  • @Britton_Thompson

    Here's how you fix the situation to make conference champions a requirement: Instead of playing a conference championship game at the end of the year between the two division winners, you have the 2 best teams from each individual conference play for the conference title, regardless of division. In fact, do away with divisions entirely and select the top 2 teams from each conference based on the best overall record-not just conference record-and have them battle it out at the end of the season. By using the best overall record you can factor in & reward certain variables; such as teams like Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson, and Oklahoma, who schedule premiere out of conference games every year.

      I think 16 teams would make the most sense, get rid of the conference championships and keep the other bowl games for every team not in the top 16. In my opinion, Western Michigan should be in the playoffs, any team that is undefeated at the end of the year deserves a chance, just like Boise State deserved a chance several years ago. In all likelihood, both teams would lose to a big conference powerhouse, but they deserve that chance. Football is supposed to be a objective game, they can do better at taking away the subjectivity of the NCAA championship.

    Yes, you can have a team without the conference title in the top 4. But you can't put them in and leave out the team who won the title in the same conference. That's the problem. If you want to put OSU in, ok then please also include PSU and cut either Clemson or Washington. You also lose your credibility by saying PSU fans are living in the moment while at the same time you believe a 3 loss USC is a top 4 team in the country. That's a typical double standard.

      ***** yeah, it hurts their resume but most people ignore the fact that more than half of the Penn State defensive squad were bench players during the first 5 games of the season because of injuries. And that's why we saw 2 bad losses from them in the early season. By the way Pitt is not scrub, they beat Clemson on the road.

    • @AlphaDwg
      @AlphaDwg 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      conference championship is not a requirement. being one of the 4 best teams is. how do we determine who the best teams are? We look at what they did in totality on the field. Penn State's conference championship matters. But its not the only thing that matters. Those two losses matter too. Because of that simply winning the Big 10 was not enough to get into playoff. Just like for Oklahoma simply winning the big 12 was not enough. You can argue that conference champions should have automatic bid but that isn't what this system is. And I would argue that automatic bids would be foolish in college football. But for this current system Winning a conference championship is important but more important is winning your games especially if those games are against quality oppoenents. That's what Ohio st did and what Penn st didn't. now penn stat vs washington was the real debate.

    • @haoli4437
      @haoli4437 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AlphaDwg The current system is wrong, that's what I'm arguing about. Since when does winning games become larger than championships? I heard people said Warrior's 73-9 season means nothing when they lost to the Cavs. I heard people said Patriots's 16-0 season means nothing when they lost the super bowl to the Giants. Titles > regular season wins. That's why I think putting OSU in but leaving PSU out makes no sense. I never said you have to win a conference champ to be in the playoff. You can put OSU in but please also put the PSU in at the same time. By the way, I think CFP should be 5 power 5 champs+3 wildcards.

  • @Philliefan7032
    @Philliefan7032 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a Penn State fan, Im sorry that some are arguing about the results because frankly they were the right choice, However, I dont believe that the complaints of a minority of fans are going to have any impact on next years results. If Franklin or the AD had complained about the results I can understand your point, however I think that Penn State handled the results appropriately by happily accepting the rose bowl. Sure, there are bad apples in any fan base, but they are irrevelevent.

    @BrettBoi4117 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The only issue I have with Penn State not being in is that Ohio States only Loss...was to the Team that won the Big 10. I would put a 10-2 conf champ over a 11-1 team that doesnt play in their champ game on top of losing to that 10-2 team. But the committee doesn't share my values. Its not because they are Conf Champs, it's that they also beat the 11-1 team who goes instead of them.

    • @Fish4Man61
      @Fish4Man61 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But head to heads are a bad metric as well; short of very close calls (which the rest of which had tOSU ahead by a good bit). Why? Because what happens when A beats B which beats C which beat A? Same thing happened this year too. Ohio State beat Michigan which beat Penn State which beat Ohio State. Thus, the head to head holds much less significance when you think about that for a little bit. And as for the whole body of work, what about the conference championship? They are still a whole other big win down from Ohio State (which had 4) - had an uglier loss. Coupled with another loss extra. Doesn't that also outweigh the conference title? I think it does.
      So you can easily, and this is probably what the committee did in deliberations, break down those two reasons to put in Penn State, and turn them right around. Nothing is in a vacuum. None of those two things (head to head, title) should be automatic qualifiers that literally have the power to be everything in their own right, barring everything else. If Penn State lost another OOC game, like Pitt, they would also have the head to head win over tOSU, and still would have had the title game. But are you saying based SOLELY on the metrics you gave, that a 10-3 team, Penn State, who won the B1G, and beat tOSU who is 11-1 into the playoff (who had better wins and a better loss)? That is just an amplified version of why tOSU was justified to get in this year.

