The problem with this one is everything is too easy for Mulan. In the original she had to work hard to prove herself and get better. And this one she has Chi and everything is pretty much easy when it comes to fighting because she has Chi. In the original tales of Mulan depending on what region you read it, she would either have a younger brother or as in this movie a younger sister. They thought the character of mushu would be too insensitive to the Chinese people watching the movie so they wrote him out. Similar reasons for the songs aside from trying to be more realistic. Fun fact the woman who introduced Mulan to the emperor was the original speaking voice of Mulan.
Besides them taking away singing (because they said it wasnt realistic but irl many countries have war songs) i also hate how they made her strong. In the original she WASNT strong she was smart and while she tried to abandoned her feminity, in the end she accepted that as a part of her and even taught her other soldiers how feminity could be used as a weapon.
she wasn't really abandoning her femininity, sure she was a bit more tomboyish (in the animated version) but she still had very feminine qualities, which she had to hide and temporarily replace with masculine to take her father's place in the army.

I really appreciate that you didn't let the fact that everyone said it was bad and to not watch it prevent you from watching it. While yes, in this case it really isn't very good, there are a lot of movies out there that the most vocal popular opinion will hate on incessantly, but for a lot of people the movies are actually really good. Ultimately, you can't know if a movie is good or not until you watch it for yourself. I just really hope this movie doesn't deter you from watching the live action Aladdin whenever that comes up. While most people didn't like it, I actually prefer it to the original, so it would really be a shame if you didn't give it a chance.
They got people hyped for this movie saying it was going to be a more realistic version of the original Mulan, which is why they got rid of Mushu. But then they added in all the Chi stuff and the witch who can transform, and I think the cartoon was more realistic then some of the things they pulled off in this film.

Isn't she the lady who specifically made a TH-cam account with the sole intention of detailing exactly how horrifically awful this film is? Just think about that for a second. The movie is such a dumpster fire of cultural fuck-ups and garbage script that it angers people enough to make an entire video about how terrible the film is.
She's amazing, I'm so glad she made that video and instantly went viral and has kept going with her other video concepts. Her work is brilliant and she's also sneakily incredibly funny with her witty wording throughout all her criticisms. Glad someone mentioned her here!
@@mokko759 hey, just to clarify something, xiran jay zhao is non-binary, so lady is probably not the best term to use. also, if you’re wondering, they’re okay with people using any pronouns casually, in reference to them.
I hate this movie, there is no character development. It wants to be a feminist movie but instead of showing how a woman can fight the same as a man, they give mulan superpowers like what? Are you telling me she needs superpowers to fight along regular men? They added a sister that makes the fact of her having to give honor to her family by marrying someone completely pointless. The relationship with his father is just not there.
We all hate on this live action for the same reason however the story wasn’t about showing how women can fight equally. Many people misunderstand this point, especially this movie . In fact she didn’t defeat the Huns with fighting, she only outsmarted them. Mulan was about honouring her family, even if that meant risking her own life.
The superpower was like nothing and the phoenix didn't do anything which why what the point of those power and creature ,LOL. Even Mushu the small dragon can do better than that LOL
Which is stupid! The original was a feminist movie. The message was that any woman can be capable. This is just...idk, weird. Mulan had special powers.

Built on the blood of Muslims and Christians (and anyone that doesn’t agree with Chinese government). Looks like we have a new cursed movie on our hands!
Me and my friend gave this movie a chance when it first came put but within the first five minutes we were laughing and making fun of it because not only were a lot of parts just plain dumb, both for filming/practicality/realizm, but other parts were just culturally wrong. I'm not even Chinese or know a ton about the culture but even I know chi doesn't equal superpowers.
My best friend who is an actual archer was furious when they saw the behind-the-back trick shot. Yes, you can do that for real. But in the middle of combat? NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT. You can only pull off that move and get a kill if you have plot armor. In reality, you would save time and effort if you just shot them normally. And also, I hated how this movie literally showed people conveniently having the reflexes to catch arrows with their bare hands. Sure it looks cool, but scientifically, you would be dead.
From a Chinese’s perspective, I believe that her family name ‘Fa’ and ‘Hua’ actually refers to the same word,so technically they didn’t change it I guess haha 👑

