Hey Jason, holy smokes man what a fantastic video you've made here. You're an incredible teacher and player, and this has got to be the best video about the many practical uses of the circle of fifths out there. Please, keep doing what you do! More videos like this, oriented toward composition would be amazing. Thanks for doing what you do, man.

Couple more things I am sure Jason would’ve covered had he more time. The square (or diamond) shape creates a diminished 7th. Also, a isosceles triangle (for example, C E Ab) creates an augmented triad. Lastly, if you place a major third after each note (and put them in lower case) you have everything you need to build a ton of chords. Hard to explain in words, but I’ll try.
Start from an upper case letter and go clockwise, you get:
Three in a row: Major triad
    Fourth is the major 7
    Fifth is the 9
    Sixth is the 11
    Seven is the 13
Start from a lower case letter, and:
    Three is a minor triad
    Fourth is a minor 7
    Fifth is the 9
    Sixth is the 11
    Seven is the 13

And also it has ended so much of the confusion in my head. i was wondering are there any circle of sevenths and elevenths..now when you find major sevenths or minor sevenths in it already.. what more you need! and again it looks like a game now..mapping sort of thing.

Hi Jason, this is referring to timestamp around 5:55 to 6:03 , demonstration of going up clockwise in 5ths.
C to G was up a fifth and the demonstration on keyboard matches correctly.
    But G went down a 4th below to D, not up a 5th to the D above.
Same for A to E, and E to B, etc. were demonstrated as a 4th down.
Technically this was an inversion of a 5th.

Am I correct in counting five intervals up on each degree (note) of the relevant scale to achieve the fifths ie B to F#?…..and up four intervals on each degree (note) to achieve fourths…ie Bb to Eb? This seems to be spot on! I am a beginner and am trying to understand the logic of the Circle to the keys etc.

    • @nathanielschool
      @nathanielschool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! But 7 chromatic steps up will give you the perfect 5th. Perhaps you can memorize and practice the Circle of Fifths as both the fifths and fourths can be found one step away from the root either clockwize or counter clockwize

Hi sir - this video is an eye opener to say the least.... I ordered a customised photoframe of this circle now and keep it on top of my piano. However, one thing which I noticed - I was trying to look at this circle from a note standpoint and then arrive at a formula for a combination of notes to form regular triads from the circle itself- thats when i noticed that to form any major chord, we need the starting note, the 2nd note and the 5th note going in a clockwise direction. Is this a coincidence or somehow also related to the fact that, the ratio of frequencies of a perfect fifth and a starting note is 3:2 (2+3=5)? sorry again for the long text but cannot get it out of my head
