Hi Max, I'm new to owning a 2009 GW. Not new to motorcycles. My question is why does it seem that noone talks about setting rider sag on their gw and getting the appropriate setting (as close as possible anyways) when adjusting the preload adjuster? I learned on previous bikes how to do it properly with measurements but it seems that many gw owners don't understand what they are actually trying to adjust the preload for.
@@krispy1k While sag is almost a "required" thing to do with a sport bike, on the Wing there isn't much you can do to set sag. The spring on the bike is too soft to ever get the bike into an appropriate range. Changing the spring is a massive undertaking, and most owners aren't into it and don't know enough to realize that they should change it, so they buy shiny things instead. The Wing is asked to do the impossible: Be good for a solo ride on the weekend with no luggage, and then with just a push of a button somehow be able to carry a double the rider weight and 100 pounds of luggage, and frequently a trailer all on the same spring. It's just not possible for it to be right always. So we shoot for "The best it can be". Past that, finding enough people to be around to try and balance, lift and settle a 1000 pound beast and measure correctly isn't likely to happen either. Most people just adjust the preload setting to what feels good to them, and leave it forever.
Thank you guys so much for making these videos. Much appreciated. Nothing in the service manual about the Preload mechanism and none of the local shops wanted to touch it, I sent one dealership your video and they said it looks easy and we can do that for you, but I just ended up doing it myself. Installed your stainless line of course.
Thanks for the video and the the spring compression tool. Just made the job real easy. Other than the hours of disassembly. I now have it running with a new progressive spring and braided hose, the motor is under load from 0 and up so no air in the sytem. Will be great to have ground clearance, with a sidecar fitted it needed a heavier spring anyway.
Hi Max. Do you have you a vid on how to service the reservoir/pump with the shock in situ in order to remove the airlock lag? I've seen a couple of tutorials which describe removing the reservoir/pump assembly, disconnecting the hydraulic hose ensuring that the banjo is held higher than the shock to avoid fluid lose and air ingestion, but your videos are always the bees. Thanks. Mike from the UK
hi Max...I ride a 2006 Wing and i know my rear shock is shot...ride is terrible now...last year i had installed the progressive monotube cartridge kit which definitely made the front end better.....after viewing your website today, i discovered you have installers here in Ontario Canada where i live...they’re only 2 hours away....called them today to enquire about doing the rear shock in my bike....not sure if i’ll get it done this year but if not i’ll be doing it next spring....thx for making such impressive suspension parts and i’m looking forward to have my bike serviced with your parts !!!.....and to a much improved ride.....
Thanks to a quick call from Martin I finished mine and it works great. I did not have enough oil in the master cylinder. I think I some got the plunger in the 2 rider & luggage position when I added the hydraulic oil in the slave cylinder. Not sure why this happened I must have rotated the motor in the first step the wrong way and it is not easy to determine from the video which way Martin was spinning gear with his finger. I also wonder why you don't skip that step and just turn the plunger to the top when you open up the master cylinder? One last comment when I tested the final set up with the menu it knew what position the preload was in because it did not run when I selected the same position. Only ran when I went to a different position. I expected to see the existing position highlighted? If so instill have an issue. But happy because it works otherwise! Traxxion Dynamics Rocks especially Dan, Martin and Max!
Hi Merv, I am guessing you had it in 2person Lugggage when you took it off the bike. We always lower it to 1 person before disassembly. This puts the piston and sensor in the correct spot for the 2018+.
If you are talking about how to do this with the shock on the bike, I don't have a video for that... I have heard it can be done. We are always replacing the shock anyway, so it's easy while it's off the bike to change the line and bleed the adjuster.
Hello, i have a 2015 GL1800 and my preload adjuster is not working. The pump works if i connect it to the battery, the relays look ok, the fuses are ok, but there is no tension coming to the 2 pin plug (the one that supplies the motor). Can you please give an idea where or what to check next or how to fix it somehow? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 thanks in advance
Absolutely... the braided line will not assist in carrying weight in a way that can be detected. You need a new Traxxion Shock, it comes with the spring and braided line. If you put a stronger spring onto your already too weak shock, it's just a bad recipe, and you have to do all of the labor to change it just to have it work poorly.
Ok tks Max. And for the Front Chock we only transfer the motor with the cable to your shock to avoid false warnings from the System. But in contrary to the Rear Shock, the motor in the Front Shock has no function then. ?
@@340Captain There is not front preload adjuster. The two electronic damping adjusters, front and rear, do not cause any warnings when disconnected. We install blind plugs over the factory harness to protect it.
Do you ever grease the relay link arm needle bearings ? The FJR riders swear it needs done every 16k, when I asked the GoldWing guys they say it never needs done.
It needs to be done once for sure, and then any time the shock is out for service it just makes sense to check it and see if any of the seals have failed. If the seals don't fail, it will be fine forever. The factories don't put but a tiny dab of grease in them... it's silly.
PS the same type of guy who says you need to grease linkage bushings every 16K miles is the same type of guy who says you can't reuse a crush washer, and you need to put your air vavle caps on with a torque wrench...
IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to put your shock down to "Zero" or "1 Person No Luggage" before removing the shock.
Checked 👍

Which way was Martin spinning the gear with his finger? Clockwise is my guess but not sure either.
What type of grease do you use to lube the seal? Anything specific?
very nice instruction. Greetings from Poland ;)
Excellent work!
Did not see or missed filling the reservoir with oil. 07wing with 224,000 miles. Shock needs this fix.

No idea on that... you'll need to get a wiring diagram and go in reverse to find it.
