That post level is killer. Two directions at once. Those Viewrail instructions are the most complete I have ever seen. I should have read them all the way through FIRST. And their customer service is very responsive. I sent my drawing of the installation; their engineers checked it out. Everything and I mean everything is included in the kit. Matt, I have one of those crimpers now too. You need an extra one?
Love watching along as you build your house, the railing looks amazing and must be solid. I recently bought a home that seems to be built by someone like you lol there’s so many details in this place I don’t even know where to begin. The floor doesn’t creek anywhere, lights in the attic (which isn’t common here) the house was built in 2000 but looks like no one has ever lived here.. If your ever in Ottawa Canada and want to come check it out let me know, I’m sure you will be blown away and it would be cool to see the features you notice that I don’t.
Looks awesome. Best of luck in your new home. You did a really nice job with all of your remodeling. Quality throughout. Thanks for sharing even the mishaps that happen along the way (screw going through water for the fridge/or other appliances. Go Texas !!!
I made a stainless steel cable hand rail for my home about 12 years ago. I used wood handrail and balusters, 8 post and about 30ft in total length . I created my own tension system for each cable run also. My cost...$250 just for the cable and the connectors. The entire staircase only cost me $2500. I love the look.
@@Ptro1 we are actually using them in a complete remodel we are just starting as it already uses a heat pump, and we are putting 2 additions in with cathedral (beam and rafter) that tie into a cut and stack roof where there is existing ducting, so going ductless on the interior finished gable is the best option for conditioning the cathedral portions as neither will have crawl space under them
@@Natedoc808 yeah they have there uses and spots that make sense. I have one in a cabin and also on a enclosed porch. Works great! They are just ugly in my opinion. But the ease of maintenance is always nice

I’ve always loved that balusters have to be >4 OC but you can build a ladder for kids to climb 😂 I live in the states but I know they are illegal in Canada and lots of other places, it maybe illegal in some states.

How tricky was it to install those long rods without scratching off the powder coat? Are they fairly flexible? Are there plastic bushings on the holes in the posts to protect the rods as I presume they are bent to thread through?
Not too tricky. There is a foam block you can see in the video being installed in the post this keeps the rods from rattling when going up or down the steps. There are no bushings in the holes.
Hey Matt! Love your videos and I use lots of the products you recommend. I found Viewrail through your channel and now I’m hoping you can help me with a tough situation. I purchased stairs from Viewrail, paid in full at time of order, demoed my existing stairs down to a temporary solution and years later they are trying to cancel on me. First they lied and said it was my communication, even tho they had ghosted me several times, changed reps quite a few times and lost my measurements and never sent engineering to approve. They are now trying to make me pay 21k more or just have my original payment back (with no compensation for my destroyed staircase repair) I’m just trying to get them to honor their contract, not a big ask.
Can we get to the backyard fencing video already lol. I live in a 1 story 1200sqft home and this does not apply. Merry Christmas Matt from Fayetteville NC.
I could be wrong and I haven't followed the series closely. To my knowledge Matt wanted the house very energy efficient and well insulated . Fireplaces are great for esthetics however not a very efficient method for heating a room/house.
Fireplaces are antiquated headaches. You spend far more money and time building and maintaining the fireplace than you would properly insulating your house. If you're that stoked about another roof penetration, install a cast iron stove. At least the next owner can remove it and reclaim that space.
The finished product looks really great, but I've watched too many horror movies with a big long straight stairway like this, so I would have to install a turnstyle or a mansaver safety bar at every post. 😁
Another great video Matt. I learned a lot watching your videos over the last couple of years and applying that knowledge at every step of my custom build in Austin that I am about to finish. I got inspired by your other video and ordered a floating stair kit but got a sticker shock now when I heard the install cost from viewrail installers. It is too late now but can you recommend a trade that can help please?
Code compliant or not, there are some borderline safe installations out there. Code compliant is the minimum permitted standard, not the same as best practices.
It looks like you didn't put any stain on the hand rial or treads. I would stain the hand rail & treads with a couple coats of light finish then seal with a couple coats of polyethylene.
I’m not a fan of this style either. Horizontal rods can be bent fairly easily and can’t be repaired. Cables are better in that regard, but are very industrial by comparison, and can require retensioning over time. The thoroughness of the kit is impressive. Just my two cents.
BEWARE, I tried to hire ViewRail and their customer service was a nightmare. Also BEWARE that "Stair Supplies" is the same company... They both treated me very unprofessionally.
Handrail ends are required by code to return toward a wall, floor, or a post. I don’t see that here. It is a design challenge and I was looking to see how you were going to detail the returns.
that AC unit on the wall sticking out like eye sore. Why not just go with built in ceiling units? They are so outdated in asia now. Only low cost houses use those units.
I must’ve missed “the entire process”????? I came for the “Here’s the install at my house”???? We see this A LOT, YTers putting out vids for the revenue. Tired of people taking advantage of our loyalty. js
that thing just looks treacherous to me. never-ending 17 stair straight away. really needs a landing. kids coming down those wood treads in a hurry wearing socks...some of the treads get a little moisture on them 😬 matt really should have just built the house he wants rather than trying to squish everything that doesn't fit correctly onto the old slab.

The rods are actually tubes. So they do have a little give. But not much. Powder coating should be fine as long as the holes are burr free.

They should have some way of returning that crimping tool. It's just going to most likely end up unused for the rest of it's life.
Agree, along with the grinder, the level and maybe even the instruction book.
How is the rail legal with it looking like a 4 inch round can fit thru at the riser?
Thanks, I was wondering the same thing. Looks to me that it doesn't meet code requirements.
I don’t think it’s even close

6 inch diameter is the max under the railing at the riser. 4 inch all other parts.

Rattle prevention basically. Something extra to prevent the horizontals from rattling against the verticals.
Hey Matt....why Poplar risers with your White Oak treads?
Nevermind. I just saw that you painted the risers. Looks nice!
How did you finish the handrail?
You mentioned no fireplace. Does it compromise the tight house envelope ?