    If these conferences are going to have championship games, they need to get rid of divisions. You play 8-9 conference games, so if you're in the Pac-12 or even the 14-team SEC or Big Ten, you're not going to play like two or three teams in the other division, so you can take advantage of that like Alabama does (cough, Kentucky and Tennessee). Set up the two best records or common schedule records and have them play.

    • @inlinechris
      @inlinechris 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      njyankeesfan Tennessee is permanent cross division opponent of Alabama while the other cross division game is rotated every year. We don't play Kentucky every year. UGA last year. Florida the year before.

      Tennessee and bama are protected rivals so are guaranteed a game against each other each year. USC is not in the SEC. And i see what u mean but there are other teams in the sec west and in order for their schedules to work they end up not playing the best teams sometimes

      Cody Wirth so why not go with an 8 team playoff? that'd be 5 extra games instead of 1. I thought the point of the playoff was to get rid of the committee making silly judgement calls. give it 8 teams, power 5 conference winners get automatic bids, then the committee picks 3 teams from the non-conference-winners. it's still the only playoff in any sport without objective parameters, still the worst.

    Sorry PSU fans, the B1G ignores non conference games but the playoff committee doesn't. Nor should they. Sure, you had injuries. And OSU played back to back night roads games at UW and at PSU, and both teams had a bye week the week before facing a young OSU team. And let's be real, PSU was very fortunate to beat OSU. Whether you call it a fluke or no, it's certainly not a 39 point beat down.

If H2H matters so much, PSU has no justification for being ahead of Michigan. PSU had TWO metrics in their favor, as compared to Ohio State, and about 12 against them. Their resumes weren't close. at least the committee has been consistent in their assessment of resumes in the entire, huge 3 year history of the CFP.

    The entire reason for having playoffs (and conference championship games) is to settle the score on the field and to keep opinions to the minimum. Colin, in your world, the NFL should just bypass the playoffs and put New England and Dallas in the Super Bowl. Penn State should be in, period.

    I don't think this was a good point but the selection seems about right. Conference championships seem to be hit or miss and that should change, every other year its a make or break thing and then this happens where its pretty irrelevant that a team tops the conference, also seems super biased bc if this was bama then they would've been in no questions asked

  • @ruckus1713
    @ruckus1713 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only thing that bothers me is how similar this is to how OSU got in the playoffs in 2014. Don't get me wrong they absolutely humiliated Wisconsin in the conference championship game, but it was a team that was thought to never be able to beat Alabama who beat one ranked opponent during the season but got in because they had the conference championship. Also think the 2 teams playing MSU consecutive weeks with very different results should've played a huge role, but I get that OSU has the better shot at Alabama

    • @brantvistain3261
      @brantvistain3261 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's so obvious that the committee and the media wants a rematch between their 2 golden boys, Saban and Meyer. I don't think we'll see that, though. OSU's offense has been hot garbage lately and MSU and Michigan have showed us that if you contain the zone read and cover Samuel that they can't really do anything. I don't think they'll be able to outscore Clemson. I also wouldn't be surprised if Washington keeps it close with Bama.

    How many times do I have to say that the conference championship should be determined by the overall win/loss rather than conference. Eliminate West/East and have the best overall record face off. That would be coherent with the metrics the CFP uses. If Michigan had won against Iowa, it would have been a three-way tie. Then Ohio State would have been in the championship. Eliminate West/East and the two best teams with the best overall records would have faced off. Makes sense, right?

      @joshuatalley7834 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they beat OhioState but the community saw the uncalled PI at the end and used that to make the decision. OhioState really should've won that game, but the refs missing that call played a huge part in PennState winning.

    • @LuckyLefty92
      @LuckyLefty92 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All that pass interference call would have done is move Ohio state 15 yards down field. Don't omit the fact that Penn State still sacked JT Barret to end the game AFTER that. Penn State scored a blocked fg but, their defense went out there and finished the game.

