    Any new reel is great. After maybe a handful of time u use it. Then you’ll see, the bearings wear out. They don’t last for more than a few months

    • @McFlyAngler

      These ones lasted a while, it was fine. However the company did start to loose some quality control over the past few years. So I don’t work with them anymore.

    Those do look Ike cut-bows, beautiful fish. Good on you for doing a great job surveying the water and finding a hot spot. You could have stayed at the main lake and got skunked but you did take your time and found fish with a bit of effort. Well done.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Big Papi thanks man... so you think they are cutbows? Good to know.

    • @bigpapi3636
      @bigpapi3636 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler Possible but not definitive from the videos. Cutbows usually a more brown or olive back but rainbows can have this coloration as well. Best way to tell is rainbows have white on tips of pectoral, caudal and anal fins and no prominent red slash under the jaw like a cutthroat. Also black spots on rainbows and Cutbows are uniformly distributed while cutthroat spots are more prominent toward the tail end. Cutbows also have a less definitive red stripe along the lateral line vs rainbows, almost pink. Cutbows are particularly handsome fish.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, its possible they were, but I kept them all in the net, and didn't handle them enough to see exactly what they were. I just was happy to catch them and release them healthy. The guide I saw on the river that day was calling them rainbow (that wasn't in the video because he asked me not to put him in). He said "the sterile stocker rainbow were going up the inlets trying to find a place to spawn, even though they couldnt actually reproduce". But, he could have been just calling them rainbow and really they were cut bow. Honestly I'm not too sure.

      I hooked a few fish, but for some reason they were all Houdini's. Magic little fish which jumped off the hook. HAHA IT was beautiful though for sure! I was in a snow storm though the entire day, so it definitely made it difficult.

    I been watching your videos for a while and its been cool to see you improve as much as you have. I like that net.. I have a hell of a time netting fish lately.. Every time i get one close to the net its been swimming between my legs.. Guess I shouldn't be up to my stomach in the river eh.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      HAHA Well, I am not going to say this net will be needed to net fish, but I will say its a really good net and improved my netting ratio. Its expensive for sure, but really for a hand made net at this level of craftsmanship, $150 isn't really all that bad.
      Yeah, I have been fly fishing for a while before the video's, and conventional fishing for a very very long time. However, I am relatively new to trout, which is much different. I fished a lot in the gulf for reds, and on lakes for bass. Its a completely different game down there. Takes a while to figure the trout thing out I will say, much longer than I thought it would. Don't get me wrong, site fishing for reds is difficult, and casting large flies into the wind can be difficult (probably why I have a funky looking cast for trout fishing) but it is a bit different, and trout can be (not always) more difficult to learn than red fishing.

    Do you know if those where rainbows or cuttbows? They liked a lot like cuttbows, and took something that was not pellet food, unlike stocked rainbows. But, they might be rainbows.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it could totally be cuttbows, one of them looked like it could have been, but I think they were just straight rainbow... They might be stocked, however I don't think they stock them that size, so the ones that survive to this big take other baits over time, knowing they have to find food other than pellet, or they will die of starvation over time. I know there are some cutthroat in that lake, and also some really nice browns. But a guide for the lake (I met that day) was calling them rainbow as well.

    • @flyfishingmaniac6802
      @flyfishingmaniac6802 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome. Thanks for the information. I don't like fishing for rainbows, but if they were cuttbow, I would want to chase them down. Thanks!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rainbow aren't the most exciting fish to fish for, I agree, but a fish is a fish. I personally like catching fish, whether its a rainbow, cutthroat, brown trout, bass, pike, carp, tuna, redfish, sea trout, striped bass, bluegill crappie, etc... I have caught about 80% of the game fish in north america (saltwater and freshwater). There hasnt been a single species that didnt make me get happy inside, like a 5 year old on christmas morning! HAHA

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, its not always like this either. Only a week or so out of the year when the trout are spawning. I got lucky on this trip. But other than this specific spawn run, you might not have luck in that lake.
      Yeah man, I totally get it. I was out in Colorado Springs which is about 6.5 hours from me a few weeks ago, and I had to leave my house at like 1am to make it there in the early morning. HAHA

  • @jdub8116
    @jdub8116 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I fish this lake and know it well. Those Rainbows are stacked up at the river inlet staging for their spawn. I know June/early-July seems late in the season to spawn, but that's when it happens in the higher altitude lakes. Wonder why those bellies were so thick? Because they're filled with eggs! Keep this in mind next time you're up there. Give them some space to do their thing and we'll all continue to be rewarded

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +J DUB yes, I figured they were spawning, that's why I only hooked 3... also, the guide I talked to that is one of the only ones licensed for that lake said they are stocked rainbow, and therefor sterile. They cannot breed. Whether he is right nor not, I don't know. But he is the professional right? Figure he knew more than me. Don't worry, I didn't harm any of your fish. Lol.

