In a pinch, a decent folder can be pressed into service as a weapon. But most knives designed specifically for use as a weapon aren’t great cutting tools. I just never felt comfortable wearing a fixed blade all the time. The social and legal issues aside, having a sheath on my belt or inside my waistband just feels annoying. For whatever reason, I get snagged on all sorts of random stuff. I think part of it is that I’m kinda “oversized” in many settings. The obvious question then is “what about a small fixed blade with a pocket sheath?” Most of the small “edc fixies” designs are just too small to be comfortable in my XXL sized hands. It’s a real shame, because there are a LOT of really beautiful and capable designs in the 2-4” blade range. For the same amount of pocket real estate, I can get a decent folder that’ll offer a bit more handle. My current rotation is a Manix 2 LW, Sage 5, and UKPK all in SPY27 (it’s a dream to sharpen and is supremely well balanced). I also have a Deka with XL scales from Original Goat which make for a nice 4 finger grip that’s been getting a lot of pocket time. Besides those, I have about 25 folders that are all users as I don’t believe in having safe queens anymore. I have pared down my collection a LOT over the years and I’m actually way ahead of the game as far as money goes. I bought a lot of knives from 2002-2015 that either went way up in value or I got such good deals on them that I made money selling them for market value. I do have a modest collection of quality fixed blades as well, but most of the time I just end up grabbing my Garberg when it comes time to do “fixed blade jobs.” And as far as when I’m camping, part of my kit is either a Silky Saw or a decent little camp hatchet. For my needs and because of the limitations due to my size, my spydies get the job done and are a joy to carry & use. I agree. Judo since a boy, some kali and various other FMA training, bouncer, and security work...rarely had to go hands on and generally was smart enough to avoid violence. 6'3" 250lb. My endura never left my pocket nor has my boker hel in an encounter. Quick question does you hel pocket clip slide to the side and rotate flatter? I'm constantly pushing it back despite the screw being tight with blue locktite...not a big issue. I enjoy the "bowie" backcut at the hand in training as well as snap cuts.. oddly enough not learned in FMA. fixie is my go to over folder everytime.
A fellow security brother! I dated a gal who was a Judo master back when I was Johnny Hot stuff in the striking community. The first time she landed a wizard's throw on me I had a second in the air to appreciate Judo. 😆 And my Boker Hel clip hasn't shifted at all, but I only wear it a couple times a month tbh, so I'll keep an eye on that. Great discussion. In my personal opinion, Fixed Blades "Rule," if you are able to carry them concealed legally. But, if you can't, then Lock-Blade Folders "Rule!" :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
I myself have leaned more towards fixed blades.. I more often pocket carry but it also depend on what I’m doing. I have a wide collection and an array of sizes and styles. @@5MinuteKnives I hate their new designs. Too over the top. And now that they are using "super steels" their prices are even higher. Can't justify it. I have a Guardian 6, 5.5 m390, 5.5 n690, 4 m390 and 3.5 m390. The 3.5 is on my hip and it is nasty. I love it.
@@5MinuteKnivesI carry both. I always have my coldsteel vaquero xl serrated. An I carry a small fixed blade. Lately a watchman we222. I'm a student of FMA and small circle jujitsu for the last 10 years. My taste have changed drastically after learning FMA I look at a knife an my first thought is what would a jury of old woman say. I watched hundreds of knife attacks back before the internet decided we aren't old enough to judge our own viewing. Now we aren't even allowed to hear certain words. The funny or sad part is crime is off the charts. Obviously pretending it's not happening hasn't worked. Oh went off target sorry I better stop.
I'm a lefty, and the sheath on the Tops Grim Ripper allows pocket mounted carry that literally feeds into your hands. I've been a big advocate of push knives forever whenever one can do so. Kubey makes a pushy in 14c that i heavily modded the handle to be less...gas stationy and ergonomic. So far, it's been everything I've wanted in one
@5MinuteKnives Oof! Practically speaking, I like the way they make slicey reach/nope space. Carrying AIWB is the same draw stroke as my gun. It's my comfy. I do get why they get the hate...they really are shit at much anything else. You can baton with a push knife. When you're drinking And want to prove that it can be done
All my latest purchases as of late have been pocket fixed blades. I like the pocket fixies pared with a nice slip joint. That’s the direction I been on.
My first knife was given to me by my grandfather and it was a folder. I have more of a sentiment towards folders for this reason. Practically, it would likely be easier to justify a folder to law enforcement in my area. I also enjoy the improvements made to locking mechanisms over the years. As for ease of deployment, some fixed blades are harder to deploy quickly than a folder with a wave. All that being said, a good sub 4" fixed blade with a practical and well-made sheath is probably better than a folder of similar dimensions. I think in this debate, emphasis should be placed on the sheath since a substandard sheath will make you miserable even with a great knife.
@5MinuteKnives Hopefully, with more and more people using fixed blades, the public perception will change and it will become more 'acceptable' to carry. I think this is still very different from area to area and country to country.
