They recorded this song with David Bowie in 1981 at put it on their 1982 album Hot Space. If you haven’t reacted to the studio version yet, you might like to consider doing so. This song was co-written and recorded as a duet with David Bowie. You can also find online their voices alone without the music track which is great to listen to. Bass line was stolen by Vanilla Ice. i like your detailed reactions to queen, i can see your joy. roger said the last part was always a bit to low for him so he really had a hart time singin under pressure.
Freddie Mercury didn't write the majority of the vocals to this song. David Bowie pretty much wrote the vocals and was working on it in a studio at Queen's favorite recording studio in Montreux (yes, that very same Montreux on the lake Geneva shoreline). Queen happened to be there working on a new album at the time as well and they thought before they went out to grab some dinner that they would stop by the studio Bowie was in and say hello. When they stopped by that caught Bowie at a point where he could not figure out where he was going with the song. He was particularly having a problem with how to start the song. Queen asked him to play what he had and as he was doing that John Deacon picked up a bass guitar and started playing what is now the infamous bass line to the song. Freddie started be bopping and scatting and the rest is history. Bowie decided to give the song to them to release on their album because he felt that their contribution is what made the song. On a side note, the guys went out for pizza after their impromptu jam session and Deacon forgot what he had come up with for the bass line. They had to work a little bit latter on but it came back to him and now that really is all history now.
It was Queen who were recording at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Bowie arrived to record vocals for one of Queen's tracks (not this one). None of Queen had come up with lyrics they were happy with for what was still a half-finished backing track so Bowie wrote them. John Deacon had been jamming a very similar bass riff for days before, when they were trying to remember it Bowie changed it slightly.
I understood that Bowie lived nearby and was in the studio working on his own thing but either way the majority of the vocals were Bowie's because he had come up with the idea of the song and had been little by little working on it. I remember one documentary where Brian and Roger briefly discussed it because it was Roger in that documentary that mentioned that at some point they went out for pizza and when they got back to the studio John couldn't remember the bass line. Roger implied that he was the one that remembered it and talked John through it again. I have noticed that certain band members remember things differently though so who knows just how correct that is. Roger also said that at some point in the evening they separated Bowie and Freddie into different studios where they could not hear what the other was doing and they were supposed to come up with vocals (anything off of the top of their heads) that would hopefully work with what the other guy was doing. Bowie got caught cheating though. He was standing right outside of the door to the studio Freddie was in and had the door slightly open.
I'd heard similar about Bowie listening in on Mercury, but I think everyone involved agreed, Bowie had the idea for the song's subject matter and wrote almost all the lyrics.

It's still odd for me to hear Freddie singing all the lyrics, I keep expecting to hear David Bowie's unique voice. And the tempo of this live performance is slightly quicker than the original recording.
As brilliant as this is, wouldn't you love to hear Dimash do his take on this song? Montserrat Caballé is the Spanish soprano with whom Freddie did some epic collabs. She just died on 6 OCT. They were great friends.

I told you you would love it 👍
Also, have you heard one that So-Hyang does in King of masked singers called Day Day? A lot of that song is done in a rap. Very cool.
Steve buckskinner 54 Yes! That's one of my favorites. I've done a reaction to it!
Wow this song has good History!!! Thank you so much!
Freddie sings this song a bit different at each performance! Proving that he is singing live-🙂
Freddie's vocals are really awesome in "Who Wants to Live Forever". .....And if you like transitions, try "Innuendo"
The "de dohs" are also vocal warm ups, which he did before every concert.
Noblemiss Love It
amazing reactions man🎸🤟🏻 yeah and under pressure was stolen by vanilla ice .. ice ice baby ya know.. ice is back „with a brand new invention“ ..
oh if u want to hear roger sing please react to „Man on fire“ by Roger Taylor or „No one but you“ by Queen (sung by roger and brian for freddie after he passed ) 🤟🏻🎸✨
Hey man thank you so much!! I definitely check them out!!
TraENT no problem 😂🎸🤟🏻 enjoy !!
Also, of course, "I'm in love with my car" which is a Roger song.
Dawn Sutton oh yeah of course pretty dope👌🏻
I‘m soo sad that I don’t have a car to fall in love with 😱😢
Sounds like we have a new fellow queen fan
Oh yeah!!
Watch the whole live at Wembley concert, Phenomenal!!
Ed Carter Definitely
Great reaction!
Russell H Thanks alot
Just found your channel with Queen, like how you react, just hoping your OK🙏❤
Queen was with Freddie the best live band ever... and Roger Taylor is as a drummer who sings totaly underrated
It was a tense time politically. Also he adored a woman who sings opera and they did a song together. I think they did a whole album.
I’m not sure if this means anything but Freddy was born in Barcelona?
The start allways reminds me of the scene from "Close encounters" LOL
You should hear the version live with David Bowie
Yall are matching 😁
One of the few songs where Roger DIDN’T take the high notes. He says this was very hard for him to sing that big moment at the end because it was actually really low for him.
king of rock
Love your video
Thank you!
The beginning is not technically part of the song it was just to warm the crowd up.
R LI Loved it
😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍
Vanilla ice-ice-baby! Love from London!
What was it in the beginning?)
This was released with David Bowie.
The song that you're thinking about is Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby. Vanilla Ice took that beat from Queen
The beginning could be dubbed "Dueling voices." :)
Love it
@TraENT I’m a new subscriber that I’ve you said you would like to hear more Brian Mays guitar solos . I can put you in touch with a whole bunch of them. I’ve been a long time queen fan and I know a lot about them. Just go to Brian May guitar solos. You can also look up the Brian May band he’s done a lot of solo work. 🎸🎸
Even though there’s no live version, could you react to The Show Must Go On? Some do Freddie’s best vocals there.
Jakfrost25 Sure will
weeeeeeeeeee are the champions my friends.....
Flowing Flo 😁
Vanilla ice - ice ice baby
Vanilla ice stole it! 😂
Watch the video with queen and David bowie
Melissa Curtis Sure thing
The other song ur thinking about was ice ice baby
Vanilla Ice sampled "Under Pressure" for his song "Ice Ice Baby" th-cam.com/video/rog8ou-ZepE/w-d-xo.html
Please react to "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" by Sam and Dave th-cam.com/video/T246rhSoHes/w-d-xo.html
Sorry meant ice
Van winkel ripped it for "ice ice baby"...
It's still odd for me to hear Freddie singing all the lyrics, I keep expecting to hear David Bowie's unique voice. And the tempo of this live performance is slightly quicker than the original recording.
They wrote this with David Bowie just jamming one night. Vanilla ice stole it and got sued for it.
The bass line sounds similar to vanilla ice
💛
'Daaaaaayyyyyyyyy O' comes from Banana Song: th-cam.com/video/6Tou8-Cz8is/w-d-xo.html
I have watched most of your queen blogs. You are really knowledgable about music.
Thank you!!
ice ice baby
As brilliant as this is, wouldn't you love to hear Dimash do his take on this song? Montserrat Caballé is the Spanish soprano with whom Freddie did some epic collabs. She just died on 6 OCT. They were great friends.
renault I would absolutely love to hear my boy sing one
Vanilla Ice stole it and got sued for it. So now all the Queen members are credited for song writing.
ice ice baby vanilla ice
