The '99 Odyssey weighs about 4,200 lbs and the 2.3L FA23A7 I4 in the '98 simply didn't have enough power, so they used the J35A1 V6, which displaces 3.5L because of a longer stroke than the 3.0L J30A3 in the Accord V6 at the time. Glad I found this video because I've fantasized for a very long time about how a J35 would feel in a NA Miata. My first car out of college was a '90 Miata, the most enjoyable car I've ever had, but it did lack a bit on the power and aural department. My brother in law had a MX-3 with the sweet -sounding K8 1.8 V-6, even though that had 135hp I thought it would go great in the Miata, or the KL from the MX-6, but Mazda never bought that idea. Fast forward to present day, my garage queen is a BMW F32, but my daily driver is a 2013 Odyssey and my wife has an Acura MDX, both with the J35. I've imagined what that V6 growl would sound and feel like in a Miata. Makes me want to buy a sort-of-decent Miata right now and source a J35. (The one in this video sound kind of subdued, the exhaust is not making it justice.)
J series engines are underrated, I have a 3.2 in my Acura TL 6spdc and it’s so well balanced, between being a k series screamer to being an old LS torque
I bought my Miata for an LS swap. I fell in love with the turbo 1.6 I made of it so I swapped in a better 1.8VVT with a turbo. My end goals though are still a big turbo 13b to keep it in the Mazda family.
Wanted to do this with a 240 when you first started the channel and throw a spoolie boi on it. But then 240's got expensive and I had no idea how to make a kit to fit the 240 transmission. Now I just want to do this to a cd7 Accord but I already have a e36. Bad ass swap. Been watching your channel since you had the vert Mustang. You've come such a far way. Good job David 👍 lol
Not a hugh fan of the NA or B but my favorite swap would be a balance of power, drivability, reliability, access to parts/tuning, cost, vehicle dynamics and overall integration of the finished project. Blowers and turbos are fine for some but I was never one for simply chasing HP or red line numbers, same with the LS and Coyote, more than I need or want to spend to have fun. the Ford/Mazda 2.5 swap is at the top of the list with the Odyssey V6 close behind, both fit the character I'd want from the build.
I love this. I have an Odyssey. And the engine in it is a beast. Its not v8 or anything like my mustang, but I'll take plenty of cars driving it with the fam. It has some go!
Because the stock BP 1.8 engine had a heavy iron block and was fairly wide with the intake and exhaust manifolds, almost any aluminum engine I4 to V8 can be put in without causing much change in the car's weight distribution. Some people are doing LFX GM V-6 swaps, and a common NC swap is to go from the stock 2.0L to the 2.5L I4 Ecotec used in a bunch of Ford cars, since those engine are pretty cheap.
I've been looking into Miata for a project, and I like the idea of a V-6. American V-8 in a tiny roadster has been a winning formula ever since the Sunbeam Tiger, but I think it's a raw idea that usually ends up being a bit vulgar. Everybody who owns one wants everybody else to know they've got a V-8 under the hood. The V-6 brings a bucket or two of power and torque to the party with a bit more finesse IMHO. I've owned a few Duratec 25 cars and swapped in the Duratec 30 and LOVE the sound those produce. My first choice would be the Rocketeer swap. Having worked with those engines I have a few ideas about how to make it uniquely mine. Perhaps not as refined as choice 2, but it has timing chains rather than a timing belt so it'll run forever with little worry. Second choice the Honda JV-6 swap. Maybe a 3.5 from a minivan just for the quirky-ness of that option, not to mention it might squeeze out a few extra beans. Timing belt setup makes it a smoother, more comfortable choice.
j35 here its perfect. literally so balanced for the car and fairly inexpensive. pls stop the K swaaps.... j>k always ask bishimioto I was full set on LS. but ive always had some honda love. and I was lucky to get some seat time in a LS NA miata.. its not a miata anymore.. period. these js put out similiar to the LS before any boost too.. you cant do much to them n.a but a little bit of nitrous or low boost turbo would be nice and might not demolish that mazda drive train. glad he brought up the oil pan. I went through two of the v2 oil pans. the V3 plus a solid steel skid plate ... 0 problems. you can also raise them.. still havent figured out a good coilover set that goest up to stock or higher height.... but would be bloody nice... my buddy told me if you call up TEIN they can give you cusotm longer bottoms to for most setups.. but good luck getting any customer service.. he clearly had more connections than I did Because I couldnt even get basic info from TEIN USA.....
J series are awesome engines. It's not the first thing that might come to mind for a Miata swap, but it does make sense, it does look fun, and it definitely is worthy, unlike some mentioned above.
I'd love to put a volvo inline 5 into a miata, the sound and feeling from those motors would bring a whole new feel to that tiny car. My old volvo had a 2.5 inline 5 turbo and it could get that wagon moving no problem lol I did the speedlimit delete and got 140 out of it stock
I have a NA Miata with a 302 Ford and a T-5. Fun, but not as rocketship fast as I expected. It will slide sideways all day though. If I were to do another one, I think the 3.6 GM V6/6 speed combo out of a late Camaro would be a lot of fun. 335 HP and a 7000 rpm redline.
Yayer!!!!! Its so awsome because of the MAZDA/FORD partnership, and the absolute work of art that is the YAMAHA developed heads/Intake manifolds. They are symmetrical to so you can just flip the Intake towards the front of the vehicle.
Id do a rotary swap, no question about it. With Mazda making the rotary cars to begin with I'm surprised they never made a special edition Miata that came with a rotary. I've seen a rotary swapped Miata on 1320 or that racing channel or something like that on TH-cam it was pretty insane. David, if you ever find someone with a rotary Miata, please review it!
