- On 'Mythical Kitchen,' Kelly Rowland addresses texting Nelly using an Excel spreadsheet in the rapper's 2002 music video for 'Dilemma.' The singer jokes about it now, but she admits she's 'mad' in retrospect that no one spoke up about the peculiar method of early '00s text messaging.
I am impressed by Nokia being able to get Excel on their device back then. Respect.
Lmbo 🤣🤣🤣
I had a phone like that back then lol.
That phone was rare back in 2002.
Because excel can be run in a symbian arm based device.
@@barneyDcaller But could it run array formulas…hmmm….did array formulas even exist back then? :)
As a software engineer, I would like to inform Kelly that you can send text from Microsoft Excel… it’s a super powerful tool. She doesn’t look crazy lol. She was ahead of her time
Also in Google sheets shared spreadsheets you can definitely text each other exactly how Kelly did with a shared editor/owner etc of the same sheet in real time. Kelly was well ahead of her time.
as a software engineer its hilarious that needed to be said
@@thanosianthemadtitanic yep, establishing myself as someone who knows tech quite well 😉 You can be a software engineer too if you want to. You can do anything you put your mind to
Ya isnt like a secertive way? I swear i did it before on a note app as well.
Nah, she’s crazy.
Kelly still looking fine af after 20+ years 😍
Absolutely!
I hate to compare, but she’s always been prettier than Beyonce.
@@Roccofan I agree, Beyoncé ain’t all that!
Yes, she looks absolutely stunning! And way better than Queen Bey. Kelly was always the most beautiful one and prettier than Beyonce.
@@RoccofanBeyoncé always gave me gay vibes. She’s attractive but she’s not feminine at all. Never bought her being into Jay-Z.
I thought this was a hidden relationship and so they secretly communicated thru a shared Excel sheet.
Bahaa! I needed that laugh, thank you!😂😂
Pretty sneaky... 🤔.
Sending as a file attachment every time would be such a pain, so it has to be true love. Especially at the time it was circuit switched data, even GPRS wasn’t around.
@@Ed20942you wouldn't have to repeatedly share the file. Instead you see the changes being made by other people when you refresh the sheet. That way you secretly conmunicate.
😂😂😂😂
They were obviously communicating via real-time collaboration over a shared OneDrive link of an Excel spreadsheet.
Obviously. 😂
😂
yes except onedrive and cloud storage did not exist back then, at least not to the masses, so they would have to email and attach the doc every time lmao
Nelly not running these streets, he running these Excel spreadsheets 💻 💨
😂😂😂
The fact that she looks the same is CRAZY
shes gorgeous
Dark skin = less wrinkles. Plus make-up.
damn u'r right😂
Never even notice the spread sheet. I just wanted that phone.
Right!! 😂
It was a two way pager . No phone functionality aside from email messages
Honestly I’m a little more impressed that the phone has Excel on it
I Mean when I was 11 in 05 Dad got me a phone like that but it was Virizon and when you flipped it up for the screen it had Cable Tv
And optional NFL package... Not that I used it , it was a feature, Some teenager on a bus ride told her mom, Look at his phone (How old are you) I answered and she yelled He hasn't entered puberty yet and He has a better phone
than me! *stomps foot* lol
It's a Nokia 9210 Communicator, a business-oriented phone from 2001. It probably costed around 800 US dollars of the time. Given its target audience (and cost!) it's not surprising that it included a spreadsheet application (it wasn't Microsoft Excel, but it could open and save Excel files).
Patti LaBelle playing her mom is iconic! 😂
I guess as the song contained elements of her 1983 song 🎶Love, Need and Want You🎶, only made sense to have her in the music video 😝
Wow I didn’t even know that
Patti is always playing somebody's mom. Lloyd "Lay It Down" I think she's playing Lloyd's grandmother. Outkast "Ghettomusick" she's in that music video. She played Dwayne Wade's mom on "A Different World" (classic).
@@OrangeArdmore she's just that cool auntie that all of us have 😂
Why am I just noticing this now?! 😭
It feels like this video just came out 😭 don’t be embarrassed girl ❤ this song is still one of the best
They both haven't aged a day wtf
They have aged 20 years

What a classic song!!! The song Dilemma by Nelly ft Kelly Rowland is one of my favorite songs ever from the 2000s era!!! They did that song so amazingly well and beautiful!!! 😍 🤩 🎶 🎵 🎧 ❤😊😊😊❤😊😊❤❤️ 😍 🤩
Like no wonder he didn't reply! she was on excel!
I don't think Wi-Fi was a thing when this song came out.
