My Governor is Weirder than Yours

- Or maybe not...there's a lot of weird governors...
But I did get to talk for around an hour with Ryan Busse, who is running against my governor. You might think that, in Montana, there isn't much use running against Republican incumbent governors, and perhaps there isn't, but we've actually had a Democrat in that office for 16 of the last 19 years...which I think is a good reminder that politics is weird, and so is Montana, and so is Greg Gianforte.
Pay attention to your state and local politics...it's important!

Actually, my governor suggested prayer as his legitimate policy plan solution to a record drought. So I think my governor might be weirder, at least in some ways
No, we only wish that was weird.
Distressingly normal for the US.

The president of my church in the 90's had been Eisenhower's Secretary of Agriculture during 1953-1961. While in office, he suggested the exact same thing. Here's a quote from the "Church News", just after his death in 1994:
"On June 27, 1953, while visiting San Antonio, Texas, during a severe drought, Secretary Benson suggested to Gov. Alan Shivers "the wisdom of proclaiming a day of fasting and prayers for rain." On June 30, Gov. Shivers telephoned the Secretary to say San Antonio had more than two inches of rain. Someone sent him a newspaper clipping:
*Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson apparently has contacts that are literally out of this world. When Benson left San Antonio on Sunday he promised south Texas farmers and ranchers immediate drought aid. Less than 24 hours later it rained for the first time in months."*
Hello, fellow Utahns!
Is it Abbott? That sounds like some ridiculous bs Abbott would say.
I'd be happy he's not my governor anymore, buuuut now I'm in Florida so DeSantis isn't any better 😑
"I think he likes to have 'Governor' on his business card" HOOOOOLY SHIT THAT BURN. Instantly invested. 10/10
Hank, when you said any kind of video makes sense on vlogbrothers, I was not expecting a fifty minute interview! 🤣
Wait, this isn't hankschannel?
More 50 minute interviews please.
Boy was I glad to see it though! Montana has become a muddy doormat for wealthy two-homers who come here to ski and fish and don't care about the people who live here year round.
Literally the first thing I thought lol. I've watched every video on this channel and this may be the longest outside of P4A livestreams!
A crash course on organized labor history would be lit 🔥

Yeah. You don't want to know the actual history of organized labor.
It's crimey. And bloody.

I'm from Minnesota, so my Governor actually started the whole "call these weirdos weird to their face" thing. I'm not terrifically jazzed at the prospect of him leaving the job here but I'm certainly excited to vote for him for VP.
I feel the exact same way.
Ok but hear me out: first female Native governor! And continuing our great traditional of excellent VPs. It'll be worth it!
Absolutely!!
so sad that tim would be leaving MN if he wins but I think peggy would be a great fit for gov
Ditto
I'm in Canada. I made it all the way through. Crossing my fingers for human rights, both for your state and country.
I'm only 15min in but I find it really interesting. I'm german and never really hear about american state politics only about presidential elections which get so annoying
Same. I spend way to much time online and hear a lot about US politics, but it's usually national. And if not, it's probably about some policies in Texas, Florida or other red states taking away reproductive rights, banning books in schools or sth similar that seem outlandish from my (obviously biased) German view. So it was very interesting to hear a more in depth conversation about politics in Montana, a state I hardly knew anything about. Helped to remind me that I definitely don't know enough about the 'states' part in the 'United States of America' and I better get rid of some of the prejudices I still have.
@@AV-we6woyes it is rare to get such a candid view! When I talked to my German relatives about their political system I was super confused too 😂 I’m hoping y’all can stay positive and keep the far right away!
Another Canadian echoing this
Agreed! Lots of us Canadians are invested in American politics since some of the trends seep over the border 😅
I truly honestly wish there were more public voices like Ryan Busse at the national level. I live in a deep red southern state and long for a sane voice to unite instead of continue to divide.
Now I want an upload of the whole Pete Buttigieg conversation
@@Neonb88 There is one. At least I saw an hour or so of it.
@@florian-249link? I can’t find it
@@persimnon Hm. In my memory it was longer. It's only 26 minutes long. Maybe because I didn't know who he was before the interview and don't live in America.

