As 17 year olds a couple of friends and I started a band here in rural Germany, mainly covering Charlatans songs. "Then" was among the tracks and I played the hammond organ on it. Years later our guitarist, who had stopped making music to become a medical doctor was hanging out in a hotel bar after a congress on radiology. He got into a conversation with a lad from England and told him he thought British music was great. So the guy said: Oh yes? Which bands do you like? He replied: The Charlatans. All of a sudden all heads at the bar turned to him, saying: We are the Charlatans! He couldn’t believe it. They met each other at that bar three nights in a row and Mark Collins got him tickets for a show several months later in Düsseldorf.
Thank you so much for sharing that. That is unbelievable that is just unbelievable. It’s just … what a True Treat in someone’s life ❤❤❤❤❤😊
Brilliant story.. class band
Are you a Charlatan ❓️❓️
I am a Jesus And Mary Chain ❗️❗️
😎😎😎😎😎
After 30 plus years of listening to this I have come to the conclusion this song will always move me in a way that music does. Spine tingling, still.

Amen brother classic music 18 at the time......musci takes us back to our youth and always will.happy mondays and stone roses .great to be alive in manchester at that time❤❤❤
The sound of my youth.Brilliant, beautiful, never to be beaten.
This might even sound better in 2021 than any of the previous 31 years its been around. Superb!
I agree with you. It wasn't one of my faves by them until recently!
Saw at Leeds university in 1990 loved this song then and still do getting towards fifty ..
Like a fine wine. With age comes discernment 😉
this the original for me. first heard on the radio back in the day 📻
*2022 entered the chat*
Living through this time and growing your hair out like Tim was special. We had the t-shirts, tunes and attitude. Those who never got it, their loss. Keep on keeping on if you still play!🎉
That drumming, which sounds like it belongs in a completely different track, is magnificent.
If this whats one of your favorite jams when it was current, you were special then and you're still special now.
The sound of that Hammond organ combined with the bass make this song a masterpiece
yes it does
Their drummer is amazing too
true for most Charlatans tracks
Timeless Hammond
The combo of the hammond, bass and drums is hypnotic. 👌😎
1990s where are you now...i miss it

This album completely changed my out look on life. I discovered it in 1992 aged 17. ✌️ The Second album changed who I was as a person. Followed and been to Charlatans gigs, and now my son is a Charlatans fan, took him to gigs as well. Transcending generations with sound and meaning and poet lyrics. ❤The Charlatans ❤
Great when you pass it on to your children. The music will live on. P.S are you related 🤣
Listen stone roses !!
Intrigued as to how the second album changed you as a person?
This takes me back. It's so sweet and yet hurts at the same time. Funny how music does that sometimes
The 90's was special. 👌👌👌You had to be there to appreciate it.
I was and it was the best...never be replicated or beaten
Bass line + Drums + Hammond = so fucking brilliant and ahead in time and space
Bless you Rob Collins. You wrote all these songs that made the Charlatans what they are. Not been the same since.
Amongst the general brilliance of this track I love the drumming x
Such a slept on and overlooked band. One of my very favorites. Timeless asf.
This should be 10,000,000 views. Circa 1990 Used to listen to this in a railway station in Falmouth Cornwall with best mate, after going skywards on all that's available, Then.... And When....we couldn't get any higher, like the warriors we'd make our way back to Coney Island
Love #TheWarriers reference bro....lol 😉😄😎👍✌☮🎶🏴
@@Kalamero Got be careful now making our way back to coney Island with the covey police
Crying, not heard this for years... where did I go
It’s not you life seems so fast
Where did we all go honey? Next festival.
Good Memories for me,nineties,parties,drinks...
We flew away then flew back to reality again. Lol. Great days, glad we lived it. 🏴👍
Tim Burgess class singer

I am so fuckin pleased we lived it. 👍🏴
Man it really does....between listening to Brit Pop and just getting turned on to rave music....what a time....what a scene
A better carefree lifetime
Seen them supporting Noel at Newcastle last month, they stole the show.. still brilliant
Great song ! Takes me back R.I.P Rob Collins and Jon Brookes
Such a lovely time back then..reflecting brings a tear to the eye😪
Very sad to say Robert McGowan passed away Tuesday night. He appears fleetingly in this video. Long live Bob. One of life's most colourful characters and Staunch Indie music fan to say the least. Should also mention, huge Utd fan. RIP Bob, regards Blue!
new find for me. just when I think I've heard it all..
great track.