    • @jdub8116
      @jdub8116 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, hope I didn't come off like a dick. That wasn't my intention. And they're not my fish, they're everybody's fish... I'd beg to differ those fish are sterile, but like you said, he's the professional. Why jeopardize that reproduction, though? A couple extra views? A few more likes? That's a high price for potentially less fish. Point being, it's bad juju to target spawning fish... Keep up the good work! Great vids.

    • @canton1124
      @canton1124 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are rainbows, cuts, and cut bows all spawning together in the lake and its tributaries during the spring/early summer. Unfortunately I would imagine this hybridization is a main factor in keeping Electra’s rainbow/cutthroat spawns sterile and reproduction at a minimum.

      @aimed5831 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler www.glacierwear.com/fisher-pelt-for-sale.html this pelt. it has fine furs that i thought would go well for fly tieing

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im really not sure much about that animal still. Or what the fur is like. Is it short or long hairs? Is it soft or stiff fiber? There has to be something you could tie with it, but without knowing the properties of the fur, I couldnt say what its good for.

    • @aimed5831
      @aimed5831 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler it has short fibers thats stick out like needles but arent stiff. and closer to the base of it are smaller greyish brown fibers like dubbing. the tail however has long fine fibers . mabey ill send you a picture. What way could i send it?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Aika Fuwa the longer fibers in the tail might do good for some streamers, and the shorter fibers (depending how short) could be used for some nymphs... but again, just a picture and some info might not be enough for me to judge what it can or cannot be used for. I would really have to hold the thing in my hand and see how all the properties are of the fur. Generally though, longer fibers are good for streamers...

    You probably could have caught dozens of trout that day. But when it's that easy, I know personally it feels kind of unsporting and a little cruel to sit there and just pound them all day. I usually will catch a few and move a little if they're stacked, but I doubt i've ever seen so many like that in one small area. I appreciate, as a fellow angler, that you're the kind of person who can show some restraint. Especially in a place like that, where there's not much pressure on those fish, and you don't have to worry that if you don't fish them, you may never get another chance.
    Here in PA it's hard to pass up any good fishing because within a few weeks, the fish will be killed by people who don't know how to handle trout and people throwing huge treble hooks and barbed hooks that just stress the fish to death. But even then, it's hard to not say "leave them for the next guy." For every fish you don't catch or can't catch, it could be a great day of fishing for the next person. I wish more people understood how connected the fishermen are who share the waters they fish. Every fish handled properly and released well is another fish for the next hopeful, and a potential player in mating trout if you're lucky enough to live near waters that support natural reproduction. I really respect fishermen like yourself and love your videos!

    Wow, gorgeous place, great fish! You are lucky to live in such a beautiful place. That hat mount for the GoPro doesn't look comfortable, seems too heavy for the brim? I'm still not sure best place to mount mine when fly fishing as I use a vest so no chest mount and since I wear "cheater" magnifying glasses clipped to the brim a hat mount won't work. For now, I attach it to my net handle and use that

    I love your videos. I am fairly new to fly fishing but am absolutely hooked. I've been in CO my whole life (48 years) and just made it down the the southwest a few years back. It's amazing down there. What is the name of the backpack you are using in this video? Thanks

      Its one I bought on Amazon for like $79 or something. Here is a link to it. Its a good one for sure! Allows you to bring extra stuff with you, but still feel like you are fishing with a vest ya know?

      Gerald Swain I've fished the chalk streams in the UK for trout and the rivers in Scotland for salmon and they are both outstanding. And golf in Scotland was superb. Now multiply those by 100 and you have what we have in North America. Add to that very little private water by comparison and many more game fish species. It ain't even close my man!