@@florian-249 ah, that was the one I’ve already seen. Was hoping you found a hidden longer version because I really liked the interview
😂😂😂 neonb88 why?? That guy failed upwards AF
Not an american, it's just nice to see a conversation about policy not mired by extreme views or personal attacks. Also, well up for more long-form content from you and John 👀👀
It's local politics, which are always more civil, and they agree with each other.
This guy rules. I hope he can overcome partisanship and win

As a fellow Montanan, I fucking love Montana politics. It’s so buck wild. My favorite anti-Gianfore ad was the “those aren’t his cows” ad.
Politics is serious business, but sometimes the framing is absurd
I have no idea what the cow thing is, but hearing that phrase out of context made me chuckle
@@mariannetfinches I mean it’s basically what it says on the tin haha. Last election cycle, Gianforte ran an ad wearing a cowboy hat and there was a barn and cows. His opps ran an ad that was like “That’s a FAKE cowboy hat. That’s a PROP barn. Those aren’t HIS COWS. Gianforte isn’t a real Montanan. Vote for the other guy”
I’m from the suburbs right outside of Chicago and didn’t think I’d be so invested on the drama of Montana politics for almost 50 minutes. Good luck on the elections Montanans.
Hello from Italy! It was an interesting interview. Go Montana people! Make your voice heard by voting for somebody who wants your wellbeing!
In case anyone was wondering, there is nothing about baby dinosaurs in the Bible. I checked.
Even the fundamental creationists have to be like "what? Excuse me"
@@weltfenos1021ya it’s the young earth creationists who want that to be real. If you look it up you’ll find they have even more crazy beliefs and are run by the type of people who would do tax evasion and beat there wives (multiple after the divorces)