      That game was setting up to be another Urban Meyer Ohio State win early in the 4th quarter. U could feel the fans start to exit, I feel that the committee thinks just because Ohio State didnt finish Penn State doesn't mean Penn State is better and Penn State didn't flat out win the division they won on a tiebreaker because of Ohio State

  • @stretch141000
    @stretch141000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree with the comments made in this video in that conference championships don't mean much. Colin says the four best teams overall should get in regardless of championships etc. I just really want to know why people don't think penn state is one of the four best teams in college football RIGHT NOW. They have the longest win streak in the power 5 besides alabama which included ohio state. I understand that they lost two bad games early but they had every starting linebacker hurt and as well as a hurt defensive line, there were so many backups playing, sort of the same story with the pitt game. Michigan lost two of their last three so theres a very good case to be made that penn state is the better team RIGHT NOW, that game was like 10 weeks ago or so. It is literally the same case that Colin is making with usc, they started off bad but they got hot. usc lost by 46 to bama and 17 to stanford, and to be honest those sound as bad as losing to michigan by 39 and pitt (who is ranked now) by 3. The problem is the whole conference championship thing, but in a different way. People are dismissing penn state because the only thing we complain about is that we should get in because we won the big ten. I understand that it doesn't mean anything when judging every team in the country. But people are failing to realize that after that loss to michigan, penn state has actually been playing like a powerhouse top 4 college football team, we have taken care of business in a convincing manner. I would go as far to say that RECENTLY, we have been better than washington and clemson.

    • @stretch141000
      @stretch141000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the way, i really hope people don't actually look at what vegas thinks. Penn state is not only on a 9 game winning streak, they are 8-0-1 against the spread in those games which should never happen. How long will it take for oddsmakers and people in general to realize that penn state is a phenomenal team now?

    As a Penn State fan, I'm glad we're out of the playoffs to play USC in the Rose Bowl.
    1. We avoid running directly into the brick wall that is Alabama this year and being relegated to an also ran. Not saying we would have no chance at all, just let's be realistic about our chances.
    2. If Alabama stomps on Washington, we can argue we would have been a better match-up.
    3. If Ohio State loses to Clemson badly, same argument.
    4. If Ohio State wins out against Clemson, Tide/Washington we'll be the only team that beat the National Champions in 2016.
    Every CFP outcome either boosts our resume for next year or is irrelevant (Washington or Clemson wins). We're returning most guys on both sides of the ball for 2017. The only thing that could ding the resume at this point is a poor performance in our bowl game. As coach Franklin says, USC! USC! USC! USC USC! USC! USC! USC! That's all we need to worry about. How much better would it be to see 11-1 Ohio State vs 12-0 Michigan in a conference title game other than 12-0 Michigan vs 8-4 Nebraska it would make it more meaningful and fun to watch💯💯

    I like Colin but the way he DOGS on Nebraska and the other side of the Big 10 is completely absurd to me. In this video he states multiple times that Big 10 alignment is such a joke because Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State are the best 4 programs and everyone on the other side is a joke compared to them. Ok, from 2005 to 2015, Wisconsin had 98 wins which is 9th in the country. That program can't shake a candle to the teams on the other side? Nebraska is a joke compared to Michigan State and Penn State? In that same time-frame, Penn State 89 wins, Nebraska 88 wins, Michigan State 84 wins. It doesn't make any sense for Colin to have that opinion when you look at the actual data instead of just ranting.

    Hey Washington made it in with the worst out of conference schedule ever. It just goes to show if Penn State would have played Portland State instead of Pitt, we'd be in.
    It's crazy that we beat a conference champion, won our own division (the toughest in the nation), then won our conference (best in the nation) and we didn't make it. We beat two top 10 teams, and 2 other top 25 teams. Our loss to Pitt looks better since they also beat Clemson ON THE ROAD, and our loss to Michigan should be somewhat nullified since we had our 7th team linebackers in.
    Ohio State's resume is impressive no lie, but they also lost to Penn State.
    Clemson almost lost numerous times and I believe will get annihilated in the first round.
    Washington had such an easy schedule. Beat a couple of "ok" teams in Utah and WSU, beat Stanford, and beat a hurt Colorado team. None of those teams are on OSU or even Wisconsin's level.
