It’s a turbo stick car, there is a lot of boost built up when he pushes in the clutch and lets off to shift. Sounds like the bypass valves couldn’t open up quickly enough to release the boost. That can cause damage to the throttle body blades.
That back fire is from spark cut when shifting. It allows me to stay full throttle while shifting so boost doesn’t drop between shifts and it also protects the transmission from being shock loaded when shifting. It’s a big part of why the stock transmission is holding up to more than double the stock power.
I'm curious to why "launch mode" is so slow. Stance with the air suspension should take only a moment. Battery warm up might take a few but this seems horribly slow.
The few race cars that have beat the Plaid had all been trailered in… Some might technically be street legal (if they changed the tires in some cases), but they all were trailered in.
And without a doubt, the Plaid is the fastest car on summer street tires. Driving in Florida weather (with sudden unexpected downpours) on a Drag Radial is not wise, and I’ve heard plenty of stories of guys who ended up in a ditch. So although street legal 8-seconds cars exist, you asked about my personal experience. I’ve never found one to race. I’ve never talked to an owner of one. I’ve never ever seen one at Showtime Dragstrip in hundreds of visits. They don’t show up to Bradenton or Orlando on the Test and Tune nights that I’ve been out there. And of course they would absolutely positively require a roll cage (and drag radials or slicks) to run 8 seconds. So unless your definition of a daily driver includes a roll cage and drag tires…
Nah, they would only add weight and rolling resistance to the front axle, which has half the power of the rear axle and doesn't have traction problems on a prepped track...
What can you do to get better times, dont you get bored just doing the same times over and over. With the normal aspirated cars you can up the power and torque and improve but the Plaid just runs the same time with no surprises.
Reasonable question. I’ve raced a lot of other Plaids, but never seen one run a 5-second 1/8th mile. And the records set elsewhere required removing seats and other weight. I thought I could do it. With some effort, I did, without modifying the car: th-cam.com/video/Q1ipJXhM480/w-d-xo.html
…and of course, traction and tires are always variables for all of us. Running the same time with no surprises is also a sport until itself (bracket racing). Yet I mostly prefer to find trailered beasts on less crowded nights (like Street Warz and TnT)
Here’s a thought, why not trying to lower the diameter of your tire i.e. 18 inch wheels with low profile tires or 19 inch wheels with low profile tires therefore lowering your gear ratio which should give you more torque! This would have to be done with all four wheels and tires but that lower gearing will give you more torque should give you faster eighth mile times and maybe even faster quarter-mile times.
@@2t713 I’ve beaten far more wheelies than I’ve lost to, so it felt just fine. Sorry that you missed the point of the video: we are all winning because we are having fun! ⚡️🚙💨
@@2t713 Didn’t watch the video? The Firebird ran 5.97. We beat it. And before that, other cars have run 5.x and lost to the Plaid. Those are the absolute *most* fun! 😃
It looks like your car has 1st gear like acceleration all the way down, and a gas motor has it only in 1st gear then it shifts higher and the rate slows down
It’s a four hour race session. It’s not good to sit on it fully heated. (I’m not gonna destroy my battery by sitting at fully heated for four hours.) When will the next race be? Who knows… When a race is lined up, sometimes I have time to heat it. Sometimes it’s less than one minute’s notice, so I simply don’t have enough time…
@@blackhorsedesign - You will be getting your wish. Dodge is discontinuing production of the Hemi and has already said they will be replacing with electric powered.
The Plaid crossed the finish line first. That’s how a drag race is won. Reaction Times matter. See video description for more details on how this works.
my gaaaaad wait until stock ev's are on par with custom built and blown project cars with ... oh wait. rephrase. wait until custom EVs start getting out against the custom burners if stock ones are doing this kind of damage!
