The reason must be that if employees do this regularly then criminals eill start assaulting employees more, it does make sense/ the solution to getting shoplifting under control like it used to be is to punish shoplifting with jail time like they used to. Does singapore have shoplifting? No. I wonder why.

I'm a 70yr old disabled man, worked over 20 years for Home Depot store 3807(Toledo Ohio) and got fired for going outside and speaking with one of my regular customers who "forgot" to pay for an item. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong because I asked to speak with him nor did I try to stop him or anything overt. The store manager was looking for an excuse to fire me so he could get someone younger and lower pay which someone informed me he said he got rid of me because I was over paid and being disabled couldn't do what a younger person could. Home Depot has no interest in living the Orange Life it's just a load of BS your just a number when you make too much money watch out like a department head warned me in advance you have a target on your back. Over a year and a half since they threw me out like so much garbage and I still hope everyone reading this goes to some other store.

Back in 2017 Home Depot as well as other large corporations got a fat tax cut. Home Depot turned around and handed out $1k bonuses to 20+ year employees. 20 freaking years and all they handed out was 1k? As a matter of fact Home Depot hasn't done that since 2017 as far as i know. F'ing disgraceful company.

The biggest mistake I ever made was working at Hell Depot for one whole miserable year. I only stayed because they lied to me by saying they would promote me to full-time status when in reality, they were just keeping me around to belittle and take advantage of me. The last straw for me was when management wrote me up for failing to deter a potential credit card fraudster even though the head cashier explicitly gave me instructions to do what I did. Management will not only punish you for deterring shoplifters but for failing to deter them as well. And on top of that, if they don’t like you, they will use the most petty excuses just so they can fire you. All while keeping the worst offenders employed no matter what they do. I resigned in rage after that and Hell Depot will never get another penny from me again. At least the evil supervisor I had the displeasure of working under has since died and will never mistreat anyone ever again.

These stupid companies don't want to stop shoplifting. They are so scared of litigation! I applied for a Loss Prevention position for Home Depot after being in Public Safety for 27.5 years. During the interview, the Security Manager told me you can't stop anyone, pursue them or anything physical. Stupid Companies they call it "SHRINK" they are more worried about an employee stealing ( which I understand) than a shop lifter walking away with $2K worth of merchandise.
    What ever happened to Principle!

I was almost fired from Home Depot for harassing a shoplifter. After manager told me to leave suspect alone I reported issue to loss prevention personnel. By this time shoplifter was on his way to steal more stuff and the manager was nowhere to be found! Turned out shoplifter had active trespass warning and left store with the manager clueless. Home Depot is the place to go when you want to steal. Management doesn’t care and because of this most employees don’t care either!

HD policy says they are not allowed to intercept a thief.. it does not say they are not allowed to assist law enforcement whom might be in immediate danger! This was a trained law enforcement officer assisting law enforcement!! Now HD will replace him with that 17 yr old with No experience. And this guy did not make that much more$$ than an 18yr old. That also happened in milford ohio . A man that worked the service desk, also an amputee, caught a man shop lifting and assisted the local law enforcement in the apprehension was also fired. Seems like there would be some said about the heroism instead you loose your job. Shame on you big corporate. Unrelated I was also hired on at the same location on a conditional hire stipulation, not fully understanding the loop holes, they used the fact that the background check would take a longer period of time, this was during covid, to come back. They hired me on as a full time employee with a 90 period til my full benefits would kick in. On the 88th day I was asked to turn in my home depot appron and did not make the cut. I was straight forward about the any information pertaining to my self and my history to the HR department then giving them 110% of my abilities as an associate to no avail. Seems like there would be something in place/ employee rights as a standard so that any company can't just use an individual to fill a spot and then tell you to leave. Again shame on you homedepot.

This happened to one of my wife's former coworkers at Marshall's. My wife doesn't work there anymore, and we do not shop there anymore. We'll add Home Depot to the list.
Sanctuary states like Colorado and Minnesota are ALWAYS in favor of the criminals.
Try to stop a criminal and YOU will end up[ paying for it.

Store policy is clear & in place for many reasons! #1 being, the associates well being is far more important than any merchandise! Just like your parents teach you “material things can be replaced, you cannot”.
Home Depot policy says that the ONLY person who can even approach a questionable individual is ASSET PROTECTION, period! Associates are continually told, as well as signage in certain areas of the store, that if there is any suspicious person in the building, to call AP or the acting store manager.

No thanks. They don't pay employees enough to put their safety or their lives on the line to stop shoplifters, and the ones that do try to stop them do it from their own instincts. As mad as y'all get seeing shoplifters stealing in a store, I want to see y'all get just as mad about the government price gouging and stealing from all of us.

Corporate protecting themselves just in case the criminal files a lawsuit about being mishandled by police. But this was done on instinct and hopefully in good nature by former employee. They could have reprimanded him. Also by the interview, the guy wasn’t shoplifting but had warrant out for his arrest for drug charges the police arrested him at HD.

I commend him for wanting to help but he's got no legal case here. Time and time again they tell you do NOT attempt to apprehend a shoplifter, mainly in particular for your own safety. No guarantee the suspect may have a deadly weapon. I may not fully agree with the policy but that's how it is and you can't just follow what portions you want to follow. I wish him luck however finding employment.

Has a former front end manager at the Home Depot. I had to remind my employees not to chase after the shoplifters. It's for their own safety. And the company doesn't want to be liable. It sucks but that's the way it is. They tell you from the beginning.

    • @cherrydriver1986

@kimberlyann1960 it's such a shame that because of a case yrs ago where a woman a sued because a guy broke into her home and cut himself they found the homeowner liable. So now companies don't want to get sued for workers comp or have the suspect sue for injury.

You can't make a blanket policy there has to be judgement. Loss prevention is failing, law enforcement is failing, government is failing. In the end, we have to rise up and act if no one else will...
