Rory you are the one who is at fault. The referendum was not about a new trade treaty. In fact p.m. Cameron said this referendum is not about renegotiating Britain's membership with the EU. He said if brexit wins we would trade with the EU on WTO like the USA china and the rest of the world.USA has increases trade with the EU under the same terms that is offered to the UK. You can not get a trade deal with the EU while still been a member of the EU so every one that voted to leave voted to trade with the EU by default. WtO is not perfect it is a stepping stone to free independent United Kingdom. WTO does not cover services or air space. A new open skys agreement has been signed with USA and plans in place with EU. The city of London has put plans in place for trade and services to carry on for city of London. World trade organisation rules needs add ons and the more preparation you do the smoother the transaction. Had your government spent more time putting these into place we would have been out of the EU with np money paid. It is remainers people like you and Prime Minister May trying to keep Britain in the EU and leaving in word only.We have done all the debating before the referendum. It time for MPs to leave on WTO like the people voted for 3 years ago.. Remainers are putting this country in danger of Dictatorship by the British government or the EU German dictatorship by refusing the except the Democratic vote. We do not need a vote in the commons to leave on WTO as that what the people voted for by default when 17 million voted to brexit. . You lost leave and then after a year or so ask the people if the want to join the EU again. Once the people see project fear is fake news they never want to join A trading block that was 20th century and is now not fit for purpose in the 21st century. The EU is the only trading block in the world to be in stagnation for the last 10 years. The EU after 10 years of stagnation has now moved into recession. Time is to start building a great Britain for our kids. Let the Germans build they own European Empire. We the British have to raise the bar for our political class. Stop giving jobs on gender and ethnic minorities return to the best person for the job regardless of colour race or gender let the most talented rise to the top. This country needs the best leadership at this point and not political correctness that will lead to skidrow and poverty for the workers. Leave the socialist EU Flatshare behind it's very 20th century no longer fit for purpose in the 21st century. It now cost less to get products from China to London than it does from Paris to London. 21st Century Global trading is the time of the container ship and the internet. Never in the history of Britain is it so unimportant to trade with your neighbour .It is now global trade at the Flick of a switch.. I see Mercedes-Benz to build it new factory free from EU Red tape producing cars in Russia that tells you how unimportant the EU is twentieth first century Global trade. Wake you educated fool

Indeed; it seems extolling the virtues of compromise is seen as extremism by some of the partisans in these comments.
Not particularly surprising however; online comments have been the absolute nadir of political debate for years, and the incivility has unfortunately now infected large swathes even of conventional political debate.

Rory Stewart is a very practical politician. Let us compromise and move on with our lives. I cannot argue with this, it is very democratic. As a business student from an American business school I know for the UK to leave the EU is a big mistake. This is a challenge for a democratic republic. Different political factions must compromise in order for the country to move on. But if you know this will hurt your country's ability to sustain the best standard living for your citizens do you sit idly and go with the crowd? Sometimes politicians have to lead their people in the right direction. This can be political suicide in a democracy where most people do not understand and will tragically follow the wrong path. Andrew Adonis is the only one who is trying to warn the Oxford Union (educated?) crowd. Unfortunately, he only received a polite support at the end of his speech. While I agree with Adonis' arguments it may require too much understanding of European civilization. This crowd is Oxford Union, the best and the brightest of England and the world, and yet they do seem to appreciate what is going on. What a shame. If people like Michael Woods and Bethany Hughs do not understand, then you cannot expect the average citizen to understand.

      Fair enough,
The only concerning thing is the fact that the EU is very powerful, so maybe its not a good idea to play hardball with somebody twice our size.
I wonder if, through good negotiation and authentic governance, they'll see the mutual benefit of giving favourable terms to us.
If we still cant negotiate a good deal with a fresh-faced and promising new PM, *then* we can play hard ball, or some other method.
But i reckon it should be more of a last resort due to the fact we'll likely come off worse, and we wont lose out through failing at the negotiating route. But once we've picked up the hardball, theres no going back.

Just what we don't need IMO sorry to say, too smart, principled - the country need electro-convulsive therapy in the form of a BJ, so maybe in 5-10 years we can go 'jeez whoever thought following liars and cheats was a good idea? WTF were we thinking?' and start clawing our way back to reality. Sad but true - we need catharsis like Germany needed another war, country insane.

@@windsurfer_LA ok whe're on a same page here... I know a lot of reasonable remainers who say we should go out with no deal, because they understand that respecting democratic vote is far more important than staying in EU... And im sick of these stories "we are going to be better/worse outside of EU“, lets be honest here" WE DONT FUCKIN KNOW", nobody knows how future looks... Rory Stewart a lot of words with no democratic meaning or direction. Compromise takes two sides to agree. The EU don't know the meaning of compromise. I don't know of any other Nation who had to give up sovereignty in order do a trade deal. After all we were told by Ted Heath and other MP's that the Common Market was a trading organisation. Duplicity at work.

    • @thenotfreshprince

To take it from another point of view, the EU is obviously not going to give us what we see to be a 'fair' (basically what we have currently) deal, because how would it benefit? It's all well and good we want sovereignty, but I think that is wholly dependent on our ability to also be able to realise that this is in fact the best deal we are going to get. We have made the sovereign decision to get the best deal possible without receiving any sort of empathy from the EU because that's what we apparently wanted.

Stewart would be ideal casting for the role of Richard Rich in Bolt's 'A Man For All Seasons', going from his self-incriminating statements here. When did 52% in a vote become "an even division"? He supported the abolition of the Kingdom into becoming little more than a Grand Duchy under the control of a foreign power in the 2016 Referendum, in that he is on the side of Adonis, regardless of his attempts here to pretend otherwise here. The country voted to Leave the eu, & the current political order was elected to the House of Commons in 2017 on manifestos pledging to obey that instruction from the people & legally implement that decision, & a majority of those politicians have done the exact opposite for the last 2 years, using parliamentary process to impede it. This appears not to concern Stewart, which in itself is a warning against him.

52/48 is a pretty even split, I don't think that's too much of a stretch to be honest.

His eloquent renunciation of the people of britains "democratic vote !" Only puts him , in my view, deeper inside the hole which conservatives have dug for themselves.
Therefore rendering this speech about as meaningful as his hedgehog rant.🤗
