      @@RRTNZ You said it man. I'm 47 n was 19 when this came out. From 89 to 99 or so we Gen Xers left our own stamp on great rock n roll history. The 90s were GREAT! Then rock died. Most kids jumped over to Hip Hop. I know there's bands out there...I'm just too old to be discovering Indy bands like I could bk then. I'm talking radio friendly unit shifters, but great ones IMO

  • @dumahim
    @dumahim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    The guitar tone is mostly because they over-dubbed many layers of the same riff to give it such a huge sound. It's been said Soma, from the same album, had 40 layers for the guitar and the producer said as many as 100 guitar parts were compressed in to a single song.

    • @SicSemperTyrannis74
      @SicSemperTyrannis74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jesus. That'd be a f'n nightmare. No wonder most fights and break ups happen in the studio...along with the "my songs aren't being played" typical shit, or "turn up my goddamn bass!"...those amount of takes! SMH lol

    • @dumahim
      @dumahim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SicSemperTyrannis74 I think this is also why you hear bands talk about upcoming albums, like their 3rd one, and they'll say "they're going for a more live sound." Avoiding all that extra studio work and time.

    • @SicSemperTyrannis74
      @SicSemperTyrannis74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dumahim I most definitely agree man. And now that you mention that, there is sort of a pattern, huh? Great observation. I'm a guitar player and I know producers can be psychos for a certain sound, but those were jaw dropping numbers you put up. Most say they love the road, but it's Hell. Might be Heaven compared to some studio work tho lol!

      BTW did anyone catch Billy on Rogan? That was cool. He seemed very down to earth and was excited about an upcoming solo tour. Amongst other things, he said...
      1) A reunion isn't possible until D'arcy is onboard. She maintains Billy n Iha left her out.
      2) He seemed VERY excited to be able to sing in his own voice, which he could never do on SP albums because of the technicals.
      3) Rogan got him to repeat the Reptilian story again. He swears a "famous person" shape-shifted into a non human form before his eyes and he wasn't high. Rumor is that it was Robert Smith of The Cure, if you believe in such things.
      Very interesting interview. Chk it out

    You are correct, Billy Corgan was all about the distortion and fuzz 😊 And Jimmy’s drumming was definitely underrated though I think nowadays people recognize him as one of the best. I still think Billy is an underrated guitar player. I appreciate that you guys are, right off the bat, noticing the things that make SP great. This song was my intro to the band as I was given the tape (lmao) by my boyfriend at the time and had never heard them before. This is the lead track, so I’ve obviously been a fan since I was 16 😂
    ETA: No 90s groove sounded perfect, that’s was part of what made grunge what it was. SP aren’t really a grunge band, even they’ll say they’re grunge-adjacent, but that DIY kind of sound of teaching yourself to play and practicing with your band in a garage was the prevailing, popular sound in the early to mid 90s. Nirvana definitely lead with that kind of sound. “Heart-Shaped Box” immediately comes to mind

    These guys were amazing. Their original line-up lasted for their first 6 albums (Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces Escariot, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Adore, and Machina the Machines of God) then they broke up. When they came back, with a new lineup, they were never the same.

    Don't agree with the song not sounding perfect, it is exactly supposed to sound like that. It was called Grunge for a reason. That wall of sound, the fat, dirty guitars...one of the best song intros ever, in my humble opinion. Siamese Dream, one of the best albums ever. Talking about wall of sound, you should listen to some Bob Mould (Copper Blue: Black Sheets of Rain) and Nomeansno. Doesn't get much better.

    The name “smashing pumpkins” doesn’t refer to the activity of actually smashing pumpkins. It refers to the British slang “Smashing,” meaning: beautiful or crushing it, like for example: “darling, you look smashing”
    “Pumpkins” being a term of endearment. Like when someone calls their daughter “pumpkin” or something like that.
    It’s also important that “The” is included. Like The Smiths or The Ramones or The Sex Pistols. THE Smashing Pumpkins.
    Siamese Dream is by far their best album

    • @ronponce8238
      @ronponce8238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve heard Billy Corgan describe it as a contradiction. The Extraordinary Unremarkable. So I always figured Pumpkins was semi-literal,. or from the phrase of something turning back into a pumpkin (Cinderella) - average, normal, mediocre, forgettable
      Edit: Do you know why they added the “The” later? I’ve never known why.

    • @garrettmarshall1288
      @garrettmarshall1288 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ronponce8238 my comment should be taken with a grain of salt as there is always so much misinformation and disinformation out there but I recall an interview, possibly in a guitar mag back in the mid 90’s where billy had made a comment regarding what my original comment was about. There’s probably multiple meanings and to your point it may have been his reflection on what the name means. Possibly later on, years later. Or maybe he said that before the guitar mag interview. Music is always open to interpretation I guess.

    • @garrettmarshall1288
      @garrettmarshall1288 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ronponce8238 also, I’m not sure if they added “the” later on or dropped it early on. I’d have to research it. Siamese Dream didn’t have “the” on the cover. But also I’ve heard them use “the” back then around the same time so I guess I’m not sure either.😁
