      I fucking adore the first one, the second was the best since the first but not quite as good, the third was fun as hell!... Not "good" I guess, but really entertaining!, the fourth I didn't like the first time around but it grew on me with repeated viewings, the 5th is a generic physiological thriller that some find entertaining but I don't personally because nothing that happens matters at all, there's no stakes to anything, the 6th is the same as the 5th but with Ashley Lawrence shoved in there, so eh.. Whatever, the 7th is more entertaining than the last 2 but still isn't much good at all, the 8th is absolutely terrible, the worst in the franchise, feels like American Pie mixed with Halloween Resurrection mixed with kids dressed as Cenobites. The 9th is also terrible.... But honestly I enjoyed watching it more than anything after the 4th, that's not a compliment though. The 11th changes loads of stuff, feels like a completely different universe with its own characters and is very mediocre.. but eh... It's way more entertaining and whole than anything since Bloodline.
      Conclusion:
      Watch the original and the sequel.
      If you love those films and are slightly open minded to enjoy stuff that makes less sense and changes stuff then watch 3 and 4.
      If you like physiological thrillers that repeatedly show random shit for no reason and have predicable outcomes then watch 5,6,7.
      If you're a retarded pre-teen then maybe watch 8.
      Only ever watch 9 if you have actually been watching this whole series torturing yourself, it may give you a nice change of pace after the last 4.
      Maybe watch 11 anyway.. 🤷🏻‍♂️.. It's not terrible but it's not that good.

      I'll assume you're right, I don't know, but I don't see how. They are almost opposites. Harry is a law-keeper who breaks the law, ignores orders, and eventually goes full-on vigilante, putting his personal belief in justice over the official law. Dredd is a law-keeper who is obsessed with his duty and for whom everything else is subservient, even though the government he is working for is not very nice. I'm not an expert in either, but it just seems very different to me.

    I'm really surprised that Roger Ebert hated Hellraiser, but loved Evil Dead 2, considering that the reason he hated Hellraiser was for its gore. I love Evil Dead 2 as much as the next horror movie buff, but it has plenty of its own gore, so Ebert was sensitive to that, why wasn't he put off that film too?

    • @thomasjenkins7506
      @thomasjenkins7506 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i can kinda see it. evil dead 2 has gore, but it goes so over the top with it, it's not really disgusting. then you have the light hearted tone of the film and it just works.
      hellraiser goes over the top in a few places, but not enough to make the gore "funny." with it's dour tone, it's just hard to see the gore as anything but gore.

      Hellraiser makes me squeamish. It's too good at it's job, and it's presented to be exactly what it is. Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness are over-the-top gory comedies. I'm not saying Ebert was fair to judge Hellraiser for his own discomfort, but it's the same thing he did to I Spit on Your Grave compared to Last House on the Left. I think maybe he relied too much on his gut feeling, ignoring the fact that there's more than one reason why you might feel sick from a piece of media.

    The thing about Hellraiser to me is that... well, i just never once found it scary, even as a kid. To me, it was just more gross and revolting than it ever was scary.

      I think it's meant to be more conceptually scary. The idea of being trapped in hell and constantly submitted to torture for eternity.

      yeah, i never found them scary. freddy and jason were scary because they didn't care who they killed. with pinhead, you kinda have to summon yourself, first.

      I watched this recently and at worst it made my skin crawl a bit. Still managed to be entertaining, which is more than I can say for some films.

      I think that's the point. Horror isn't always scary. Look at Lovecraft.

    • @swolf712
      @swolf712 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BWMagus The thing is, Lovecraft managed to be scary. His tales were of the Dread Unknown, horrifying images and creatures, but... they were still scary, evoked fear in the reader. Hellraiser doesn't do that for me. Just makes me lose my appetite.

    The first two movies were the only really good ones, but I think Hellraiser 5 is underrated. From 6 onward, they just became gorn. I will agree that 9 was terrible, but at least it TRIED to recapture the feel of the original, which is more than most of the others did. This film also features something that nobody really does anymore: stop-motion sequences in a live-action film. I really wish that practice would make a comeback. So, when you finish this film series, which one will you pick up next, Puppet-Master?

    I remember when Baker was a big thing in like the late eighties early nineties, I met a guy a few years later that had a good deal of the Hellraiser movies and only novel I ever saw him read was a Clive Baker's, He still comes out with a novel here and there but he is not as big as he once was while the man who praised him years ago, Stephen King, is still coming out with a least a book a year and is still a big deal. And as for his son Joe Hill he writes horror that has a a sort of mix feel of his father's classic horror and the sort of gross body horror blood and guts slasher of Baker.

      @@LicoriceLain No, I just was taken note of how Barker isn't in fashion now-a-days. Also I'm still annoyed that he never finish his damn Art trilogy far as I know.

      I could be wrong, but I feel like horror in all forms of media is in a slump. Not that no one is making anything, but they don't have impact, it's not a cultural phenomenon. I wonder if it has something to do with an anemic economy and uncertain future; people have enough shit to fear in their real life.

    • @stephennootens916
      @stephennootens916 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BWMagus It could be all of the above. How can a monster scare you when you can see worse on any one of the half a dozen twenty-four hour news channels. They still make horror movies but many of them are just cheep and easy money grabs. As for books I'm not sure, most of the novels go straight to paperback and King has spent the last couple of years jumping from genre to genre.

    The beautifully subtle, nuanced way in which you shade the lead actress, expressing the same opinion felt by I suspect nearly everyone who’s ever watched this film- Wife lady is just not believable as a woman with the sort of devastating beauty, sex appeal, and magnetic feminine charm required to have this many men ready to risk it all for a taste.

    I love at 19:00 when he says about the Engeineer: "Get back to Arakis!" lol. Now I'm going to imagine that the Gom Jibbar box from DUNE is the same as the Lament Configuration from Hellraiser! "What's in the box?" "Pain!" hahaha
    That would also make Frank Mu'adDib and Julia Reverend Mother Mohiam?