👍 Thankfully it’s just from online trolls that are easy to delete. The other drivers at the track have always been surprisingly friendly and genuinely interested in the car. ⚡️🚙💨
Sounds like you may be looking for races against much more expensive ($150k-$300k) cars? Like: th-cam.com/video/o3BFxKg9BDI/w-d-xo.html (And many races against more expensive Lambos are posted here also)
Sorry I misinterpreted your comment to the other end of the spectrum. Yep, there are some seriously fast junkyard builds. My previous (10-second) Tesla has been beat by some cars that claim to have less than $5000 total investment. Not exactly comfortable family cars, but dang fast nonetheless! 👍
Not needed until 250,000 miles on average. Until then, the maintenance costs are close to zero. (Wiper blades and a coin cell battery for the key fob.) I’ve been driving Teslas for many years now. The costs are so far less than anything I’ve owned before, it’s preposterous. How many cars have you put 250,000 miles on? What were the maintenance costs to that point?
Andrew's other Tesla Model S Raven ran over 1000 runs with just ordinary (for EVs) maintenance, and the original batteries. How many trailered drag race cars can say that they pulled off 1000 solid runs and never rebuilt the engine, and transmission? Many of these faster cars don't make it through a couple months without serious drivetrain rebuild or replacement. Certainly not 250,000 miles (like an EV) and definitely not if it's driven hard. Reliability is an advantage of EVs over conventional engines and cars, not a disadvantage.
And how much does it cost to replace a RACE ENGINE. Refresh it each season (How MANY MILES does a race car get?), and just simple parts replacement, never mind the cost of gasoline, oil and other breakable parts!
As usual a good showing for the Tesla. It’s too bad that President Biden didn’t even mention Tesla as being a pioneer in electric vehicles but mentioned GM and Ford as if Tesla doesn’t exist. Kinda weird, maybe his stock in the other two needs a boost.🙄🤔
It’s a great car the problem is if a man had one he can’t make it his own part of being a car guy or drag racer is building your car takeing a 200 hp motor and building it to 1000 hp and I just do not see the market for that with ev cars it’s like drugs you will chase that same feeling when the Tesla was new but you will never catch it that’s just this hillbilly’s opinion I don’t hate the car but I don’t like the idea of a cookie cutter car culture
Not yet anyway for this Tesla. The Aftermarket always prevails, just as before. Remember the first “computer cars” of the ‘80s? Everyone thought it was the end of tuning. Then MANY tuner companies came out with Performance Chips and much much more. It will all happen again, and both GM and Ford have already released “EV Crate Motors”.
And electric doesn’t need a burnout to hook up, which is a far bigger factor than the extra 1/10th of a second that warming up Drag Strip mode adds. Which one do you think would take every stoplight pull? Every one, because the only faster cars had to be trailered to the track. There are simply no faster cars on the street, period. And even if one was modded to have more power, there’s no way it could get down a road without warming up the tires (which would have to be drag radials or slicks)
Man imagine watching just EVs race. No sound to hear except screeching tires. I mean sure EVs are seconds faster but it doesn’t change the fact that youll be watching the special olympics race.🤣 BORRRING. No sound to hear vibrating through the body that makes the overall statement. What a shame

@@2t713 I’ve beaten far more wheelies than I’ve lost to, so it felt just fine. Sorry that you missed the point of the video: we are all winning because we are having fun! ⚡️🚙💨
@@TeslaPlaidChannel When you're winning it's fun. if you take you Plaid where the cars a running under 6.0 1/8s, your fun isn't going to last long.
@@2t713 Didn’t watch the video? The Firebird ran 5.97. We beat it. And before that, other cars have run 5.x and lost to the Plaid. Those are the absolute *most* fun! 😃
dat trans am........ beautiful .... #icryeverytime
So you gonna dump it to a dodge when they kill the plaid
??? Plaid ain’t going nowhere… ⚡️🚙💨
You are complaining about prep in an AWD car? 🤣
Yep, all cars can spin. Tomorrow’s video will show a half second lost due to spinning alone…
N/A chevy motors get it done 💪
Two great 1/4 mile races against this same Firebird last night. Video to follow 🎥
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I'm gonna sub. Looking forward to this year's race season 😀
It looks like your car has 1st gear like acceleration all the way down, and a gas motor has it only in 1st gear then it shifts higher and the rate slows down
So basically right now, all across America, the gas heads are all enduring an absolute spanking by the volt heads...