Never understood people spending over $300 on a folding knife when it just cuts basic things, it’s just pocket jewellery that you show off to your knife buddies. A $300 fixed blade I can understand, you can chop down a tree, baton wood, pry, do all that tactical stuff if you want. Fixed blades all the way mate
@@calebs7567 I use a Victorinox Classic to cut my toddlers nails. Which $300 fixed blade should I replace it with for that task or should I just use my Fällkniven A1?
If everyone starts buying fixed blades guess what will happen to the prices? Looking at the prices of a good fixed blade they aren’t exactly cheap either. I’m a traditional knife guy. Once GEC & Northwoods became popular they’d sell out in 2 to 3 minutes and the prices skyrocketed.
The deciding factor between carrying folders (locking and non-locking) or solid fixed blades is the weapons law where I live. Ideally I would always carry a SAK, my Leatherman Rebar, my M16-14DSFG and either my Fällkniven F1 or A1. However the law here is "vaguely specific" about what you can carry, where and when. So mostly I just carry my SAK Climber/Evo14 and my Leatherman Rebar. After a recent change in the law I stopped carrying my Fällknivens to not risk them getting confiscated by over zealous law enforcement.
Fenix pd36r all the way! It basically replaced OC spray for me. I shine that in their eyes and that's the end of it. I should have a vid on it somewhere down the line. 👍
I misspoke. I meant to say I've already done a vid with it. I think it might've been in a collection lights video some time ago. Thought I should clarify.
It’s all in the grind and folders are mostly flat w secondary bevel. But I think I’m going to try the Protech godfather. I have cqc6? Kershaw skinner w wave because I love the wave too and it’s the biggest. For a strictly fighter imo the best is the FS knife 2nd edition. It’s like a tiny rapier but not many modern versions.
@ pokey pokey? So, you’ve had one and meh? Good, I’ll save the dough. Still need to send my knives to you but spent too much last year…it’s first on my list before I buy anything else…knife wise 👍…but if that purple Apocalypse sets much longer I dunno 🤪
@@Atheistbatman don’t get me wrong. The Godfather was pretty awesome actually. Sick acting and a great looking piece. It just didn’t find its way in my pocket often. Also the blade length is illegal in Colorado so that was a big part of it. I would’ve worn it when I went out otherwise… if that helps.
I have a 2nd and a 3rd edition/version/mark FS. The solid machined handle on the 2nd version is much better than the later cast version. Still, the FS has the very thin rat tail tang making it quite prone to snapping. The later Applegate dagger was a big improvement over its FS forefather. That said I have never actually bothered to get an Applegate.
@ I got that cheap walther p99 knockoff just to get a feel of the grip. Not a fan. I like that narrow wasp shape of the FS. The snapping issue maybe trade off but I don’t think a concern. It’s not a knife that requires force or strength but speed and agility. And I love the way the blade rings too.
I'm a tradesman I'm cutting boxes, trimming overflash on pvc and plastics, stripping wires, tons of uses for a blade. I work outdoors bending crouching etc. fixed blades are a little too cumbersome for my work. I carry cold steel folders. The tri-ad locks are superior because my biggest concern is the knife folding back on my fingers. The metal is good if not excellent if I want to spend a little more. I'm not trained in knife fighting, just martial arts, boxing. I'm older now 60. I always bring a gun to a knife fight. I'm not aggressive nor do I look for trouble. I will literally run from it, I'm not that fast anymore as well. If I am cornered with no option I will do what I have to do. For me what I've always been comfortable carrying all day everyday on my person is a shrouded hammer snub nose revolver chambered in .357. I carry it working and during my time off Summer Fall Winter Spring, everyday! I trane with it often it requires skill, the barrels only 2 inches. It's shorter than most fixed blades and easy to ccw. It's not designed for gun fights it's an up close and personal weapon that will stop a threat outside of knife fighting distance. It's 5 shots of 357 and it will stop someone who can walk through a standard pressure 38 in my opinion. Even if I'm using 38+p. I carry good ammunition that's not boutique less chance of a prosecutor using that against me. I prefer 158 grain semi jacketed hollow point. A very common hunting self defense load called the fbi load. It comes in magnum and plus+. It's been proven very effective and the average self defense shooting distance is usually 7-10 yards. What convinced me to carry a gun is I found a gentleman who was stabbed to death. He was stabbed in the head neck and torso. The guy who did it was fleeing the scene of a crime he had just killed his mother. He was looking to change cars he stole the victims car. It was completely random. The guy had been murdered in the elevator foyer of my storage facility. I was going to my unit to pick up supplies. I found him lying face down in a huge puddle of blood with blood on the walls and ceiling. It was unspeakable the brutality. I understood that a person who can do that to another person randomly must be in such a lunatic state there would be no "fighting them" with fists or a knife. It would most likely happen in close quarters and your situational awareness must be point on. Point of fact I always bring a gun to a knife fight. In the case of multiple attackers a semi auto would be more beneficial. There's a 99.9% chance the cops won't be there. When I called them it took them ten minutes to get there. Long enough for someone to kill you 5-10 times. Carrying a gun all day every day as a civilian is hard based on weight, concealment etc. It's cumbersome and it won't help you if you don't have it. Choose something you won't leave at home or in your car. The snub nosed revolver is my weapon of choice. I'm glad regular Americans still have choices, don't lose that privelege. I recently regained an interest in the fixed blade for camping etc. i also have some cold steel fighting knives but id be lying if I said I know how to use them so I don't carry them. My favorite fixed blade length is 4-5" I also have a small hatchet on my truck I use for clearing bramble around equipment I have to work on. That suckers sharp. I got it and a 5" fixed blade from BPS knives recently A small company in Ukraine. Just based on the budget value and utility WOW they are pretty decent. I'm going to blue the hatchet since it's really high carbon steel but damn is that thing sharp😂. Thanks for your great reviews and hard work. Thanks for your service. (I dont just say that to military, first responders are front line troops as well.)

