He’s not a native English speaker, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a German version of the card where that translation makes the most sense, compared to ‘is banished’.
As a Shark player, I tried to make Coelecanth work believe me. But it's just kinda hard to get out to make the effect worth it. Also its (see-lo-canth). I am the only yugioh player I know or watch on youtube, that knows how to say it right.
The wording seems very different and more verbose to Magic. For example, in the third card the use of "but" is quite colloquial and less "mathematical" if you wish.
change of heart is absolutely a staple, it's just better in board breaker formats, and not as good in handtrap formats There's some handtraps that come and go but they're absolutely a staple
I feel like not properly explaining how link summoning actually works, and thus stuff like link climbing existing and being a HUGE part of modern YGO, made Knightmare Phoenix seem worse than it is. Because, even though yeah, a sort of utility spell/trap removal option IS useful, most decks that run it totally wouldn't run it if you couldn't immediately link it off into a link 3 or 4 afterwards. Waking the Dragon is 100% neither, it's a niche card that's stupidly good when it works, but is hyper reliant on the surrounding meta - If people are running non-targeted spell/trap removal like, say, feather duster, it's god-tier. But in the usual competitive scene where people mostly rely on negates and only ever destroy face up continuous spells and traps, it's practically useless. It's hard to call it a bad card because it genuinely IS good, just ridiculously situational. It's also REALLY good in decks that actually run lots of traps, especially in order to use it to summon something that normally wouldn't be in such a deck. Change of Heart is still genuinely good, and people seem to always forget that: You take control of it. There's no restrictions on CoH. You can use your opponent's monster to link, synchro, tribute, etc., and that has almost always been it's MAIN use. You grab the opponent's monster and get rid of it for something bigger that won't go back to them. Block Dragon is a card that just reads "I'm an amazing card" and thus feels too easy for something like this tbqh. Ceolacanth... is also super niche. It has SO much potential, but requires the correct supporting cards to exist. It's STUPIDLY good under modern rules, provided there's genuinely good fish type monsters. Because there's NO restrictions on using those 4 monsters it summons for synchros, links, etc., so special summoning 2, tributing out ceolacanth, then linking and synchroing off all 5 monsters on the field to get several big bois and likely negate and destroy everything on your opponent's field at the same time, is honestly genuinely good. It's just... it hard requires there to be genuinely good fish type monsters in the meta. Which is where the issue comes from. There's hardly ever genuinely good fish type monsters in the meta.
Icl I love the concept of staple or stinker but I think the execution is sometimes a bit poor I'm not saying the hosts aren't knowledgeable but I mean the change of heart thing is questionable, not to mention the weird looks after the guest mentioned traps aren't rlly played in competitive... like he's not 100% correct but he's not wrong either. Traps are never really played in YGO unless: - You're playing a trap deck - Its an engine requirement - It's a floodgate - It's Daruma Karma Cannon (it's a very, very impactful trap card)
I don't know, I feel like these cards weren't the right choices: -Change of Heart is defenetely not a stinker, but many people already told that. -Knightmare phoenix wasn't played in the last years, mostly after the release of Little Knight. It's played in Snake-Eye right now only for one of the otk lines with Zealantis. -Block Dragon and Coelacanth are cards that to be evaluated requires you to know the pool of rock and fish monsters. Like you said Block Dragon wasn't even played in the beginning.
Let me just say sir, I love your energy, and I look forward to seeing you as the host. You seem much more energetic than Adam, who was a great guy don't get me wrong, but a more peppy and engaged host was sorely needed. With that out of the way I have to agree with everyone in the comments on Change of Heart competitively and its use in the anime. Beyond that though, Super Deep Sea King Coelacanth was played in a few formats during the Synchro and Xyz eras as a competitive card. It may not be in any Fish deck now, but I think you need to re-evaluate how you judge these cards. The Magic game on the other channel just went on general use case or historic value rather than a narrow margin of currently competitive. Nothing wrong was stated, but it feels like there could have been better choices. So in other words, you owe Thoralf an apology! but in al seriousness this was a fun introduction, and I think you're gonna do great. I'll start catchin up on vids.
yeah change of heart is just good, calling it a stinker should be illegal (regardless if it was "seeing play" or not because OBVIOUSLY particular metas are going to make that far too variable). As a fish enjoyer myself, Coelicanth is a great card I dont care what people say, if you resolve it on field (not hard at all) you just win the game 95%+ of the time. Just because fish in general are not played much does not make coelicanth a shit card.