What saddens me most is GenZ and Alpha Generation will never know why this song was so popular to garner over a billion views. The woman playing Kelly Rowland's mom is Patti LaBelle, the original singer of the sampled song, "Love, Need, and Want You". This was a Top 10 hit on Ms. LaBelle's sixth studio album, "I'm In Love Again" (1983). The thing that happened with music back in the 90's/early 00's is artists would sample the songs from their parent's generation. The songs they heard growing up around the house or in their neighborhood. Patti LaBelle was a major R&B artist going back to the 60s. She was lead singer in Labelle where she had her biggest hit with the group, "Lady Marmalade" (1974). To come full circle where one of your songs from the 80's is used in a Grammy winning song in 2002 is phenomenal and extremely meaningful to multiple generations. 🎶♥
Yes and not to mention that Lady Marmalade had been covered the year before by Christina, Pink, Mya and Lil Kik
They don’t care! They have their own memories to make. Enjoy yours and be sad about something worth being sad about
Why would that make you sad? The world moves fast, you can’t make people care about everything that happened 20 years ago. They’ll be ok if they don’t know this song 😂
OK but that is not why the song was popular. This song was popular because it was good and really catchy. I don't remember anyone saying that they watched the video just for Patti Labelle 😅
So
Dilemma is arguably the best R&b song of all time. This song takes me back to some good times also.
Put some respect on Kci and Jojo…those boys sangggggg!!
Kelly came through and pulled a lifetime music gem 💎 💐
I remember after that music video came out, every time we had use Excel in school I’d think about this song, wondering why 😂
LMAO
THAT song always gets stuck in my dang head!😮😅Classic video and song💞👏🏻🔥💋
“What did you expect? It’s just a draft, my dear” 😂😂😂
Kelly Rowland has been *breaking her silence* on this Excel thing every few years since about 2015 LOL
🤣
Maybe she was just documenting it in excel spread
This song is a classic!!
Whole time they’re secretly communicating on a shared Google Sheet 😅 🤝🏾
That’s what I’m saying!! the amount of shared documents there must be right now doing exactly this!!😅
I just like to imagine that Kelly was a stylish programming prodigy, who's unrequited love fueled her innovations.
I remember the feeling when this came out, watching MTV on CRT TV. Gonna be 40 this year. Man where did those last 20 years go?
The excel moment lives in my mind rent free. I mean if you ask the top 5 things about the video this would be in it:
1. Nelly is there
2. Kelly is there
3. Song is great 👌🏼
4. Nelly and Kelly fall in love
5. Kelly texts using excel
🙈
I was a college freshman in 2002. Time flew by!
Thank you. I've wondered this for 22 years
Kelly doesn’t know a darn thing about Microsoft Excel. 😂
😂
She said “it’s just a draft” 😂
NOT AT ALL!! You can tell they don't truly understand why it's funny.
Everything about that clip is ICONIC!!!!!
Kelly! We rolling! 😂
Lol how come I didn't notice that.
I was thinking the same thing! 😂
Same 😆
That's one way to Excel in a relationship
Plot twist: It's a shared Excel file so their partners won't find out about their secret convos. 🤣🤣
Yeah, it wasn’t a thing back then unfortunately.
ok but Nelly acknowledging Kelly's impact on the song years later is so sweet. Alot of men would claim the accolade single-handedly.
I don’t think many people had cellphones at the time. So it didn’t seem weird at all, because we just didn’t know.
Yup, plus texting was kinda new to the masses and cost money per text so not many people did it. I was 12 when this song came out w/ no cell phone and just thought that was how texting looked, especially on "rich people phones".
Nah we had em
@@jbthejeweler12I was 18 we def was texting back then lol and playing snake.
Definitely had texting in 2002
I think this about the time I had my Nokia. I remember having having a certain allowance of text messages (like 35) per month so we had to be really careful about using it too much. Maybe she was out of her monthly allowance. Instead of playing games she just created a spreadsheet of the things she wanted to say. My friends and I thought we were cool passing notes on a TI-83 calculator so who knows 🤷♀️
Never knew it was excel. I was only 8 or 9 😂😂😂😂😂
This was a era.i remember being a kid with this out in the summer
Gorgeous Kelly still looks the same now 2024 as in Dilemma 2002 music video 😳! Black don't crack
I think she actually looks better now
I was very young. This song was played in my radio everytime i prepared myself to school. My favorite song back then...
Never noticed that, but now I can't unsee it....
I never paid that much attention to have even noticed it. Now I can't unsee it
Shout out to Mythical Kitchen ❤
Love this song ❤ a classic
Truly a junior-year blast from the past. It's funny how much both music and technology changed in the last 22 years... damn, I'm old...
If it’s a shared document you can message each other through excel x) I was doing a project with my classmates and we were all working on document at the same time and just started messaging through there if we saw other people were online working on the data sheet.
In 2002?
@@lindseycassella3015 LOL no not in 2002 it was 2019. But I feel like I’ve seen some comments regarding this that said “Excel messaging” was something you did with your sneaky links back in the day…So that made me think it was intentional for those in the know back then lol
@@mathewcruz2184that was not a thing lmao
Your music is my ringtone from the first time it released till my phone gone 😢
Really love the tone
She is so genuine, haven't seen a interview with her in years, love that!!
