Host Kevin O’Connor and general contractor Tom Silva are about to dive into the future of woodworking. With a handheld CNC router in hand, the two work together to find a design, upload it to the router, and cut out two unbelievably accurate legs for a toddler’s step stool. Here’s how it’s done.
    Where to find it?
To prep your workspace to use a CNC hand router [homedepot.sjv....]:
To protect your worktable clamp [homedepot.sjv....] a spare piece of plywood [homedepot.sjv....] down to the table. Use double sided stick tape [homedepot.sjv....] on the plywood to secure the material you’re cutting to it. This will prevent the board from moving while using the router.
To prepare the router for a new project, add a special locator tape [bit.ly/3POzglr] that allows the router to locate itself on any workpiece. Scan the workpiece to create a grid that the router will follow.
To keep your workspace clean connect the router to a HEPA vac [homedepot.sjv....] for minimal dust transfer.
Baltic birch plywood [homedepot.sjv.io/DyQooo] was used for this project.
Chamfer bit [homedepot.sjv....] for router to round the edges.
Cut the treads on the miter saw [homedepot.sjv....].
Wood glue [homedepot.sjv....] to join pieces together and screws [homedepot.sjv....] to secure them in place.

My dad made me a little stool when I was young. At 66 it has travelled with me through life and I use it almost every day. Such a treasure.

The Shaper Origin is a fabulous tool. That said it is about as expensive 3.5k as a good entry CNC machine but it is much more useful for making furniture joints with the table accessory .

For beginners’ sake and for those who, shall we say, might have other plans for our big piles of money, it could have been nice to include at least a discussion of alternate approaches to achieve the result without the special router. However, I’m sure they know there is plenty of this content out there, maybe this segment is sponsored content, and, incidentally, this is one of the best overviews of this tool that I have seen.

Wow, clicked the video excited about a practical build for a first time dad (me). What a disappointment. Why not show something that would actually apply to your average viewer, not some absurd router that . 00001 percent of viewers will ever put hands on. Or at the very least, show us the modern version but then have Tommy walkthrough how to build it for people who own normal tools

I can’t believe that they would make something like that. That would make it so hard for someone that’s not a computer person. it’s kind of sad that this country will be nothing but making where nobody can make a living. I just found out few weeks ago when you buy a new vehicle you want be able to replace you car battery when it dies. Now the battery has to be program to the car in order for it to it will need to be at the dealer. That’s so wrong to do this in this country. Good job.
