      Staple Stinker is kind silly all these cards are good or have seen play it would be better to ask MTG players to talk to Yu-Gi-Oh! players just to take about the game the current meta and talk about why they like it or don't about the game and what the similarities and differences between the games. This format of video not only doesn't make sense but also misses the point of tech cards and edge cases where it's correct to play them but that kind of nuance is impossible when you produce this kind of drivel content get better please huge platform disappointed.

    I highly contest the change of heart segment.
    Change of heart is a FANTASTIC card. There's a reason it's stayed limited after it was unbanned. It's seen a moderate amount of competitive success since the day it was released from the ban list.
    I wouldn't call it a "staple" by any means, but it's a very good card, even by todays standards.

  • @RoyceCCG
    @RoyceCCG 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

    One issue I've seen on this show (and other similar segments) is ambiguity on what situation we're evaluating the cards in.
    For Yugioh, I suggest clarifying the time period: is a Staple™️ considered a card that's a staple currently, a staple at some point in the past, or a staple over many different formats throughout the game's history?
    Still, I love the format and am super happy about the recent revitalization of the Yugioh channel!

    • @drewbabe
      @drewbabe 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with the sentiment here, it should be clearer what context the evaluation is in. Would like to say that they probably use the word "staple" to just mean "significantly higher than average card value" and/or "meta-relevant." Or maybe just "good." They're using the word because it has alliteration with "stinker" that makes for a catchy name, even if it's a bit of a misnomer.

    I run Waking the Dragon often. Because no one runs it, no one expects it, so it works surprisingly often. Some issues with waking the dragon would be that it doesn't go off half the time in a game where card advantage is extremely important, it's dead going second, it's not enough to win the game on its own, and it can be negated if your opponent made a negate first or has ash blossom.

  • @segajennis2305

  • @AtomicArtumas
    @AtomicArtumas หลายเดือนก่อน

    I feel like not properly explaining how link summoning actually works, and thus stuff like link climbing existing and being a HUGE part of modern YGO, made Knightmare Phoenix seem worse than it is. Because, even though yeah, a sort of utility spell/trap removal option IS useful, most decks that run it totally wouldn't run it if you couldn't immediately link it off into a link 3 or 4 afterwards.
    Waking the Dragon is 100% neither, it's a niche card that's stupidly good when it works, but is hyper reliant on the surrounding meta - If people are running non-targeted spell/trap removal like, say, feather duster, it's god-tier. But in the usual competitive scene where people mostly rely on negates and only ever destroy face up continuous spells and traps, it's practically useless.
    It's hard to call it a bad card because it genuinely IS good, just ridiculously situational. It's also REALLY good in decks that actually run lots of traps, especially in order to use it to summon something that normally wouldn't be in such a deck.
    Change of Heart is still genuinely good, and people seem to always forget that: You take control of it. There's no restrictions on CoH. You can use your opponent's monster to link, synchro, tribute, etc., and that has almost always been it's MAIN use. You grab the opponent's monster and get rid of it for something bigger that won't go back to them.
    Block Dragon is a card that just reads "I'm an amazing card" and thus feels too easy for something like this tbqh.
    Ceolacanth... is also super niche. It has SO much potential, but requires the correct supporting cards to exist.
    It's STUPIDLY good under modern rules, provided there's genuinely good fish type monsters. Because there's NO restrictions on using those 4 monsters it summons for synchros, links, etc., so special summoning 2, tributing out ceolacanth, then linking and synchroing off all 5 monsters on the field to get several big bois and likely negate and destroy everything on your opponent's field at the same time, is honestly genuinely good. It's just... it hard requires there to be genuinely good fish type monsters in the meta. Which is where the issue comes from. There's hardly ever genuinely good fish type monsters in the meta.

    -Knightmare phoenix wasn't played in the last years, mostly after the release of Little Knight. It's played in Snake-Eye right now only for one of the otk lines with Zealantis.
    -Block Dragon and Coelacanth are cards that to be evaluated requires you to know the pool of rock and fish monsters. Like you said Block Dragon wasn't even played in the beginning.

    With that out of the way I have to agree with everyone in the comments on Change of Heart competitively and its use in the anime.
    Beyond that though, Super Deep Sea King Coelacanth was played in a few formats during the Synchro and Xyz eras as a competitive card. It may not be in any Fish deck now, but I think you need to re-evaluate how you judge these cards. The Magic game on the other channel just went on general use case or historic value rather than a narrow margin of currently competitive. Nothing wrong was stated, but it feels like there could have been better choices.

