SOUTH AFRICAN LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY - GOLDENGATE HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK

  • I'm in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. South Africa looking for light, landscapes and cosmos flowers. It's a long drive for just one evening and one morning's landscape photography but it is always worth getting out into the hills and under the sky - even if there is no shot to speak of at the end of it.

    My name is Will Goodlet. I am a wildlife, landscape and astro photographer working in the African Safari business. I spend my time exploring the dusty roads of Africa with my Land Rover, Basil.
    I've been taking photographs for 40 years, first in Hong Kong, where I grew up and later to follow my dreams of a life photographing Africa.

      Glad you liked it. This one always makes me sad and pissed off - I bought that car as a 'get well present' to myself and a few months late it was stolen.

    Your earlier part of your videos are like the main course of a lovely meal and then the great pics at the end is like dessert. My love for Clarens aside in all seasons, the Eastern Free State in Autumn colours is one of my favourite places to travel in SA.

      @@WillGoodlet my pleasure. I'm travelling to SA for the first time this coming September-October and am excited to do some landscape and wildlife photography if my own. Thanks for the inspiration.

      That's great news, I'm really glad, SA is a fantastic place to visit! Goldengate is very beautiful and accessible if you do visit, try and book the mountaintop lodges in the national park it's a spectacular view to wake up to:) Drop me a line if you need any questions answered and please let me know how your visit goes!

      Thanks a lot Martin. Although. I have to admit I've never really felt that I have got the best shots out of Golden Gate NP - I think the visits are always too short and I don't dial in. Wish I had started the channel long ago and could show some other places - I guess I will have to go back :)

    The Echo Ravine reminds me of Ben Horne shooting 8x10 in Zion. Another great video Will.

    Thanks for the videos! They give us great ideas for planning our stay in SA. We are considering a long distance road trip and are trying to understand how safe travel is across the country. There are various opinions and scary stories on line and wondered about your experiences.

    • @WillGoodlet

      You can't rule out risk in Africa. But as countries go, South Africa & Namibia are the easiest and probably some of the safest to visit.
      There are some places one doesn't go and some behaviours one tries to avoid (e.g. don't break down or stop on the highway next to Alexandra township at night). While breaking down on some obscure track in the Karoo would most likely find you helped out by a local or farmer.
      Be careful or avoid driving at night - watch out for livestock and wild animals and the odd pothole (but SA has better fencing than the rest of Africa)
      You can have a great time driving across country. The national highways are good, the towns set-up for tourism and the national parks are excellent.
      The gravel tracks are also fun and if you stay in guest farms, you can really see some great country.
      If you want to run by some plans, I'm happy to chat on email - will@willgoodlet.com
      It's a great country to visit.

      @@WillGoodlet again, thank you for your time and thoughts. Since covid permently closed our business, we got to do multiple 7,000 km road trips around the American West including many miles on back roads and gravel tracks ( a few bad videos on our channel) .... not sure we would want to go-off the beaten track in a country/culture we are unfamilair with.. it just increases the risk. A trip to SA is a bit off as we still have responsibilities here (labrador) and uncertainty with new covid varients. Have you been to Madagascar??? Thanks again, Jonathan and Tammie

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jonathan_and_Tammie Hi no I haven’t been to Madagascar sadly. Better to go sooner as I think there is a lot of poorly managed development going on. Although I believe driving there is more dangerous. There was a famous birder Phoebe Snetsinger killed on the roads there in 1999 (which brought home the dangers to many) but I guess accidents happen.
      I have some friends running an eco lodge there tho - if you need info. But I’m sure there’s lots of info online too.

    • @Jonathan_and_Tammie
      @Jonathan_and_Tammie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WillGoodlet the endemic wildlife is unbelievable there. We definatly would choose a guide service for that country to avoid bad situations. The name of your friends eco-lodge would be appreciated. It is difficult to properly develop natural resources.... Yellowstone NP is an example of learning how to do it better over time.
      If you dont mind, let me send you an email. Jonathan and Tammie.