Thank goodness you said something. That was gonna weight on me like a... Like a...
Ah, dang, help me out here, guys. What's something large and heavy, but small enough to at least metaphorically not kill you? I dunno, like the baby version of... Something really big? I feel like this is on the tip of my tongue.
Man. Now THIS is gonna weigh on me. Like a baby dinosaur. I'm sure someone will come up with a good simile I can use here.
Thank you for reading the bible for us 😊
This is the kind of perspective America needs more of. Thank you both for sharing this important moment for Montana!!
In particular, I like what he said about working people being at the center of the energy reformation. My biggest gripe with renewables is there's no effort being made to transition coal miners, or coal fired plant workers, into that industry. There's some effort being made with nuclear, because some of the skills do transfer over, but still not as much as there should be.
Local government is always key!
I desperately wish I lived in Montana so I could vote for this guy
+1
Folks like Busse, Walz, Shapiro, and Whitmer are why I'm so confused when the pundits say Democrats don't have a deep bench.
As a Dutchy living in Sweden. "How did I get through all that?"
It was a very pleasant conversation and I learned a thing or two about another place.
Catch y'all later!
Not an American, but this was interesting as hell, Hank. It's always fascinating to hear from such folk, whos principles seem more based on common sense than (what seems like to an outsider like me) arbitrary party lines.
Thanks for that Hank! Its nice to see political candidates that behave as if they are humans. Also highlights others that are so darn weird.
Donate to Florida, Montana,Maine and Texas democratic senators ! These are the most vital senate states! lets flip them to blue! every dime helps, even $5 helps.
As a native Floridian, I approve of this. Rick Scott was a bad governor and now is even worse as a senator
Stop spreading your terrible ideas to great places. California and New York are collapsing because of you guys. Stop bringing your plague to places that don't want you.
@@slamdunkgator915He is also saying people are doing abortions after birth, so you can see where his mind state is at.
As a Mainer, I'm genuinely happy with King as our senator. I understand that he is independent, but I enjoyed his tenure as governor and don't find him bad in the Capitol. People over party is a big thing I heard in this video, and while a party platform is a quick way to learn what someone might do, their history is good too. Hoping for the best.
Also, looking at the competing candidates, I don't see anyone of major concern, though maybe I'm not seeing the ads where I live around here lol
I'm gonna say it. I don't care how long the vlogbrothers video is i'm gonna watch it. This is a power you wield.
Hank: My Governor is weirder than yours!
Me: Oklahoma
I've been in DC for a couple years but I'm hoping to move back to Bozeman next year and I CANNOT WAIT to have Ryan Busse as my governor.
the montana constitution preamble was actually taught in a nature writing course i was in so yes some people do read it for fun! 😂
More of this type of content, please! I love your style of interviewing; the honesty is refreshing!
Great, great interview. 💙
As a north dakota resident with family and friends in Montana I've worried about Montana politics a bit but after seeing some of the national level and feeling like a drop in of water in the ocean this is the right idea of paying attention to the local and state level and not just the national and making sure to show up not to tow the party line but to examine values and see what we have in common reducing inequality and making the country state etc just a little better for everyone thank you
I love this political video. Haven't seen a lot of politics from the Greens. This is exciting! Especially hearing about a state that one doesn't hear a lot about.
Sometimes I have hope.
I'm a french canadian, so it's not often.
But here we go! What a treat.
Hope.
Wish illinois had this kind leadership. We are so much more alike than we know.
As a Canadian (Albertan) this was a very interesting watch
Hank thank you for making this. It's reawakened my investment in local politics, which I often champion but havent been following closely. id like to see one of these for many other candidates
24:00 sometimes i take an earbud out, and buddy, i took the wrong one out
I love the interviews! I think they’re a great addition to the roster of vlogbrother videos.
I get Tim Walz vibes from him. Real salt of the Earth.
Well dang, now I want to read the Montana state constitution.
Watching this while filling out my sample ballot.
How do you figure out how to vote for judges???? What can i even look at?
Local politics effect your everyday life more than national!
True, I'm a New Mexican Resident attending college in Arizona. Those Governors know more science than that
I hope this video helps Ryan Busse to become Montana’s governor, he sounds like the much-needed voice of clarity and self-reflection that is solution-focused and honest
when the thumbnail is thumbnailing... Hank said this ones getting VIEWS views
thank you so much for this interview, please do more interviews like this in the future.
I've really enjoyed learning more about Montana, Especially its labor history! As someone in a very different part of the US, I'm rooting for you guys (MT's people generally, and especially the Busse campaign). I really love the insistence on public land and access to it. The US has pretty much given up on the public project (although maybe it's always been more fraught in urban areas with higher population density and diversity). I'm hoping MT can hold that light out for us, though.
Dang it Hank i’m applying for 5 year phd programs in Florida and you’re making me want to move to montana
So I'm a pesky European with no skin in the Montana game... But it was a fascinating discussion, really interesting history, especially around the state constitution. As outsiders, we only tend to get the Big Headlines from US politics, and many outsiders don't appreciate the diversity across the States. So I got to the end!
My current gov isn’t bad but IIRC 3 of my previous 4 governors were arrested! So yeah, I live in IL.
Hey Hank. I loved this interview. I'm a fellow Montanan. I was curious what your view was on the open primary initiative on the ballot this year. I like the idea of being able to hopefully curve some of the nuttier candidates in the primaries, but I have concerns about one party essentially short changing the other party's candidate. I guess I don't have a lot of good will left for trusting in "good faith" actions.
I am from Massachusetts, we have had more Republican Governors than democratic in my life time. But the are centrist and I think its feasible to imagine that can happen in Montana too.
What hank said at the beginning, where Republicans in red districts don't care and vice versa with blue dems, resonated with me. I'm in R +30 district. My rep doesn't represent us, but never will cuz she had that (R) next to her name
I'd like to find interviews like this with the people running for office where I live.
Canadian who sat through the whole thing. I'm a political junkie and it's good to know about how people think in different places. I loved learning about Montana's constitution. Wish we had done ours that way.
As a new Montana transplant, I love hearing people that talk about the interesting political history of the state. It's been so interesting to learn about what makes this state amazing. I've completely fallen in love with Montana and I feel so privileged to get to experience it.