As a fish enjoyer myself, Coelicanth is a great card I dont care what people say, if you resolve it on field (not hard at all) you just win the game 95%+ of the time. @@DUKEHadToDoItToEm Tbf if we're talking current era like from when it came off the banlist to now, it's pretty much just a stinker. Talents is just way more useful cause it comes with 2 other broken effects and CoH is almost never played outside of side.

  • @t3hi84n2g
    @t3hi84n2g 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    staple doesnt mean its being played right now. staple means you keep it seperate from the rest of the filler because it will have relevance in multiple decks, meta-depending. stinker means its never been good. If you want to do 'trick' cards then come up with a 3rd category, maybe Legacy or something, that describes cards that were once great, like Mirror Force or Swords of Revealing Light. Either way though CoH is a staple

    This series always picks a bunch of very middle-of-the-road cards that *do* see current play, and then expect someone to say they're great or terrible. The host's verdict is wrong half the time, so I always have to just come to my own verdict instead.

  • @NymphieJP

    I don’t think it’s quite fair to say change of heart isn’t a staple and knightmare is when you say for both they used to be heavily used lol you should have been a wee bit clearer there. Nice to see a fresh face on the channel though. I miss Adam, but you’re a welcomed change! :)

  • @Carddaddy311

    The thing that frustrates me about this series is that it doesn't take the history of the game into account. I mean sure maybe the game is a little bit past change of heart at this point but for those of you who don't know, change of heart was banned for almost 20 years because it's that good of a card... As an old school yugioh player I'm actually kind of offended that you'd call change of heart a stinker. It's almost like calling one of the power 9 in mtg a stinker.

    Knightmare Phoenix has been overrated for a very long time in my opinion. Most of the time, if your opponent has backrow worth destroying, then they won't let you get to 2 monsters on board in the first place.

    This is a terrible take on staples definition. Just because a card was staple 2 years ago (phoenix) doesn't make it a staple. No one currently trying to find the extra slot for a phoenix, it's mostly an additional tool but not a requirement. A staple is a card that warps the game and makes it in 50-90% of decks because it's the best option. Point nibiru, ash, talents, droplet, etc. Majority are either main deck or side deck. And change of heart is a good going 2nd option specially right now that people are not ending on many omni negates and more of a you do this, I chain this to special this to do this.

    How can a banned card not be considered a staple?

    • @TimothyAtwell-hb9zv
      @TimothyAtwell-hb9zv 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tis a very true statement banned cards are there cause they were broken staples lol. Lets be honest tho some cards shouldn't be on TCGs banlists. Power creep is a heck of a drug. I feel all draw effects example pot cards in YUGIOH could be banned. The game is way too reliant on one card to open up your 10-minute combo. If blackwings every get Overpowered they will just hit feather or irata it to a hard once per turn to make it not op. I advise not taking my opinion tho cause im a Dirty labyrinth player. I only run traps, hand traps, and board breakers. I then try to let ladys dance on your face. 😂

    the logic that traps are slow and thus practically never used is such a trap itself, its precisely because traps is hardly used that when someone does set a spell/trap facedown its noteworthy because it means theyre either bluffing or its just that powerful of a card they risk using it

    • @waiyon1951
      @waiyon1951 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      to be fair this really only counts for generic non archetypal traps that has to be set to be used. good archetypal traps that can be search still definitely see play depending on decks

    • @hallyuniverse
      @hallyuniverse 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Traps are heavily used, they're just rarely main-decked because the game is much faster. You only really main deck a trap card if it's in-archetype and searchable (so you only need 1 copy so you're less likely to draw it if you go 2nd game 1), or it has applications going 1st and 2nd (Imperm, Black Goat, Transaction Rollback, basically any trap that can be used from the hand/the turn it's set/has a GY effect). 90% of side decks have trap cards in them for going first.

    • @yunfanji
      @yunfanji 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only reason is that because the game is rng, it is harder to get into the control/grind state of the game for decks with trap cards. Unlike combo decks, there aren't many tools to reach ideal setups so there is no reason anymore for the old 20/10/10. That's why Lab is one of the strongest trap decks, it has an engine that facilitates reaching that state and the liberty to do some combo plays. Independently of Lab, trap cards are strong, just not reliable. In fact, one of the best ways to force through SE going 2nd is to set 5. Traps became bad when the meta is to sit on 3+ omninegates and board wipe. While I hate the current business model, I have to say we don't see too much of that nowadays.