Agreed. Haven't played in years but even the "can't be targeted" monster effects mentioned in the video could never make a card with such a low cost and such a potentially devastating effect a "stinker". Wish there was a middle ground because I wouldn't really call it a staple must have in every deck, but it's FAAAAR from being a stinker
@@DUKEHadToDoItToEm Tbf if we're talking current era like from when it came off the banlist to now, it's pretty much just a stinker. Talents is just way more useful cause it comes with 2 other broken effects and CoH is almost never played outside of side.
staple doesnt mean its being played right now. staple means you keep it seperate from the rest of the filler because it will have relevance in multiple decks, meta-depending. stinker means its never been good. If you want to do 'trick' cards then come up with a 3rd category, maybe Legacy or something, that describes cards that were once great, like Mirror Force or Swords of Revealing Light. Either way though CoH is a staple
My dude Thoralf was scammed 😂 CoH is definitely NOT a stinker. But also I wouldn't really call it a staple. Is Knightmare Phoenix still considered a staple?
"So change of Heart isnt good anymore because the morons designing everything now do crack before work and make everything an Egyptian God card with an entire archtypes that instantly summons 6 of them turn one whil calling you stupid for still giving them money for this garbage game" Sounds legit
Man calls a staple side deck card that is in basically every Side deck right now that is so good it's at 1 a stinker... Change of Heart is one of the best cards in the game. It's only played going second, not first.
I play traptrix so "you have to set traps during your turn and then you can play them starting in your opponent's turn" feels so wrong to hear since I'm always activating traps on my first turn, setting them on my opponent's turn, etc etc
Are Leoni and Adam still there? I really liked their videos and there wasnt something like a goodbye video... Ofc it's understandable if it is some intern stuff going on and you dont want to give any insights. But some kind of reply would be really cool 🙂
This series always picks a bunch of very middle-of-the-road cards that *do* see current play, and then expect someone to say they're great or terrible. The host's verdict is wrong half the time, so I always have to just come to my own verdict instead.
I don’t think it’s quite fair to say change of heart isn’t a staple and knightmare is when you say for both they used to be heavily used lol you should have been a wee bit clearer there. Nice to see a fresh face on the channel though. I miss Adam, but you’re a welcomed change! :)
The thing that frustrates me about this series is that it doesn't take the history of the game into account. I mean sure maybe the game is a little bit past change of heart at this point but for those of you who don't know, change of heart was banned for almost 20 years because it's that good of a card... As an old school yugioh player I'm actually kind of offended that you'd call change of heart a stinker. It's almost like calling one of the power 9 in mtg a stinker.
Coelacanth is pronounced “SEE-luh-canth” with the last a making the same a sound as in hay. I’ve heard the middle a making a couple different sounds from uh to ah to oh though lmao
In the future I think when you show the cards you shouldn't show prices beside them until the person evaluates the card, if you are trying to guess as well showing the price of an expensive card could give the answer away
Knightmare Phoenix has been overrated for a very long time in my opinion. Most of the time, if your opponent has backrow worth destroying, then they won't let you get to 2 monsters on board in the first place.
"This is a card that yugi used a lot" pretty sure that's false. Bakura used it at least once, Yugi used brain control to defeat Slipher but I have no memory of him using change of heart in the anime.
The reason for colecanth being bad is stupid. Getting 2 things on the field is super easy barely an inconvenience. Decs these days can put 5 monsters on the board without even using their normal summon.
This is a terrible take on staples definition. Just because a card was staple 2 years ago (phoenix) doesn't make it a staple. No one currently trying to find the extra slot for a phoenix, it's mostly an additional tool but not a requirement. A staple is a card that warps the game and makes it in 50-90% of decks because it's the best option. Point nibiru, ash, talents, droplet, etc. Majority are either main deck or side deck. And change of heart is a good going 2nd option specially right now that people are not ending on many omni negates and more of a you do this, I chain this to special this to do this.
Change of Heart maybe not a staple, but it's definetly not a stinker. It's still a good going second card, you either get a free something or forces an opponent interaction.