It was interesting to hear how much the neighborhood is changing (I'm in Washington)
I want a cool NASA jacket!
The audio does a thing at 24:00 where it goes super quiet and left ear only. It comes back at 25:20 and is normal again. I couldn't really hear anything between those timestamps.
State and local elections matter sometimes even more than national ones. Because the state legislature decides on many of your rights and the voting districts. So yeah, all vote state and local as well, and as if they actually effect your life (they do!)
It's always refreshing to watch Americans who aren't insane.
Audio turns funny around 24 mins
I've got no dog in this fight, being from Washington, but it took me a moment to recognize the name. I've read this guy's amicus curiae reports. He's either a liar or an idiot. Some have been so egregious that they had to be pulled, claiming accidental submission. My guess is that he has a particular anti-gun axe to grind, and he'll do whatever he can to get his way on it. The incumbent would have to be Trump-level for me to consider voting for someone who would lie to the courts to that degree.
"I want this place to be better, I really do."
Hank: "Tell me a little bit about why?"
I kid you not, my banner ad during the housing discussion was for VRBO
For anyone who doesn't know when they mention the Medicaid expansion, states get 90% federal reimbursement on the ACA expansion population, and 10 states still have not signed on for it. The feds pay 90% of the costs of covering more people, and they are saying no
I honestly wish I could vote split ticket more, but I haven’t seen a reasonable Ohio Republican in years. I do sometimes vote third party for my local elections, but my choices are often limited to “person who wants to take away my rights and hates that I exist” and “person who doesn’t want to actively harm me”…
Hank I'm sure you know this somewhere in your vast brain - what happens here - In America affects every single part of the world. They don't get a vote but they are truly and deeply affected by what we do, by what we say and by how we vote. It matters to the world. It shouldn't be that way but it is. Some little kid in India, some old person in France, my best friend in Kent England are all affected deeply by what we do here. 💗
Dang, this man speaks facts. I’d love to look more into him
And others he supports
the mic moment was incredible
Love the banter at the beginning 😂
I would say that 98% of policy is actually already decided before the election due to the very restricted ideological window of American politics
This was awesome I always forget how great state politics can be
Good luck getting a better Governor. Between voter suppression and gerrymandering, I don't expect much from my state government anymore. I still vote, mind you. I just don't expect that anybody I vote for will actually win.
Great discussion, it's helpful to have these kinds of conversations.
I want Montana's stream access in Ohio. We'll have to work on that.
I wish my state had hope for getting a sane governor. I hope Montana gets one.
This is really an interesting and unique experience to witness.
Hank, neighbor from the North here up in Kalispell, I am curious to know how Mr. Busse compares to our former Democratic governor Mr. Bullock since you have gotten to interview both men.
As a Montanan and State worker I can not stress how important it is to pay attention and participate in the local government and not just the Governor, but the judges and the AG, like seriously the AG is a big one to watch, look at the shenanigans with the ballot initiates.
IMO, In order to "fix" the cost of living and the cost of housing, we NEED to pass new laws establishing the BASELINES for what constitutes a house(and other living spaces) by amenity and specifying the range of price allowed. I.E.: how many bedrooms, bathrooms, installed utilities, general property size, distance from general services(grocerie stores, schools, 3rd places and entertainment, etc), and material lifespan expectations(because homes made from "cheaper" materials tend to fall apart easier too).
We NEED to get the cost of housing to be STABLE in order to make the cost of LIVING stable, and to do so we need to make laws specifying and dictating such.
Also want to make it clear that I know that there, at one point, was a system like this that was eventually made illegal. If I recall correctly, the main problem as to why it was illegal was that the banks were arbitrarily deciding what counted towards the property value privately, thus having high bias against specific minorities and disenfranchised individuals. I'm suggesting that we have either state or federal institutions created to specifically manage these responsibilities, or to have a preexisting institution's responsibilities and funding expanded to be able to manage it.
MICROPHONE TURNED OFF AT 24:02
There is no need for nuclear. There's many options for how to deal with winter and stick to only renewables. Solar is much less effective in winter, but it's so much cheaper, safer and faster to build up than nuclear that you could just WAY overbuild your solar and storage. But there's also wind which works just fine during winter. Nuclear makes no sense anymore, it's so incredibly expensive and comes with risks that renewables just don't have.
I mean, I'm a Republican and I don't live in Montana, but Busse seems like a cool guy.
My governor is weird, I'm kinda freakin' out
What the heck is this all about?
This is the best advertisement for living in Montana that I've ever seen.
Most of us don't feel represented by the people we elected to do so.
Honestly proud of a guy named Bussy to confidently cling to his name instead of trying to hide it or change the pronunciation
It's nice to see a politician that feels down to earth and 'practical' that also shares my views. I think getting to see my views framed as basic common sense, and not insane radical stuff, it's nice. I don't like in Montana, but I hope Ryan Busse gets into office, we could use more politicians like him. Maybe he can inspire other people to try for public office that are actually trying to make a positive change in the world.
Most down to earth politician I've heard, this is what a Democratic Republic SHOULD be like, not a personality cult for the rich and powerful.
fascinating
Surprised there was no mention of Tester.
This really gave me hope
Is that a box of doom in the background
As my state population is growing, my city and cities around the area had to re-zone our building code to build 6 story apartment buildings. The cool thing is they would make the ground space a retail space and the other floor for renters. It's nice you can go get coffee or go the bar or restaurant near by.... I you want universal background check and red flag pass in your state use the referendum or ballot initiative going. That's how we gun reform going in my state.
My governor relaxed child labor laws. Thats pretty wierd.
No, your governor is exactly the same as everyone else's.
[Preface, this is not an argument against abortion]
Often, people like to pretend that abortion directly affects half of the country; all women, when this is flat out, not the case. Realistically, it is a very small subset of women that are directly affected.
Furthermore, there are very valid arguments against all, but the most extreme examples of, abortion.
Bringing up this issue as the very first issue is a very clear way of stating which side you're on and simply a way of gaining favor for those on your side , just like every other governor.
It is not a universal issue that affects all people. It is a talking point used to fuel political division.
Good morning John. We're now a podcast.