A 3.0-3.5 v6 honestly feels like its perfect sized engine for the car. Since its usually a shorter engine, the weight balance wont be that much off, if at all. But if your sticking to a 4cylinder, its much more cost effective to just build the BP's engine instead. At the end of the build, you'll have something more robust and reliable than any K series or ecotec swap and on top of it, if you decide to boost it, you'll put out V8 power numbers at near 4cylinder weight.
I really do love a J series engine and loved the one in my Saturn Vue, but if I had a Miata with a blown motor, I'm doing a GM LFX V6 swap. They make great power, they were available in a ton of different cars so they're cheap, reasonably reliable, and they scream. My dad had a 2016 CTS with one of those motors and it revved quickly to nearly 7k all day making about 330hp. More than enough power, and not to much down low torque kind a LS that's just going to spin the tires all day.

The 2gr-fe is a transverse engine and the awd is like Audi-VW style. But bro, I wish there was a way, the 2gr is the best NA v6 of the past 20 years
@@twinturbocars I am so dumb I forgot about that too... I wish man..
Tbh if I had a Miata with no engine I’ll keep it a 4 cylinder but I’m putting a B48 engine from a BMW M15i these motors love to make power and are very strong (technically the B58 younger brother) closed deck, high flowing heads, turbo charged from factory, etc it’s a very good 4 cylinder engine in general
A VW 1.9tdi from a MK4 car withe the Getrag rear end swap.
Once my Mazdaspeed Miata turbo 1.8 blows I'd love to put in the 2.0T from the base Camaro/ Cadillac ATS
If I had a NB Miata, I'd love to throw a Volvo redblock into it... or their glorious 5 cylinder :)
Check out stav tech youtube channel...hes building an NA mx5 with a kinda hybrid volvo redblock/penta engine...
They need to supercharge it now, and i would do an ls
The Honda Oddyssey never used a J32. It's always had a J35 engine since 1999. The first gen Oddyssey only had a 4 cylinder.
I'll throw you a curveball, LGX V6 from the 6th-gen Camaro.
Common miata swap
I love how those honda 3.5 vtecs sound. Can't wait to get my hands on one those engines so I can throw it into what ever I feel like throwing it into
I would wanna do a vq swap just because I like the sound lol
🤢🤢
please turbocharge it
You could just have a trombone player ride with you everywhere and it would sound the same.
@@maiy8786 vq is raspy trombone
Love these babies....even find them being driven by ridiculously smiling people in NZ ! Good content
Weird swap but ok
Wow looks like you've got the ultimate car I hope I can afford to do that whenever the time comes to mine.
You're on the right track with what you did
I actually always wanted to do the swap so this was really awesome to see as I've never seen a video of it running
Awesome ! Just wondering how you cam judge turn in from like a 5 degree bend? 😄

I love this. I have an Odyssey. And the engine in it is a beast. Its not v8 or anything like my mustang, but I'll take plenty of cars driving it with the fam. It has some go!
I hear ya. My 04 odyssey has embarrassed many people.
I’d dry sump that J32... Love the sound of the J series manuals. This one? She’s a keeper.
What about J series TT in a 99-2004 Mustang I've been thinking about bc cheaper than 2JZ swap I hope lol.
6:41 That is the typical J-series intake note, why do you say that engine doesn't have its typical J series note?
Been wanting to do this swap since 2016 and never got around to it. Very under rated swap
J series is a great choice. Tons of torque and lots of potential for top end.
J series the world
Do you remember what swap kit was used? I know one swap kit deletes the engine mounts and the engine is held up with the trans bell housing
j35 here its perfect. literally so balanced for the car and fairly inexpensive. pls stop the K swaaps.... j>k always ask bishimioto
I was full set on LS. but ive always had some honda love. and I was lucky to get some seat time in a LS NA miata.. its not a miata anymore.. period. these js put out similiar to the LS before any boost too.. you cant do much to them n.a but a little bit of nitrous or low boost turbo would be nice and might not demolish that mazda drive train.
glad he brought up the oil pan.
This is literally my dream I love miatas and JSeries
The 24 valve v6 from a Ford sho! Always wanted to know how good that would pair together. Ever seen that?
Or the 3.4L V8 from the later Taurus SHO
Yayer!!!!! Its so awsome because of the MAZDA/FORD partnership, and the absolute work of art that is the YAMAHA developed heads/Intake manifolds. They are symmetrical to so you can just flip the Intake towards the front of the vehicle.
Someone needs to swap a Buick 3.8 supercharged engine into a miata. That would be a fun car
Needs the GM LF4 from the caddy ATS-V.
Finally a proper jv6 review
Just bought a j32 swapped NB today. It's nasty. Like straight wicked.
Finally! I have been wanting to see a J series swap.
How is the 5 speed holding up? The 6 is known to hold boost better. If everything is fine do you think it's because of the linear power acceleration?
Id do a rotary swap, no question about it. With Mazda making the rotary cars to begin with I'm surprised they never made a special edition Miata that came with a rotary.
I've seen a rotary swapped Miata on 1320 or that racing channel or something like that on TH-cam it was pretty insane.
David, if you ever find someone with a rotary Miata, please review it!
💯 percent wit u. On the rotor
Dope! Picking up a j32 for my 85 ranger this weekend 🤘
I think if it fit I'd be quite pleased with the smaller 1.6 ecoboost. Can be tuned to the moon, small footprint.
I feel in love with the J series engine ever since I got my 8th gen accord coupe 6mt. Just wish they had the after market support the 4cly have.
It's so weird hearing that engine with a manual in a Miata. I'm so used to hearing it in my '05 Saturn Vue Red Line, it's such a nice engine.
K-series all day, one of the best 4 cylinder ever made :D
One day I want to figure out a way to get a 24v vr6 into one of these, perfect blend of power, smoothness, and sound
my thought exactly
Congrats on the engagement
