I would guess that big buildings are a status symbol, and attract a lot of tourism as well. As pretty as they are, a lot of people could definitely be fed and housed with the money spent on them as well

But one thing that you said "how people could be fed and housed with the money",is really a nice perspective but sadly we could just talk about it. @@rajkv a lot of people I met called the city by its old name which is why I have been referring to it as Aurangabad, but I appreciate that it has a new name which means a lot to local people for the Chhatrapati Sambhaji it has been named after.
