recommend clean and lubricate. Amazing what that can do. Then see what they do. For the lights, most of them are 12 volt so I would check fuses (small 12 volt ones like in a car) and test the switches and lift fixtures.
      For the inop plugs that is on the 120v system. I’d check the circuit breakers and the the GCFI outlets in the bathroom and kitchen. Sometimes there is a hidden one under a folding countertop or something. Probably 80% of the time some outlets work and some don’t it’s a flipped GCFI. Good luck!

      you may find some hints by looking at the fuse/circuit breaker panel and seeing if the functioning circuits are all on certain fuses/circuit breakers and the non functioning ones are on another. From your description, it doesn't sound like there is a break down between 110v AC and 12v DC. You could try reseting all the circuit breakers, Occasionally they will trip but don't look like they are tripped.

    • @hesty32
      @hesty32  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all the rigs I have worked on, the starter for the generator gets power from the engine battery. So I don't think the transfer switch can have any effect on the generator starting. More likely is there is an issue on the circuit providing power from the engine battery to the starter on the generator.

      hesty32 possibly. This literally just started. The generator transfer switch stopped working several days ago and a couple days ago my generator won’t start. It even makes the lights go completely out after trying a couple times to turn it over. And it definitely acts like it’s not getting enough battery power to turn over. However, the engine starts right up and the battery is literally just barely a year old this month. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      I will take a look at the circuit the battery cable runs to directly on its way to the generator. Is there a way to test that circuit in the circuit panel under the hood for dummies? It’s a 1994 fleetwood pace arrow. Any info/help would be much appreciated.

      @@Stephrae70 the lights dimming when you start it is a classic symptom of low battery. Is it the coach lights that dim? If so, your generator is probably ties to the coach batteries not the engine battery. Some rigs will charge the coach batteries while the engine is running. Have you tried starting the generator while the engine is running? If the transfer switch is out, the coach batteries probably arent getting charged and that would make sense that the generator doesn't;t have enough juice to start. I recommend checking your coach batteries

      hesty32 yes the way it is set up, the two coach batteries are tied into the main engine battery. I do start and run the engine for about 30 minutes every morning and evening to keep the coach batteries charged because I do not start my generator every day. But that makes sense now that you’re saying that. And yes I do start my engine to start my generator because it’s an Oman 7000 and it seems like it starts easier when I do that. It also looked like my coach batteries may have leaked some at some point recently. I will clean them up with some baking soda and make sure there’s enough distilled water and see if it makes a difference. Up until this last few days, everything has been running great. Sigh.
      I do understand that the coach batteries being drained is because lack of charging due to the transfer switch and lack of charging from the generator. But I’ll clean the batteries regardless. They’re also only one year old.

      Is it on a 50 amp rig? They have 240 coming in so they are two ‘hot’ wires a black and a red

    Ok i changed my pd switch but still only have power if I hold it down it keeps kicking out

      Unfortunately that probably means you still have a fault ‘downstream’ . Possible that the incoming voltage is either low or high but more likely there is too much draw somewhere. Probably a short. Also a very slight chance that the new switch is bad. You could try turning everything off, flipping all the circuit breakers etc. Put power back on then turn things on one at a time to see what circuit is causing the problem.

    I can't get anyone nor any manufacture where to find a good quality Transfer Switch that will switch from shore power ..and/or solar ...and/or generator to supply power to a Class B+ RV and charge batteries ....yet its done everyday.

      Im not a solar smart guy but my understanding is that the Solar power actually comes into your inverter. The inverter comes into the breaker box "downstream" from your transfer switch. Then from the inverter is part of your breaker panel. This allows you to select which circuits will run on the batteries. For example, you DON"T want the A/C circuit powered by inverter (or solar). But again, Im not a solar tech and recommend you find some other expertise to give you advise there