@@sharpends4279I didn’t know you had a channel. Subscribed. If you need kydex, you more a guy. 👍
Appreciate ya!
Great discussion. In my personal opinion, Fixed Blades "Rule," if you are able to carry them concealed legally. But, if you can't, then Lock-Blade Folders "Rule!" :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
@@Kris_Stiletto 💯 Appreciate you stopping by!
I myself have leaned more towards fixed blades.. I more often pocket carry but it also depend on what I’m doing. I have a wide collection and an array of sizes and styles. As a matter of fact I just received a new knife I just recently saw on Gideons Tactical and love it..! The sheath isn’t so great though and mite like you to create one for it.
Of course! Just shoot me an email whenever you're ready and we'll discuss it.
Great video! I’m really pretty new to knives and all my most recent purchases have been fixed blades- with your sheaths added. The knife I carry to open boxes is a Benchmade Shootout- being an OTF, it’s just fun to use. I’ll put my name in on any giveaways- but I do hear what you’re saying, I was surprised the Very WorkSharp Christmas Video didn’t get more views.
Right? Autos are fun though. I think it’s Pavlovian. 😂 Anyway, appreciate ya bud! (Remember to remind me to throw you a discount for covering that last 2day shipping)
I have a few nice folders. Old zts and a Doug Ritter hogue. Edc a cold steel s35vn tanto because of the bomb proof lock. Most of my fixed blades are bradfords. I really like them
Bradfords are amazing. I really miss dinner of my zts too. Wish they made more stuff
I love it.
Fixed blades are king 🤴 no discussion in my opinion especially in a scraparoon
Did we just become best friends?
That’s an interesting take. I was actually stuck with a push knife in the arm as a bouncer years ago. 😂
@5MinuteKnives Oof! Practically speaking, I like the way they make slicey reach/nope space. Carrying AIWB is the same draw stroke as my gun. It's my comfy. I do get why they get the hate...they really are shit at much anything else.
You can baton with a push knife.
When you're drinking
And want to prove that it can be done

Fixed Blade Rule 😊 always carry a fixed blade as my primary and folders as a backup
All my latest purchases as of late have been pocket fixed blades. I like the pocket fixies pared with a nice slip joint. That’s the direction I been on.
I’ve been looking at giant choppers myself but I’ll be in the market for another pocket fixie soon.
All great points and not a debate at all. Just personal preference. My first knife was a buck folder too. 🙂
@@calebs7567 💯💯💯💯💯
My OG 4Max 62RN is amazing.
@ I gotta check that one out sometime…
@@calebs7567 I use a Victorinox Classic to cut my toddlers nails. Which $300 fixed blade should I replace it with for that task or should I just use my Fällkniven A1?
I am going through fixed blade mania and bought a Lionsteel M5.
I love my folder but different tool for different purposes.
oooh. I'm a huge fan of LS. just classy, good looking tools.
@ I’m really hoping it preforms as good as it looks as well.
Makes total sense. Better to be cautious about some of the legal nonsense that pops up in different areas…
What flashlight do you carry on patrol if I may?
Fenix pd36r all the way! It basically replaced OC spray for me. I shine that in their eyes and that's the end of it. I should have a vid on it somewhere down the line. 👍
@@5MinuteKnives thanks, I'll be watching for it.
I misspoke. I meant to say I've already done a vid with it. I think it might've been in a collection lights video some time ago. Thought I should clarify.
@@5MinuteKnives thanks, I see the PD35 vid from a year ago and a few EDC collection vids, I'll go watch those.
What knife is that that your buddy Tom sent in?
@@RadDadisRad It's a Charles May Lil' Big Woods 👍
It’s all in the grind and folders are mostly flat w secondary bevel. But I think I’m going to try the Protech godfather. I have cqc6? Kershaw skinner w wave because I love the wave too and it’s the biggest.
For a strictly fighter imo the best is the FS knife 2nd edition. It’s like a tiny rapier but not many modern versions.
Ah that’s a cool one… and I actually loved the Godfather but couldn’t figure out what to use it for. 😂
What convinced me to carry a gun is
I found a gentleman who was stabbed to death.
Appreciate you taking the time and joining the discussion sir. I like the Shield plus these days for my EDC. When I was in the trades (HVAC) I used to beat up a lot of kershaws but I could see Cold Steel folders being perfect for field use too. I find it refreshing when I can beat the crap out of a knife and not feel bad about it. Anyway, I appreciate your comment and stopping by!
