Stihl ms660 vs. ms461 - Stockers

  • Both of these saws are bone stock, period.
    Oregon LW (33" when measured like a 32"er ) 110 driver 3/8 bar.
    Somewhere around 3900' in the sky - so the air is starting to get thin.
    As stated, the Stihl corporation stated for years the 660 had the best power to weight ratio of any production - 7.0 hp if memory serves. Claimed weight on the 3/4 wrap version was 16.8lbs.
    The printed literature on the 461 states it has 6.0 hp. Claimed weight on the R saw is 15.72lbs.
    Starting ~ the 1/4 mark in the 34th second on the 660 and ending ~ 1/2 way through the 2nd second in the 3rd minute nets 28.25 seconds. The 461 hit wood at the end of the 58th second and ended about 1/2 of the way through the 31st in the 8th minute. From my observation, the 461 was right around 32.5/6 seconds. The 660 easily handles the 461 by 4 seconds as we see here. There is no replacement for displacement except a good zippkit - as we have see in some of the previous videos where a nicely modded 461 mops up on this 660.
    I'm currently available for custom saw modifications. Please shoot me an email if you are interested.

    Yeppers ... kinda shows a guy what’s what once the big-boy bars are on both saws ... also demonstrates what a zipped 461 can do (previous video) - if anyone doubts the juice produced , the tape don’t lie !

    Jack I noticed you having the same interesting experiences as myself with the husky/Oregon sometimes playing its tricks on not immediately relaying a true tension. And then having to adjust again or maybe multiple times after rolling the chain around because it's too tight. And that's with new bars sometimes and sometimes not. I like Oregon chain, Carlton and Stihl but dang the Oregon can be fussy at times. Hope all is well friend!!! Hello from eastern wa

      Eric hi. I think you will find the chain will get a fuzz more tight after the bar nuts are cinched down. I have found that all saws act pretty much the same way in that regard. Sometimes, I will get it (another one of those fuzz things) a bit to tight initially. Then, well, you know the drill.....

      Finom 1 hi.
      Because I cannot remember....
      If it is orange, then it's one I picked up in the mid/late 90s on the North Oregon coast. If it is black then it's one of the old 181 - 2101s originals from in the 80s.
      Probably cannot buy the orange one any more and the Husky version has been nla for years.
      The standard Stihl orange one works well also and you can pick those up at a shop.
      Thanks for watching.

    3 seconds, in a big ole hunk of log, not much difference when you consider that the 660 boasts 1 more pony over the 461, and the 660 has several pounds more to drag around, I own and use both, yet the 461 gets chosen more often than any of the others, simply because of the power to weight

    • @kosycat1
      @kosycat1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah im like 130 pounds and lugging that 660 around all day would not be fun for the little power gain it gives you. most the time the little saw with the 16-inch bar cuts most stuff we do at work. just needed the 32-inch bar on it to cut an oak stump the other day, it was niceee

    How are the Oregon light weight bars vs. Stihl light weight bar .as in durability and weight

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Blain hi.
      They weigh less and are much more flexible.
      They have softer rails. As a result, they wear out quicker.

      @@fabzacres-blackcat so again even saws. After porting they are still even. 1 multiplied by 1 is still 1. A ported 660 won't be any better than a 461 unless you run a 41" bar in big timber all day. Big waste of money and unnecessary wear on your body lugging it around if you don't have to

    • @fabzacres-blackcat
      @fabzacres-blackcat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even ? I just watched the video and counted 4.5 sec difference between the 660 and 461 - Your numbers were 4 sec so close enough ... Stock 660 vs Stock 461 useing your numbers is 14% quicker ; my numbers moreso ... That’s with a 32” bar ! Longer bar the margin of victory for the 660 wood be more pronounced !

    • @ianmartin7283
      @ianmartin7283 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fabzacres-blackcat you can't count tenths of a second on TH-cam. Also 4 seconds is not a big enough gain to justify the extra weight and fuel consumption. Testing a stock 461 with 32 vs 36 there was a 1 second difference so moving up to a 36 from a 33 would still only be 5 second difference. And as I said previously the 461 doesn't lose rpms like the 660 when the air filter starts to plug. All the 660s I've ran I had to bang out the filter 3 times a day in the winter with short hours whereas I clean my 461 once a month. The 461 has many more advantages than a 660 no matter what anyone says or shows

    • @fabzacres-blackcat
      @fabzacres-blackcat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ian martin both saws were bone stock and ran the same bar and chain ... clearly the 660 was (by your numbers 4sec) at least 14% quicker ... When ported the 660 will come alive ! in stock form it’s bmep is low for its displacement as compared to the 461 ... I own / run BOTH saws and run max-flow filters on both as the stock filter system on BOTH saws is inferior to the max flow ... really don’t know how you run your 461 for a month without cleaning your filter ? I’d be checking for fines in the carb throat ... sawdust WILL kill a saw ! Fabz Out !