So we instantly stopped watching 🤣🤣🤣
So apart from whether or not the story in this movie was good, I wasn’t a big fan of the cinematography. The movie obviously had quite a budget, or at least I think so, because the shots were beautiful, but most of the time too perfect I believe. Also there was absolutely no dynamic to the shots. For example when they invade that place in the beginning, there were often only two or three people in the shot. There were no people fighting in the background and the shots weren’t dynamic at all, so there was no chaos, which takes all the speed out of a battle scene. I kept waiting for the pace to pick up, but there was almost never enough happening on screen. It took me a while to realise the reason I felt like nothing was happening was because there was no dynamic to the visuals and not enough contrast in dynamics between calm and action scenes.
This movie reminded me so much of the season 12 final in Doctor Who. It really made me annoyed and completely destroyed the original message. That isn't to say that all live actions made by disney are bad. Being an animator I enjoy what they changed- Aladin had to be my favorite- including Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. I think the only bit I liked about this movie was the fact that they added sorcery but I agree with everyone else- it isn't good.
Right! In 1998, it established the father actually having a relationship with Mulan, it showed the mother being scared and the father comforting her in the scene right before Mulan makes her decision to leave! There were scenes all over sprinkled with the family being a family! You could actually feel a relationship among them!
personally i dont hate but i also dont love it. I do wish it would be more historically accurate and had at least the mushu in it. The OG movie aka the animation focuses on her earning her chi while her stay at the camp site they were at. she earns her chi after training long hours. I honestly don't know why they decided to have her already with a powerful chi but it is what it is considering the directors of the live adaption was mainly white people. I wish it was more historically accurate especially when it came to the wardrobe. it looks like the Hanfu she was wearing when going to the match maker was from all different types of dynasty and I recall a bit of tang ang qing dynasty mixed into one. however they did get the markings on her face right. I don't remember what they were called but at least those were historically accurate. however for the clothing it threw me off a bit because mulan isnt from the tang or qing dynasties at all. shes from a completely different time period. Also im not chinese but i do love chinese culture as i grew up in a predomielty asian neighborhood ( maily chnese people but there were other types of Asian and SE Asians). Mulan is supposed to inspire young girls and young teens that you don't have to be man to do certain things but with this adaption of mulan and giving her a powerful Chi from the beginning take's away the whole purpose of the movie being a feminist movie and it makes it look like you already have to be a strong female to do what men do annd that is not the case at all because even strong men were once WEAK when they started off.

I never understood why she tried hiding her chi when she first joined the army. She couldn't use it before because she's a girl, but now she's pretending to be a guy and so should be able to freely use it without repercussions. Chi is supposed to be for warriors or whatever and she's a warrior. What was the issue? Was she just trying to fly under the radar? (And yes, there are a lot of issues with there even being chi in the first place in the way that they used it in this movie, but they should at least stick to their own in-universe rules, you know?)
I feel like the worst thing about this movie is that Mulan is way too confident compared to her animated version. Animated Mulan was scared and weak, she could get killed any second, but she used her intelligence to her advantage. Meanwhile, live action Mulan is confident from the start and her chi allows her to do everything the men can do and better. It's so hard to relate to live action Mulan, which makes her feel unrealistic. She's a Mary Sue while animated Mulan feels fleshed out. This movie is such a disappointment,,
This movie has no right to be a "remake" of the original Disney movie. She has zero personality other than, "the girl with special powers that make her better than everyone else just because". I haven't seen it, and never will. I've seen plenty from other's reviews and the trailers, I'm never watching this crap movie

Exactly! And I feel like a main part of the movie is that even the everyday woman can be powerful. By them giving Mulan powers it takes away from this

well i LOVE this movie
Paint the tape black and call it a day 🤣🤷🏽♂️
could you watch White Snake! It is a great girl movie
This movie is such a disappointment,,
The way the match maker delivers lines makes me upset
This movie has no right to be a "remake" of the original Disney movie. She has zero personality other than, "the girl with special powers that make her better than everyone else just because". I haven't seen it, and never will. I've seen plenty from other's reviews and the trailers, I'm never watching this crap movie
