You aren't afraid of heights and heights alone. You are scared of falling from them. Same goes for being afraid of the dark. You're not afraid of the dark itself, you are scared of what's in it.
Edit: Yes, I know you can be truly afraid of heights and the dark alone. I made this so people don’t walk around saying they have Acrophobia when being scared of FALLING from high places is not Acrophobia.

It's literally inside your brain and a reaction from your eyes to be afraid or get away from high ledges. It's biology. Climbers just get addicted to the adrenaline so get passed that.
A natural reaction to danger and not wanting to die is not having a phobia.

It might scare people when towers that are really tall kinda shake a little bit, similar to when you built a massive lego pillar as a kid and it collapsed. People probably have that same fear with real buildings

OK story time.
So one time I was at a urban air trampoline park and I really really wanted to ride the sky rider. It was a big zip line that anyone could go on unless you were shorter than 4 feet me being 4 foot two, I decided to go on it. That was a horrible mistake. After they sit at me for the straps and I got clicked on, they walked me down to the hallway where you have to jump off the 40 foot height. I tried not to look down, but the fear overwhelmed me. I looked at my parents who were watching. I turn to the guy. And I ask, “can I get off?” The guy says yes. He unstrapped me. And I got off. I ended up having to go up again and missed my turn.
