It's super interesting getting a musical breakdown on classic gaming tracks like this. I hope we see more in the future 😁

7:35 As for section 2, I love such chromatic basslines, It's the same in Lon Lon Ranch (Eponas Theme) in Ocarina of Time, going down one half step for each bar

Easily one of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite games, of all time. The Dark World theme is INCREDIBLY impactful. It's even crazier when you focus on the ridiculous limitations, musically, that the composers and coders had in that era of computer technology. Here we are THIRTY-TWO YEARS LATER breaking down 16-bit music on a full-sized piano keyboard.

It’s not a song. You realise this right?
That the pop charts are dominated by songs (pieces of music cratered around singing).. so that people got used to calling all the tracks songs.. which was correct. But then people started calling all pieces of music (or pieces for short) songs. Which is wrong.
Because they don’t know what else to call pieces.. because they don’t have experience or context of let’s say a classical music world, where it’s normal for everyone to call pieces pieces.
But that’s what this is. A piece. Not a song.

Ooooooh I LOVE the Dark World theme! A Link to the Past is so nostalgic for me, I always used to play it as a child (illegally on a CD-ROM for the PS2 but shhhh)

It’s so interesting to hear your thoughts on this! I’ve had a piano arrangement of this I composed a couple decades ago and some orchestral arrangements more recently. Your point about the tie-in to Midna’s theme from TP is very interesting to hear someone else point out, as it’s something I actually utilized as a segue in one of my old Zelda piano medleys to slip into Midna’s theme for a moment from Dark World and on into other themes. I’ve not heard another musician talk about this piece or link that motif to Midna and the Twilight Realm like I have, so this made me happy haha! I enjoyed your breakdown!
I love it when the composers use clever cues like this or the reversal of Zelda’s Lullaby to create the Ballad of the Goddess in SS to link worlds and storylines together.

Amazing breakdown! The technical skills and knowledge you share here are solid. I think it really comes through audibly in your clean metal covers. Keep up the great work!

I would argue that, due to the A ♮ being nearly constantly used rather than an A ♭ that the piece is in a Dorian key rather than a minor key.

    • @SimonLoveridge
      @SimonLoveridge  ปีที่แล้ว

Good observation! There’s definitely a moment where you could say it’s Dorian but I wouldn’t say the A natural is constantly used, you could argue that it’s only really when it changes to F major, as soon as the next A flat and B flat chords play it reverts back to aeolian. Actually it does flip back to Dorian when it gets to the E flat and F, but then switches back again when it goes to A flat and B flat. Kind of crazy how it keeps switching to Dorian and back!
Btw we need more music theory in the comments section, thank you 😊

There are hints of Imperial March from Star Wars in one of these dark world tracks that has always stuck out to me.

Yes! That’s the Dark World side of Death Mountain! Very John Williams, who was inspired by Gustav Holst long before him (listen to Holst “The Planets” and you’ll hear Star Wars but from 1916!) On and on inspirations go! ❤

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm loving these videos ❤ I have trouble writing outside of one key/scale when playing bass and I've been trying to experiment more lately. Things like this help, showing off those chromatics in the second half of this beautiful theme ^_^

Minha canção favorita do meu jogo favorito.

Great playing and analysis. My only gripe is that I wish you wouldn’t call this piece of music a song. It’s not a song because there is no singing in it.
