    This play may seem screwed up, but back then, fumble recoveries were spotted with momentum, not the spot of possession, which would've given the Raiders the ball outside the goal line. They modified that rule the next year.

    3:45 Okay, people say the Orlovsky & Garoppolo play of running out of the end zone is the most embarrassing safety possible, but this one is far worse. Actually setting up ON THE END LINE and STEPPING BACK when receiving the ball directly from the snap has got to be absolutely ridiculous. You had the *whole time* to set up even a few inches ahead to prevent this. And he didn't do ANYTHING to prevent it...

    This video didn’t include one of the more interesting safeties in my opinion. In Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers led by 6 late with the ball on their own 1. Roethlisberger completed a pass out to the 20 which would’ve forced the Cardinals at least to use all their remaining timeouts and therefore allowed Pittsburgh to run out the clock if they got another first down. But there was an offensive holding penalty called on the pass, and because the hold occurred in the end zone the Cardinals by rule scored a safety. Rare you see an offensive penalty in the end zone other than intentional grounding cause a safety

    • @kpenpen
      @kpenpen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was before momentum rule I guess. (Edit: during that year momentum rule did not work the same as it did now. A fumble recovered in the field of play and brought back into the end zone had to be brought out regardless of momentum to avoid a safety) Raiders recovered the fumble on the 3 and was not touched down until they slid into the end zone. By rule the raiders were the ones that brought the football back into their end zone, so it is a safety.
      Nowadays momentum rule would result in the raiders getting 1 & 10 at the 3.