This is the first time I'm hearing about this, but it's hilarious.
My first reaction was "Microsoft Word would've been more authentic," but then I caught myself and thought "Why the %@#$ didn't they just show an actual sent text message???"
I can't think of any excuse other than someone on staff intentionally trying to sabotage the character, lol.
The SMS text probably didn't show clearly on SDTV broadcasts. Most TVs were small too. So they went with the Excel since young viewers wouldn't know what the app was anyways and since you could increase the font-size.
@@poppinc8145 Shouldn't they have to insert video of what's happening on the phone screen in post or something? Because when you shoot an actual screen it gets weird and hard to see.
I questioned it, then and now...!
no one address it, because phones are like a new thing at that time hahahaha.
All the times I watched this video while I was in college, I never noticed that. There's no way I can unsee it now! 😁
That's because we had/have a life. I'm just now seeing this and dont care about that like THOSE people, I just enjoy the video.
I remember seeing that when I was around 11 or 12, but I didn't give it that much thought. That's awesome!
Not gone lie I don't care what happened on that phone and revisionist history always find something out, but at the time that was the best song and was on the top ten for a while. I miss the hell out of those days. Way better than now minus the technology
The way you come thru and holla and scoop me in that two seater that’s GANGSTAAASAA
Ooh it makes sense cause she's trying to hide it from her man 🤣 he would think it's just a document she's working on
I listened to this every heart break since it came out, watched it on the tv, and never payed attention to the texting in the music video
This song felt like it was number one for years.
Live spreadsheets enable others to leave notes and comments so PERIOD Sis! I know Dilemma inspired one of those devs back in the day to add this Feature for the Kelly feature we didn't deserve.
I love that this clip takes place on Wisteria Lane! Great song!
*OMG HOW NOSTALGIC* Reminds me of the *Motorola TalkAbout 2-way pager* my friends & I used to have. I remember I had the blue one & it came in red too 😂😌
I never noticed it
it don't matter
kelly is a kind, beautiful human being . ❤️
Prophetically I just had a text conversation with a coworker through a shared excel file.
Fun Fact: there are 98 "OW" on the song Dilemma
I appreciate this kind of information.
After watching this video I went down a rabbit hole of Nokia and it looks like this was from their communicator series.
I noticed it and thought they were using EMAIL!!!! Lol
Mythical Chef Josh made it on ET!! Credit to MK!! 💜💜
The whole music video was an ad for Nokia
**SILENCE** "WHAT HE SAID"
Good old 6th grade music (2002-2003).. 🙂
Kudos for this video
I really adore her talent and poise ❤ love from PH!
Kelly's deadpan to the camera is golden. So glad this interview happened lol- cause we were all wondering
Sometimes I wonder why Kelly didn't become the pop icon she was supposed to. Obviously that song and music video were just the beginning of great things. As if someone would've blocked her further steps...
I don’t get it. What’s the embarrassing part?
The fact that in the music video it looks like she was texting in excel office which is not a texting application lol. That's like if she tried to bake some bread by putting it in a washing machine
Seriously? lol You must've never worked in an office setting to not recognize that Kelly was "texting" on a well-known worldwide software program designed to create spreadsheets and organize numbers and data with formulas and functions.
when you're in group projects and you're the only one working on it
I pretended to type messages on my little calculator 😂 I get it 😩💀
This song brings so many memories ❤
I didn't Realize that Untill I see it Now The Fact that They did texting Before Texting Became Famous
You can also have a macro inside the Excel workbook that saves the file, opens Outlook and attaches the excel file to outlook, address it and email it. I’m not saying they were thinking this, I’m just saying it’s possible. 😂
Kelly and Nelly they look great ❤❤
Aunties in the hood still rocking that red and black Kelly hairdo from the video 😅
What a gorgeous woman she is
The fact that I knew the exact moment the title was referring to is crazy to me.
Did Nelly private the music video? Can’t find it on TH-cam anymore.
It’s still out there
My favorite music of all time
She was sending him full excel spreadsheets with tables
Let's not forget Kelly getting slammed against the tree by Jason Voorshees.
She still looks SO GOOD !
The video with nelly made her look approachable. Like,... i can get that girl, or a girl like her, or even... Her. This video brought wanting a Good girl; into expectation .
Maybe she's out there waiting for you to answer her Excel messages
Momma's shouting Kelly you got a message on the toaster 😂
Remains one of my favorite songs
Kelly is stunning 🔥
😂 30 yrs later Kelly still dont know why she can't send a text message via spreadsheet 😅
This song was everything!!!!!
We run full government scale programs on Excel. It would've been possible, if Visual Fox Pro was running on that.
"Its just a draft my dear"
I dont think kelly still knows what spreadsheets are for 🤣
That makes the whole thing so much better that's a hilarious mistake the whole time she trying to text him on there
I didn't notice it, that it's been more than 2 decades since... I was on 3rd year high school.