The hosts should really explain that no one ever tribute summons. Also, withholding info brings the overall quality of the video and viewing experience way down
Tis a very true statement banned cards are there cause they were broken staples lol. Lets be honest tho some cards shouldn't be on TCGs banlists. Power creep is a heck of a drug. I feel all draw effects example pot cards in YUGIOH could be banned. The game is way too reliant on one card to open up your 10-minute combo. If blackwings every get Overpowered they will just hit feather or irata it to a hard once per turn to make it not op. I advise not taking my opinion tho cause im a Dirty labyrinth player. I only run traps, hand traps, and board breakers. I then try to let ladys dance on your face. 😂
“In order for a card to be considered a staple, it either has to be on the current list of banned cards or be present in X% of top 8s in the past Y years.” This would fix a lot of issues that people have with the subjectivity of this video format.
The only people who care whether or not the guests get the guesses right are people who only care about winning or losing and don't see anything else. The guessing game is just a vehicle for bringing players from different games together.
I like this new guy! He is very good at explaining stuff, and he seems like he has great potential as a presenter on the channel :D (Don't know if you're the one who runs the channel, but if so, hi!)
the logic that traps are slow and thus practically never used is such a trap itself, its precisely because traps is hardly used that when someone does set a spell/trap facedown its noteworthy because it means theyre either bluffing or its just that powerful of a card they risk using it
to be fair this really only counts for generic non archetypal traps that has to be set to be used. good archetypal traps that can be search still definitely see play depending on decks
Traps are heavily used, they're just rarely main-decked because the game is much faster. You only really main deck a trap card if it's in-archetype and searchable (so you only need 1 copy so you're less likely to draw it if you go 2nd game 1), or it has applications going 1st and 2nd (Imperm, Black Goat, Transaction Rollback, basically any trap that can be used from the hand/the turn it's set/has a GY effect). 90% of side decks have trap cards in them for going first.
The only reason is that because the game is rng, it is harder to get into the control/grind state of the game for decks with trap cards. Unlike combo decks, there aren't many tools to reach ideal setups so there is no reason anymore for the old 20/10/10. That's why Lab is one of the strongest trap decks, it has an engine that facilitates reaching that state and the liberty to do some combo plays. Independently of Lab, trap cards are strong, just not reliable. In fact, one of the best ways to force through SE going 2nd is to set 5. Traps became bad when the meta is to sit on 3+ omninegates and board wipe. While I hate the current business model, I have to say we don't see too much of that nowadays.
Change of Heart is seeing more play in side decks lately, so we'll give Thoralf a bonus point for his foresight! Check out an example deck list here: - bit.ly/4b1pGUB

WE'RE SO BACK WE'RE SO BACK WE'RE SO BACK WE'RE SO BACK WE'RE SO BACK WE'RE SO BACK WE'RE SO BACK
13:15 interesting that Thoralf read it as "in the graveyard or banishment" when this card hasn't been errata'd to use this new terminology.
Ummm…. The card says it right there and when you look up the card it says that exact description.
@@PhenomenalVibez The card definitely does not say Banishment nor is this card ever errata'd to have that text.
Next expansion they bring ULTRAancient Fishy Boy you can't pronounce, which is the same except it's a Link monster
change of heart is absolutely a staple, it's just better in board breaker formats, and not as good in handtrap formats
There's some handtraps that come and go but they're absolutely a staple
Icl I love the concept of staple or stinker but I think the execution is sometimes a bit poor
I'm not saying the hosts aren't knowledgeable but I mean the change of heart thing is questionable, not to mention the weird looks after the guest mentioned traps aren't rlly played in competitive... like he's not 100% correct but he's not wrong either. Traps are never really played in YGO unless:
- You're playing a trap deck
- Its an engine requirement
- It's a floodgate
- It's Daruma Karma Cannon (it's a very, very impactful trap card)
Adam left big shoes to fill, but you did good :)
oh he left the channel? why?
I don't know, I feel like these cards weren't the right choices:
-Change of Heart is defenetely not a stinker, but many people already told that.
Change Of Heart is definitely a staple.
It's more of a side deck option now. Not really a staple. Triple Tactics Talent is more of a staple than Change of Heart
@@DUKEHadToDoItToEmyeah its just one of the nuances of the series, but oh well.
@@friskydrinklunkybank1108 Right. But it was banned because in its time it was too much of a staple.
"coal'icanth"
Wow. Somebody wasn't a dinosaur kid.
Coelacanth is pronounced like "seal-akanth".
