    Amazing footage. My grandfather came all the way from Dublin to Melbourne on a boat to see the Olympic Games. He met my grandmother here and never left. If it wasn't for the Olympic Games I would not be alive. I hope Melbourne one day hosts the Olympic Games again.

      Also from the quality of the movie negative or print used.This was filmed to movie standards by professional film makers using movie standard large format film with movie standard cameras and lenses.
      For showing in movie theatres.
      Even when you see high image quality music videos from the sixties, that is almost always because it was shot like a movie or from a movie. Like the clips used from the 1965 movie Pop Gear such as the Animals house of the rising Sun.

      I'm loving the outfits too, but martjek is right. It's a facade that hides a culture of extreme repression and intolerance. Nowadays, the jumping, smiling, waving and taking of pictures is a sign that our athletes are happy, proud and feel free to unapologetically be themselves. It's unfortunate that their happiness bothers some of you.

      @oystermornay6267 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gameguru1234 : A lot of shows in the 70s-90s were shot on videotape (not digitally) hence why they look the way that they do (and the quality of such footage is more or less fixed, unlike film which can be scanned at as high a resolution as one is willing). Most UK/Australian TV shows would have been shot on videotape with only some segments shot on film (usually exteriors).

The open air three tier grandstand was specially built for the games but is gone now. The (British) Commonwealth Games were held here in 2006 representing about 65 nations and 1/3 of humanity.

    A stunning impression of a world forever lost: where there appears to be no such thing as Olympic 'security' beyond a few sailors and cops guiding people to seats, where athletes debarked busses and mixed into what was essentially a pre-opening garden party, where television would begin its slow (but not that slow!) remaking of the games in a complex morphology and syntax of image systems, and where the only overt political text was the bloody water polo semi-final between Hungary and the Soviet Union. Now we have Paris, strange and distant and delirious, with Plans A, B AND C for the opening ceremonies in case of trouble and most of us ever poised with a characteristic vigilance: what scandal, what unexpected thing, what terrible known unknown, what sensation awaits?

    The Melbourne spectators are all well dressed and created a good impression with a large turn out at the various sports. Melbourne is the world most livable city, or 2nd most, every year in the 21st century. In a few decades it will be larger than Sydney if the current population increase continues. A nice temperate climate which is more Mediterranean in Summer.

    • @analcommando1124

      more Mediterranean in summer? ... yeah but Melbourne in July/August is COLD and cannot host an Olympics ever again. You know it being the SUMMER Olympics.

      @@analcommando1124- Brisbane could be the next Aussie host of the games. Why would Melbourne want them again as it has been there done that in 1956. The cost of running the games is very high with little financial return only the "glory" of staging them. Tokyo is a sad case currently due to CV-19.

    • @analcommando1124
      @analcommando1124 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adrianjackson2696 If you actually knew what you were talking about you'd know the IOC has streamlined the games in attempt to make the bidding cheaper, fairer and now GREATLY favours cities that already have infrastructure already built.
      The IOC has gone to great lengths to make the games cheaper and easier to host.
      Thats why cities like Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles and (most likely) Brisbane are winning the right to host games, because they have the infrastructure already built and the IOC is no longer looking at developing countries to host.
      And plenty of cities did well out of the summer games. LA in 84, Seoul 88, Sydney 2000, London 2012 were all successful. Even Atlanta in 1996 while not a great success wasn't a financial disaster and Barcelona 1992 was very successful as well.
      Few Olympics have been financial disasters. Thats a myth.
      As for Melbourne, they DID want to get the games again in 1996, a mere 40 years after hosting. One of the reasons Melbourne didn't even get close to hosting was that either Melbourne host the games later in the year like in 1956 or hold them during winter. Neither option was liked by the IOC or other countries and rightly so.
      A summer games in October means no NBA players for the basketball. A "summer" games in Melbourne in winter month of August is moronic.
      And Melbourne regardless if they wanted to or not CANNOT EVER HOST THE SUMMER GAMES.
      But for you to claim Melbourne has NEVER wanted to host the Olympics again is a lie.

I live in Melbourne and know a former athlete who was part of the 1996 bid. They definitely wanted the games but after all the loss saved Australia a lot of money. Later we had the excellent Commonwealth Games in 2006 that were better than the Olympics anyway. No cheating, doped up or big ego athletes from the USA, Russia or China as a bonus.