Don't know how this dosnt have 60 million views honestly!!! Absolute CLASSIC 💯 love from Scotland lads 👊🏻 🏴 💯
Hello
Fantastic Scotland
Land of the iconic
JESUS AND MARY CHAIN
😎⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Banging Chuuuuune ! I was in RAF from 1990 based RAF Brize Norton…….had this Chuuune in my head all the time x
Hypnotic, rhythmically beautiful and lyrically brilliant. This whole album was/is so solid all the way through every track. In the early 90s while we were being bombed with Grunge (not at all a bad thing!) and the beginning of the end for good Hip Hop/Rap (a very bad thing), this band had an extraordinary way of making me want more at the end of every song. Nothing could really compare to the Manchester sound of the early 90s. A very special time to be young and hearing this band!
Wall said, i feel the same, and man, i miss those days. I am glad the good music doesn't have expiration date. This song will forever stay masterpiece
Karla Pippo Thanks Karla, I agree. You look like you were a HOT Alt Rock chick!
Well said Karla and Mark - top music by a top band - Madchester!
Mark Steinke nicely put and bang on the money !!! The 💡 was/is shining in Manchester great bands and none better than these
Mark Steinke totally agree with you
Saw at Leeds university 1990 magical times
Whether you like it or not, this is pure rock n roll🤘🏼
I bloody love this one - and have done since at least 1991; it reminds me of an important, special and happy time in my life. This is never far from my playlist.
Rob Collins on the hammond left some pretty amazing sounds behind him.great band but i always felt they never quite got over robs passing, purely based on there early stuff which was genius.
RIP Martin Duffy. An incredible and iconic sound on all of The Charlatans albums.
Duffy was only a touring keyboardist mid to late 90s. This is the legendary Rob Collins on Hammond organ (rest his soul), he played on first 4 albums and most of Tellin' Stories before he was tragically killed. Tony Rogers has been their keyboardist since Robs' passing. Only saw them once before Rob died, 4 times with Tony. Both are excellent keyboardists without a doubt.
what a tune. never gets old
It really doesn't.............such nostalgia, .....p.s. like the good lookin records icon
First time watching this was coming back after a night out and seeing them perform it live on “the word” and loved it ever since!
Over thirty years later and 49 years old finally got to see them perform this at the O2 academy Bristol the other night, brilliant song.
Love this, loved The Charlatans since THEN til now. Such a Kool band. 😻
Brilliant track
Masterpiece.
The start is just awesome . The whole song is just WOW
Timeless, and just awesome, back in the day till now....💙The Charlatans 👍💪💪🏴💙
Forget the stone roses, these where the pioneers, of the 90s indie/mod revival I was there, I no,
Scooter Scooter I no two
The Charlatans were / are immense BUT so were the Rose's bro....👍✌☮🎶
Stone Rose's Charlatans Inspiral Carpets 3 bands I grew up loving.
So was I and I would say Depeche Mode were more an eighties band ,( EnjoyTheSilence my fave I think )
But #StoneRoses and #charlatans are the greatest British bands in my humble opinion....
But I love this track and the a side #EverythingCounts
👍✌☮
@@Kalamero Violater was a damned good intro into the 90's
Class track ...this whole album and the whole charlatans catalogue up to "telling stories" was amazing and brilliant after that I lost the love for them but I still regard them as one of the foremost Manchester scene leaders up there with the Roses and mondays etc
One of the best songs ever made. Glad I got to experience this in Birmingham last year
An unrelenting tour-de-force of a song. So powerful.
My favourite Charlatans song without a doubt. Seen them live 3 times. Each gig a great experience, even though they didn't play this! ;-)
2023 and still sounding phenomenal 👌🏼
These lads..The Insiral Carpets,Happy Mondays..all great bands.who have we got now?
This takes me back to the Autumn of 1990; cold and wet days, listening to this fab song from the album 'Some Friendly', brilliant stuff. The video has that low-budget, student film feel that was so prevalent in this period on programmes like MTV's 120 minutes. What a great legacy as a band. Their whole 90s period was fantastic and beyond.
I think this video looks pretty well made! It must have been filmed from a helicopter when they’re on the cliff. It’s like a Simple Minds video! 😄
This song gives me goosebumps....so good...
Especially when the hammond organ starts playing.
Yeah me too
totally agree
@@dianeclaytondunn6304 I love the shot where he’s shaking those red maracas and the helicopters coming towards him. That one shot there, for some reason, just blows me away
@@makemosaics yes i agree
I love this band!! Their driving Bass Lines are a work of Art!!
My fave charlatans song
Such a brilliant tune..
Most under rated song of the era!
Such a underrated band,"I want to bomb your Submarines "what a opening line to a truly great song, from a truly great band ❤
Memories.
First single I bought after years of only hip hop. Game changer. What a simply beautiful tune
Ages like a fine wine. One of the greatest
Brilliant then brilliant now timeless song by a class band RIP rob and john ❤
Superb hammond line
Great tune.
Bought this album when the Manchester sound was out in full force!
