Fire Trucks Wait On A Train! Emergency Response Units Stuck At Railroad Crossing! House Fire Waiting

- Emergency response units on a call held up by long fast CSX freight train at level railway crossing. Walton Fire department responding on an emergency run. Right after the locomotives got to the grade crossing you can hear sirens as 2 emergency vehicles approach. This is a railway crossing with bells, gates and lights. The fire department is Engine Company 301 from Walton Kentucky. The railroad is an old Louisville & Nashville Railroad line ( L&N ) known as the Short Line or LCL Line. Since I filmed this, the trains on this line have nearly doubled in length to save money. Some trains take 11 or 12 minutes to pass. Precision Scheduled Railroading ( PSR ) has been implemented and trains can routinely have up to 200 cars with locomotives on the front, middle and sometimes rear of the trains. Thanks for watching! At 01:30 there was Southern Pacific auto rack with SSW markings. Plus, some of the Union Pacific auto racks had SP markings. Happy railroading everybody!!!

Everyday occurrence where highways and railroad tracks cross at grade. As stated above not all trains can announce schedule or stay on schedule. In small communities there is no way to reroute first responders so they get hung up do to trains. Depending on where the station was located in relation to the tracks, even if they could have communicated with the train to get it to stop, at its weight and speed I doubt it could have stopped at or before the crossing.
When I was a firefighter I remember having to wait for trains at the crossing. Its not rare but people think its interesting.
Yep, a fact of life. WE have a train crossing near one of the ambulance stations I work at. Often get held up waiting for the suburban 6 car train to pass (adds about 30-45 seconds to response time). Taking an alternative takes even longer.
Check out this fire station in Shelbyville Ky. The railroad track goes down the middle of 11th Street and is only 10 feet from the fire station. Back when my husband and I both ran with the firehouse (he hung up the gear four years ago), we got a fire call to the area outside the next town over late one night. My husband beat me out the door, and he and the other guys on the engine tanker were responding on the call with another engine from the next county in front. They were on the country road leading to the call location, and all of a sudden the railroad crossing lights for the tracks crossing that road lit up! The driver of our engine hit the brakes, but the driver of the engine in front hit the gas, and my husband said they were all "WHAT THE F$%&?" The front engine made it across the tracks-FIVE SECONDS before the train came screaming through the crossing!
Needless to say, you can guess what the subject of the next training session at the firehouse involved!
Looks like a town that could use another fire station on the other side of the tracks.

Funny how most people don't realize that it usually takes longer to find a way around the train, rather than just waiting for it. And if they stopped the train to let the emergency vehicles pass, it would've ended up stopping at the crossing, making the emergency vehicles even later.

We had a barn fire near a train crossing once years ago (neighboring department's area). The problem wasn't in getting to the scene, but rather in the fact that the drafting site for the tanker trucks was ACROSS the tracks from the barn fire itself (this is a rural county), and the tracks being the main line to and from the Norfolk Southern yard in the county seat. You can imagine the delays due to the tankers having to wait for trains before they could get to and from the drafting site or the fire itself! It was interesting, to say the least.

America has far more roadways and trackage.
And they don't run those idiote long, heavy and slow trains as well.
thats unfortunate. all you can do in that situation is throttle out and get off the crossing as fast as you can.
Or use shorter and faster trains .....
That's the big difference between the US and European approach: US searches solutions for problems, we try to prevent them occuring....
Except the engineperson cannot exceed track speed. And if the fire truck arrives after the locomotive has crossed the highway, the engineperson doesn't even know it is there waiting.

they should of plan an alternate route because depending how long a train is it will take longer to stop but they also have to obey the speed limit on the rails also
Where did the big hose fire truck come from? Because the videos beginning only showed the supervisor van and alot of traffic behind it, but no big pumper truck. So again where did it come from? (Sorry if this seems like a dumb thing to ask by the way).
It left the station about a minute after the supervisor vehicle I guess. They didn't go as fast either , possibly.

Many years ago I lived near a fire station next to a railroad track. 90% of the station's calls required them to use the railroad crossing. Many times I saw them get cancelled in route while they waited for 100 car long coal trains to pass. A fire station much farther away had to handle the call. Finally they grade separated the crossing.

Nothing anybody can do. If they stop the train, it would be just as bad to try and back it up. They are stuck.
That train had a ton of carriages. The train driver should have let the cars go first for the greater good. I hope this did not make anyone late :)

It's a shame that a precious life could be lost because of stupid people who don't give emergency vehicles the right of way and in this case it was a cargo train, either way it cuts down on the response time!!!!

They're not hurting anything, and as soon as it gets cleaned up, it's just gonna get repainted. That's just the way it works. The people that REALLY belong in prison are drug addicts, rapists, murderers, abusers, NOT graffiti writers.
Real crime or not, it's not worth taking up jail space for these graffiti writers. And as soon as they get out of jail, they just keep painting.
surely the emergency department have knowledge of the time. tables of training routing. and have them halted at signals beforehand or come to that send the emergency. trucks a different way after all they need to. priorities their services to save lives
it was only 2 min hardly worth stopping a train and trains are rarely on time. i'm a vol fire man and dispatch has a lot to do already
