FYI there is also another one from U of Ark called "Black Magic" that was sold to Gurney's (same deal as Black Gem for Starks) - it's a thorny primocane fruiting variety. Since it's from U of Ark, thorny, and primocane-fruiting, I'll bet it's similar to PA45. Black Magic is one of the few varieties I don't have
Oh interesting that’s good to know. Yeah I love my ark45 berries. I think they might be the best tasting overall but the thorns are insane. Perfect for a living defensive perimeter fence though.
as far as I know, only StarkBros sells them because they are exclusive - they're called "Stark Black Gem". I also read on GrowingFruit forum in one of the rubus threads that Black Gem came from the U of Ark's breeding program just like your other Blackberries did, and StarkBros bought the naming/exclusivity rights to them. I didn't really like the taste of my first crop of them, but I'm learning that first-year berries may not taste as good as they might in subsequent years, so I'm leaving them in for now and will judge again next year. I still have no flowerbuds forming on them yet for any primocane berries :(
Oh nice! That actually makes sense. They are very similar in stem, leaf, and fruit shape to prime ark traveler. Hang in there. I’m excited for next year as well. My 2 year vines make much sweeter berries. I’m guessing it just keeps getting better