The Beggars Banquet released so many amazing bands.
And Oasis weren't even a 'thing'.
Yeah, great label.
Shivers, still wow
awesome such a great band ...and still going strong ..still sounds fresh now 34 *(eek) years later as it did to my 17 year old ears in 1990...its a criminal travesty that bands like The Charlatans, RIDE and some others never got the mainstream acclaim that they so well deserved ....(annoys me that some people think British Indie music starts and ends with Oasis, Blur and Pulp !! ..so much other incredible music out there that never gets the wider recognition it should of done...man that Hammond at the last closing 1 minute of this track is sublime ..RIP Rob
Watched them live in Salford last year, amazing
Beautiful. Have this on 7" vinyl...RIP Mr. Collins x
It all happend with THEN!!!!!! Absolute one of my faves indie will return!!!
Just saw these at Barrowlands last night. Best tune of the night❤
I visited this location for the video yesterday it’s at Hawkstone park Shropshire beautiful place I highly recommend a visit as you will not be disappointed.
Love this track. The bassline is so good. 👌
this is an amazing song, the Charlatans' best - love the emotion in it...
Top notch tune
love the charlatans lover this song
Such an underrated band. Great to hear this little gem !
Not underrated!
Am I the only one to believe that this is the best song from the band?
My favourite Charlatans song too.
Great song but so many more choices i can't nail a particular one
Love
Fantastic Band!!!…
When you hear the single 45 rpm... and then the VIDEO.. what a concept!!!
Amazing Bass guitar!
Fuckin top top tune. The beat, the lyrics, the voice, the instrumental play, the bands image captures this generation perfectly. I miss the late 80s early 90s.
😊😊
This is sublime
Yeah mate its a classic.
Drums and bass hold it down, solid...perfect...and that f-in keyboard line at about 2:50....omg....just the best, ever...
Noel Johnson ....I saw them twice in the early nineties and that’s what blew me away too ... the powerful drums and bass ...the hall seemed to shake.
That's not just any keyboard, but "music's most glorious voice" - the mighty Hammond, in the hands of a master.
Bit of trivia for you: Rob Collins was ill the day they were shooting this music video, so that isn't him behind the keyboards in the cave scenes. Notice the way his stand-in turns away from the camera to disguise the fact it isn't Collins
lovely song.
sheer class
Without a doubt, their finest moment, nothing that came after from them was better, in any way...25+ years on and it still doesn't sound in any way dated...
Crazy good.
Don’t quote me on this but this is my favorite Charlatans song.
Masterpiece
Beautiful.... just beautiful x
The 90's ...... what a time to be alive and young, cannot believe the start of that decade was 30yrs ago, remember it like it was yesterday.
Hacienda, Thursdays,Temperance night.❤
My favorite album of all time is "Some Friendly" by this band , the Charlatans U.K. I could not wait for this LP to come out back in early October 1990 since I bought the CD single import for "The Only One I Know" 2 months prior and hearing their 2nd single "Then" on the radio for the past month. It had such an impact on me like no other album. What a trip...I would play the entire CD religiously for the next year. Definitely a rebirth of 60's-type psychedelia for me and a whole lot of others at that time... this was THE BAND for me.
Thank you TW, I actually still have all those CD's from back then except Northside. I do have The Darkside "All that Noise" w/the songs "Waiting for the angels" & "Guitar voodoo", rest of the album is kind of lame. I think that's awesome that quite a few of your gen can appreciate 90's alternative bands, speaking a few are making comebacks this past year(Slow Dive, Lush, Stone Roses, Verruca Salt, Kula Shaker) I still listen to collage radio (88.9 WMCX) even today because there is no better format of music that always keeps me young at heart. Whether it's early artist like Bowie,Velvet Underground, Ramones to current bands like Alt J, Wolf Alice, Phantagraham, at least it's not typical top 40 format. Cool pic of yer band by the way...Rock On.
They sort of lost this special niche they'd carved for themselves quite quickly...but this shows how unique it was...nigh on 30 years old and still stops you dead in your tracks...what a classic...
Love it !! I saw them 12 times and they defo shaped my whole life... 👍✌☮🎶
Great days
2021 and sounding better than ever...
What an amazing time in music
This track gives me wood
Pics or GTFO.
Same
@ easy tiger tiger
This always a highlight live. Amazing
Still fucking great
loving the bass guitars in this song.......
Legends
So smooth. Slippery darkly lit groove. Second fave track off Some Friendly. Was a Charlies fan from the first second I heard Indian Rope. Then they released The Only One I Know and my mind was blown. Nobody was keying on a Hammond like that at he time. The Inspirals had their sound, but not like this. Nobody sounded so fresh and retro at the same time. The Charlatans, then and now.
Such a fantastic album!
