*ITS HARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE* to understand just how absolutely convinced we all were that we would unalive in a nuclear explosion - no one expected to die of old age. In 1983 [?] there was a massive explosion outside my house, I was 13, inside alone. I just stood there and waited to unalive, I knew it was a nuclear bomb. After about 5 minutes I was confused I was still alive so I went outside and a chemical storage facility about 1000m away had exploded - leading to the world's biggest ever spill of Paraquat weedkiller, so still not good.
I don't know what to say. Around the same time I looked out my bedroom window sometimes and thought "What if there was a flash ?". I even tried to envision what the flash (of the air-burst of a MIRV warhead) would look like. The city I lived in was the target for a full multi warhead delivery system. Naval base, air force base, power station and so on. The one over the central business district would have taken out the telecommunication infrastructure of a third of the country. But that's nothing in comparison to having an actual chemical explosion nearby.
@@FionaOfMountLawley TBH I was remarkably calm - not brave cos I was not scared. I was just sad. I just thought "OH so this is it then" The irony is I now live in Bulgaria quite near the nuclear air base that WOULD have dropped the nuke if it had been real. And the people here had no intention of nuking us, they were told by their government that WE woudl nuke them - BUT, the big difference is all the apartment blocs have nuclear shelters in the basements...!!! In the UK only the rich got shelters, here the whole population had them,...!!! That 3vil communism.

Apparently a lot of the extras in the council were the actual people charged with dealing with such a situation if it ever happened.
