"Helping your mother fix a computer over the phone is the worst torture."
I work in IT where most of my calls are helping 60+ people use a website and reset a password.
    I take 50-60 calls a day.
    It. Is. TORTURE.

I once took an entire hour trying to get my mom to log into her gmail. The computer even already had her details remembered. All she had to do was click the damn log in button BUT IT WAS APPARENTLY ROCKET SCIENCE TO HER.
When my frustration started showing in my tone of voice, she hit me with a classic Asian mom guilt trip comment. "you know, I patiently taught you how to use spoons when you were a toddler yet you cant be patient with me now"

I feel your pain. I spent like 4 hours helping my mother with her email log in because she needed to log in, in order for the representative at the phone store to access her account. She never uses her email so she would never really remember her password (her friend helped her set up an email a long time ago) and so eventually I had to do all the dirty work to get access to her email.

@@TimidAction not really, we grew up with technology so we can understand it, technology won't just jump generations and software to the point that we don't understand it, it develops from what we already have so we'll learn the new software regardless, our parents and older generations don't understand it because these concepts are actual new concepts that came up to the world in less than a decade, so no, we won't go through what they went through, because luckily we were raised into technology

I remember my Mum bought a new car and wanted to know what all her buttons etc were for. So I sat her down and patiently demonstrated each switch/button whilst explaining its function, after each individual button I’d ask her if she understood which she confirmed she did. It took almost 30 minutes of slow and simple worded explanations which i ran through at least twice before on to the next. Once I finally completed the entire interior, I took a deep breath and asked her if she remembered everything. She replied promptly, “not a thing.” That was the last time, everytime she gets new tech and looks at me I immediately bolt...

The best comedic stories do have an element of elevated or exaggerated truth to them.
But the best way to relate them to an audience is to channel the emotions a person would experience.
Everyone can understand frustration, and storytelling is an over the top form of conveying a situation to elicit a response.
Comedy desires humor, fairy tales teach morals, and parables teach a bit of both.

There was writing materials used before paper. Papyrus scrolls, clay tablets, any kind of woven cloth, chalk on slate and many more. In fact paper was far too valuable and delicate to be used for writing when it was first made, used mostly for decoration, walls and doors, sculpture. We also still use coins despite hundreds of years of paper money. In later years the ubiquitous ease of buying and manipulating paper has made it unreliable as forms of money and identification in the modern era.

I was trying to help someone transfer files to her new laptop. I sent her the instructions and did a remote session to help copy the files to her new laptop. A few days later I get a shipment from Fed Ex. She shipped both laptops to me so that I could transfer her files to the new laptop. I explained to her that I already did that for her. She said well great ship the new one back to me.

I am a boomer and a pirate and I love Trolls. DeToro's "Trollhunters" on Netflix is AMAZING, "The Trollhunter" (subtitled) is my favorite Christmas movie. Some of us boomers don't belong in our group. I also use "OK boomer" because it is great and confuses the crap out of stupid old people. "It isn't getting any smarter out there." _Frank Zappa SaltRiverPirate IS my name, come get me.

To be fair, with the latest generation unless it involves an app and emojis they also can't figure out tech problems.
I just saw a young couple try to buy groceries using the self-checkout line (apparently for the first time) and the guy was waving his credit card in front of the item scanner... Then his girlfriend/wife stepped in trying to show him he was doing it wrong... and was still waving the credit card in front of the item scanner. When the clerk came in to help them they got all offended.
And yes, it was the credit card, not a shopping savings card. They were talking about it and the clerk inserted it into the chip reader for them.

@Robert Taylor well that can be a learning experience to just insert the card and type ur pin after 1-2 tries. (excluding during a viral pandemic)

Hilarious. Very reminiscent of about half of my phone conversations with my parents. You would think that retired teachers would be more... teachable. Not on your life. And the number of times I've had to tell my mother how to cut and paste is mind boggling. Oh, and my brother who works in IT? No help whatsoever.

It's universal experiences like the torture of long-distance helping a tech illiterate person with tech that remind us that while we may all look, sound, and even think different, we're all still people. 😆

I get the point, but the real way to delete a comment is to click on the three vertical dots on the right side, a menu will appear with 2 options, edit (with a little pencil) or delete (with a little garbage can) you have to highlight the delete and click it, then a notice will appear asking if you really want to delete your comment and you have to click delete a second time for it to really delete the comment.
