    Not sure why so many people sleep on the J. It already makes 290-305 hp stock is super reliable and they cost like nothing. People will spend crazy money to get a K or another 4 cylinder build to 350 400 hp and at that point reliability is nothing compared stock to a cheap stock J swap. Sure it's like 100 pounds heavier doesnt rev high and is a van motor at its heart but its cheap reliable horsepower.

    • @Catbus-Driver
      @Catbus-Driver 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's because at the end of the day, the J swap still isn't as refined, doesn't fit as well(oil pan clearance) and the aftermarket is practically non existent. The K's make similar power figures with less headaches in the end. Reliability has never been an issue for sub 500hp K series either, go ask Haltech.
      Really, the only benefit a J has is the low end torque and sound. Ks are in some of the fastest proper race cars in the world for a reason.

    • @Talynen
      @Talynen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Catbus-Driver The J is save now, pay later. A good K is pay now, save later. Usually a better end product too.

      @@Catbus-Driver there is a new company making another kit for the j swap and it seems to be going awesome from the teases posted. The j is starting to pick up aftermarket wise as well. As of right now, you need to look deeply a tad bit, but can definitely find some aftermarket support for it. There's also some examples of these engines being turbocharged without touching internals and reaching about 800whp iirc

    • @TheBradszone
      @TheBradszone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Catbus-Driver agree with everything but the K's making similar power figures. Making a K series touch 300whp without internals, porting, and 1-2k of mods isn't happening. If you mean turbo/sc'ing them, well we got an issue there too. Stock internals on a K will go to 500? A stock internal j32a2 has been pushed to 700whp on just north of 20lbs, I can even link you the post where I asked specifically for peoples builds and they spammed me with about 10+ builds of the j32/j35 1st gens making 500-600whp reliably. So.. yeah. But what would you expect? They're both amazingly made engines with high hp/liter from fucking honda, and of course the 6 cylinder is gonna outpace the 4 cylinder.
      It seriously is a crying shame the J series doesn't have more aftermarket support. The OEM parts are so interchangable, widely available, and (decently) cheap compared to other widely used v6's on the market it kinda makes up for it, but compared to the K it's apples compared to turbo'd, 1000hp oranges.

      @Catbus-Driver 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBradszone I worded my original comment a bit poorly. I was more so meaning as a direct swap into a miata chassis. The J has more potential, but you need to buy a pretty expensive ecu to get access to that power. My friends J32 swapped NB made just over 230whp on a dyno using a stock Honda ecu. Same day, same dyno, a freshly swapped K24 NA made just a few less on a cheap Ktuner base tune, obviously not nearly as much torque tho lol.
      If there was an affordable ecu option for the J that allowed tuning, I think it would be a lot more close in terms of what swap is better. You laid it out perfectly tho, the J is a monster and I really do wish it had more aftermarket support behind it.

    • @thomasrudnicki1333

      Never driven a K but weight wise this is same as miata engine taken out. Aluminum block vs iron makes a large difference. And lighter than any turbo 1.8 miata. Of course turbo K is probably similar weight and more power.

  • @obtusewalrus6111

    Bruh. It’s always just been that “plan in the works” to finally get a yata. So that I can stop hooning my 2000 Jetta tdi 5 speed like its actually got power. (It is a great car for practicing my weight transfer on, “steering with the pedals”)
    But now that I’m older, I also know I’m gonna want more power 😆. So I’ve been steadily researching which “path to power” that I want to take once I have the car, then the money.
    I had narrowed it down to a used roots/screw supercharger, a K swap , a mild 1.8 NA build (~140Hp) or some wild big swap like an LS, wankel, or some bike engine. But now I’m 95% set on the jV6 route.
    Game plan:
    obtain shitbox NA/B
    source a helical differential and an FC Rx7’s beefier differential mounting.
    Enjoy my yata as I source a totaled donor car. Gonna use the stock ECU cause I’m a cheapo, I hope it’s an accord sport at least 😂🤞. But it would be a tls engine and ecu in a perfect world.
    Then either try and fab my own swap hardware or buy that really nice pre-engineered kit. And either way just enjoy the involved labor of love, in doing what mazda should have in the first place 😁.
    Or just wuss out and get a roots supercharger, so I can just tune for a hopefully similar torque and put rods in if need be.
    Either way my goal is a fun car to drive foremost. with the amount of power the car needs to be a “real” sports car, while not trying to make the car something it wasn’t meant to be.