Wait wheres is adam ... 😢
"So change of Heart isnt good anymore because the morons designing everything now do crack before work and make everything an Egyptian God card with an entire archtypes that instantly summons 6 of them turn one whil calling you stupid for still giving them money for this garbage game"
Sounds legit
Man calls a staple side deck card that is in basically every Side deck right now that is so good it's at 1 a stinker... Change of Heart is one of the best cards in the game. It's only played going second, not first.
The pronunciation of Coelacanth is, for whatever reason, "SEE-la-canth". We've all pronounced it wrong the first time we saw the word.
I play traptrix so "you have to set traps during your turn and then you can play them starting in your opponent's turn" feels so wrong to hear since I'm always activating traps on my first turn, setting them on my opponent's turn, etc etc
Coelacanth is pronounced "See-low-kanth" or "See-luh-kanth"
Ive seen it pronounced both ways by experts.
Atem used Change of heart once
Bakura used it once
Yuugi himself never used the card.
First card already wrong. Change of Heart is a side staple. And then cslling Knightmare Phoenix when it's olaued less than Change of Heart.
The reason for colecanth being bad is stupid. Getting 2 things on the field is super easy barely an inconvenience. Decs these days can put 5 monsters on the board without even using their normal summon.
cardmarket yugioh is back. i am happy. welcome back! we've been patiently waiting for more cardmarket yugioh content!
It's still a staple, most snake-eyes lists ran it (at least the ones who topped and won). Several first place YCS lists has knightmare phoenix in it.
Change of Heart maybe not a staple, but it's definetly not a stinker.
It's still a good going second card, you either get a free something or forces an opponent interaction.
9:22 I remember this card was meta for awhile, can't say it was never good. I remember playing against this many times, it was in a frog deck i think.
Hold up! We call that a Threaten effect? Everybody knows that effect is an Act of Treason!
Woah, wait no. Yugi NEVER used change of heart. If he did, then maybe once, maybe.
The hosts should really explain that no one ever tribute summons. Also, withholding info brings the overall quality of the video and viewing experience way down
I think another good way to describe the Extra Deck would be Companions on release (pre nerf)
Yugi never used change of heart. Thea was Change of heart in a bakura episode
Change of heart is arguably one of the best board breakers in the game, especially after baronne getting banned.
Coelocanth is actually really viable in Ghoti. Paces is a free way to get it out and also you can just abyss keeper it onto the field.
Doesn’t Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth see a splash in many fish decks that can cheat it into play like Ghoti?
I think you guys might need to get some more... Competitive players to rate these cards prior to msking the videos.
Interesting to hear that yu-gi-oh! Also has a hexproof/ward problem to some extent.
How can a banned card not be considered a staple?
Staple or Stinker let’s go!!!
This guy isnt Adam or Lainey. But looks culty... Weird that they didnt do an intro bideo on the main chammel and tbh
With change of heart seeing play, I went 5 for 5 (I play magic not yugioh)
people talking about change of heart but can we talk about how this man is a synchro fish denier
They’re back!!!!
If bro said Block Dragon was a bad card my head would've imploded
Change of Hearth stinker. Guess im playing a diferent game.
bro!! who uses knightmare phoenix now???
Change of heart, mind control played good amount since Omi negates are gone.
Whi is the long haired guy? Also the small guy wasn't very good today lol
I don't think Yugi actually played change of heart.
“In order for a card to be considered a staple, it either has to be on the current list of banned cards or be present in X% of top 8s in the past Y years.”
This would fix a lot of issues that people have with the subjectivity of this video format.
The only people who care whether or not the guests get the guesses right are people who only care about winning or losing and don't see anything else. The guessing game is just a vehicle for bringing players from different games together.
I like this new guy! He is very good at explaining stuff, and he seems like he has great potential as a presenter on the channel :D
(Don't know if you're the one who runs the channel, but if so, hi!)
10:26 "cannot be destroyed except by batle. THis is useless" O boy
We got some Gandalf/Frodo energy going on here
Chnage of Heart is Good wtf, Saying its a Stinker is Wild
the logic that traps are slow and thus practically never used is such a trap itself, its precisely because traps is hardly used that when someone does set a spell/trap facedown its noteworthy because it means theyre either bluffing or its just that powerful of a card they risk using it
to be fair this really only counts for generic non archetypal traps that has to be set to be used. good archetypal traps that can be search still definitely see play depending on decks
It's pronounced 'Seal-uh-canth'
He looks like Asmongold if he took care of himself
If he doesnt know how to pronounce Coelacanth, then it's not a staple!
They are back!
