I am really enjoying your videos. I’m a rare cask beer fan from California and I haven’t been to the UK since 1998 when I was only 15. So, I can’t wait to return and visit some of these pubs. It is looks to be everything I could dream of!
I've just moved to Bury St Ed and have been to a couple of the pubs mentioned here. It is a great place for pubs and beer and there are a wide range of prices (Beerhouse and their other pubs are the most expensive in my experience but their beers are nice). Wetherspoons is..well, Wetherspoons, and usually busy. In my (new) village, the community centre has a Friday happy hour with good prices. May try it tommorrow.
Nice to see the name "Wherry" in a prominent position on the bar of the Oaks Barn. I grew up about a mile from the Wherry Hotel, Oulton Broad - the diagonally opposite end of Suffolk from Bury St Edmunds! If we were travelling by road to the Midlands, we would pass through Bury, Newmarket and Cambridge - long before the A14 was upgraded! Suffolk born and Suffolk bred - strong in the arm and thick in the head!! Cheerioo!
Bury resident here..... really enjoyed that. Couple of things Edmund wasn't buried here. The name just means the borough of St. Edmund. Glad you got to The Dove. Many of the residents will tell you it's the best in Bury (think you were swayed by the novelty value of The Nutshell - fine pub, but The Dove beats it hands down!) The Dove has a fabulous range of beers almost all still priced at well under three quid a pint! The bar you sat in hosts some really nice live acoustic music on every second Tuesday evening. As you said, no TV, no piped music, no fruit machines (and NO LAGER!!!!!!!!!), also as you pointed out, cash only. I can see why you went to Vespers, but I'm afraid I can't afford to. Yes, it's Belgian beer (fabulous) and you drink it in smaller quantities but at 14 or 15 quid a pint - ouch! The Cannon is really nice and has a lovely garden, too. Opposite this is Suffolk's only Michelin star restaurant, too! Beerhouse has always been a favourite, as well. Really nice range of beers and that 'beer garden' also contains a great pizzeria. Order and they cook from scratch. To be honest, personally, I think you covered all the best pubs in town, although we do have a really top notch Wetherspoons too, near to The Nutshell, internally well worth a look (and cheap beer and food, of course).
@@adsfisher I remember it being a pub quite a while ago before it closed and became other things. Glad to see it back and I will certainly be venturing in soon!
I live near Bury St Edmunds and you have really opened my eyes to the drinking scene in the town. I've only lived here 25 years, but it takes a stranger to show me around. Thank you.
Great to see that you made it to the Dove. One of the best pubs in Bury. Rose and Crown is worth a visit if you come again, and the Rising Sun has also returned to being a proper pub again. The beer festival at the Cathedral is also legendary..
Big up Vespers! All the great local pubs though, Bury is fortunate to have so many. Some additions on the next visit are The Rose & Crown (proper traditional pub), and the newly reopened Rising Sun.
You love Ipswich? Terrible place and I’m from the town. Bury is lovely, probably has one of the nicest weather spoons in the country, beautiful building.
New to the page so apologies if its already been done. You should head to Ipswich down the road from Bury St Edmunds. Main pubs to check out, The Arbour house, The Dove, The Thomas Wolsey. Also at 16:22 the huge regal looking building with the big pillars out the front is the local Spoons pub. It has to be one of the nicest looking spoons in the country.
Nice town Bury and some great pubs you visited. The bury beerhouse looks superb, handy for the station too. Never had the chance to visit yet. Hope you enjoyed Cambridge too, you can’t go wrong really with plenty of real ale pubs to visit
Thanks for video. If you ever come up to the poor north try The tin of sardines pub in Durham . It’s tiny & right on the riverside. Great in the summer. 👍🏆🇬🇧
Interesting I’m not familiar with that one but I’ve done Durham once before (not on video) and it’s definitely on the list for a future vid! Cheers for the tip 🍻
Wow!! what a great video, The Dove is certainly my favourite pub ever, and Oakes Barn too. Such a pity you picked a wet day. You show Bury (pronounced "BERRY") as a really nice place to visit and stay, I've only lived here for 70 of my 74 years so what do I know!! I am in the Dove bit drinking Adnams Mosaic, with Snooks the Jack Russel teasing Roger the landlord. Beer and banter and fun company what more can you ask for from a pub, AND just look at those prices! Love the Dove and all things Bury, apart from the rain. You have done us proud with your video, cheers and next time you're in I'll buy you a pint. By the way Bury St Edmunds has just won the UK's most dog friendly town, what's not to love about this place. CHEERS
Apologies for the Yorkshire pronunciation! I’ll definitely come back to Bury, it was one of my favourite pubs crawls of the year, absolutely fantastic town! Thanks for watching! Cheers 🍻
Many moons ago now I used to drink at the Six Bells in Horringer when Roger was the landlord, I was only a young un but he was always welcoming and a top landlord then and looks like he still is now.
I believe this is the first TH-cam pub crawl for Bury and has me looking forward to returning next March for a few days to hit up most of these, especially The Cannon and Beer House, my old regulars.
Every time i happen to walk past the nutshell i have to have a gander through the window to see what type of folk are in there. They used to have a dead cat hanging up that was hundreds of years old.
I think you will find that the smallest pub is the Signal Box Inn at Cleethorpes Light railway, (Lincolnshire), once an old signal box it can accomodate 6 people, 4 customers and 2 staff, no more, measures 8ft x 8ft. But had a large range of real ales, when we went and very good they were to. In fact they claim to be possibly the smallest pub with draught ale on the planet. Check it out, you won't be disappointed. The nutshell is 15ft x 7ft, so much bigger.
New here, Great content..... although.... not sure who the young lady is that was accompanying you, but seemed a little left out of it... possibly should have got her to review her gluton free beer in the Belgian bar? 👏👍👌🤘✌🖖🤙🍻
This is a bit spooky for me. Moments ago I was remembering a pub in New Barnet, North London, which claimed to be the smallest pub in Britain. Admittedly it was 52 years ago and I used to drink Abbot Ale there. So the first thing I saw at The Nutshell was that same beer also 52 years later. I am a Londoner living in British Columbia, Canada and seeing those gorgeous pubs makes me very sad.

BTW my original Pound note is still on the ceiling 45 years later

The beer in The Beerhouse used to be brewed in the outbuilding at the side, but when they won the contract to supply Hotel Chocolat they had to expand and moved the brewery to Ingham just outside Bury. I have not tried Vespers yet, but now I see they have Zot, I will give it a try, maybe later this week.

I mentioned the controversy in the description. It depends on how you define a pub and how you’d measure “smallest” really. Its certainly impressively small and worth a visit.
Half of the “smallest” pubs are not really pubs in the traditional sense though. More converted shops into micropubs or even converted signal boxes or sheds.
@ I wouldn’t mind micropubs being in contention but I draw the line when venues don’t have any in house toilet! May as well consider food trucks that serve bottled beer at that point! That’s just my opinion though, I think Guinness have a very loose idea of what is considered a pub!

The Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole, on the North York Moors (Heartbeat country) near Whitby and Goathland, is quite small, too.
Bury St Edmunds is a lovely place. Is also one of the only times I’d recommend a weatherspoons, is in the old corn exchange is a beautiful building.
Had to laugh when he said ' we're heading for the Nutshell' - he was heading in the wrong direction😉
The Dove is a real gem and I'm very happy that it's my local. There's always an excellent choice of well kept ales there that changes almost daily.