Some heads may be exploding? (Some cylinder heads too 💥)
I don't know anything about the Tesla's drag prep - why do you keep having the problem of not being 'ready'? Can't you start preparing a bit earlier?
It’s a four hour race session. It’s not good to sit on it fully heated. (I’m not gonna destroy my battery by sitting at fully heated for four hours.) When will the next race be? Who knows…
When a race is lined up, sometimes I have time to heat it. Sometimes it’s less than one minute’s notice, so I simply don’t have enough time…
@@blackhorsedesign - You will be getting your wish. Dodge is discontinuing production of the Hemi and has already said they will be replacing with electric powered.
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Thanks for the explanation
Plaid is crazy fast but imagine if it had it inside stripped out then imagine nitrous
That is funny. I'm putting a blower on my model X. Lol. Can't wait to see a model y stripped lightweight capacitor batteries, cheater slicks.
No ford is gonna hang with the Tesla
That’s a Ford Maverick.
The lines on the door match the Mercury Comet in the photo charts I’m looking at…. (Or is it your car?)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel No, but I used to have one. You could be right. Love the Tesla!
so in first race if Tesla ran 6.08 and the Firebird ran 5.97 how come he says he beat the Firebird? He lost didn't he? what am I missing?
The Plaid crossed the finish line first. That’s how a drag race is won.
Reaction Times matter. See video description for more details on how this works.
my gaaaaad wait until stock ev's are on par with custom built and blown project cars with ... oh wait. rephrase. wait until custom EVs start getting out against the custom burners if stock ones are doing this kind of damage!
Cut some better lights at this race!!! really helped a run or two!! (except the second run against the firebird)
I’m good with the 0.00, 0.01, and 0.05. The other three races, well, two of them were not a big concern, and not worth risking a red light…
Sucks that you get a lot of hate for just having fun.
👍 Thankfully it’s just from online trolls that are easy to delete. The other drivers at the track have always been surprisingly friendly and genuinely interested in the car. ⚡️🚙💨
Those Teslas are fast but he is racing a $10,000 to $20,000 cost to build car vs his $130,000+ car.
Sounds like you may be looking for races against much more expensive ($150k-$300k) cars? Like: th-cam.com/video/o3BFxKg9BDI/w-d-xo.html
(And many races against more expensive Lambos are posted here also)

Sorry I misinterpreted your comment to the other end of the spectrum. Yep, there are some seriously fast junkyard builds. My previous (10-second) Tesla has been beat by some cars that claim to have less than $5000 total investment. Not exactly comfortable family cars, but dang fast nonetheless! 👍
Sewing machine motor does it all, and quietly
Yawn
Wait until you see how much it cost to replace the batteries. Or buy tabs on the tesla
Not needed until 250,000 miles on average. Until then, the maintenance costs are close to zero. (Wiper blades and a coin cell battery for the key fob.)
I’ve been driving Teslas for many years now.
Maybe cuz musk is a free thinker and not a liberal shill.
You mean RESIDENT joe biden. And yes what he said underneath as well
It’s a great car the problem is if a man had one he can’t make it his own part of being a car guy or drag racer is building your car takeing a 200 hp motor and building it to 1000 hp and I just do not see the market for that with ev cars it’s like drugs you will chase that same feeling when the Tesla was new but you will never catch it that’s just this hillbilly’s opinion I don’t hate the car but I don’t like the idea of a cookie cutter car culture
Electric cars aren't the same you lose alot of the experience . Gas you don't have to wait on it to get race ready.
Ford maverick
The crease line on the side of the car matches the Mercury Comet, not the similar Ford. I researched it thoroughly against the video…
As seen here: www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/123209766049_/Ford-Maverick-model-chart-1970-1977-Grabber.jpg
Ahh it’s a ford I never pay much attention btw I do think the Tesla is cool and very fun and I like what your doing

Fine with us, pick your favorite. Yet which one is winning most of these races?
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Tesla 😄 BTW I subbed .

Yep, that’s why I avoid racing other EVs. More fun to race (and beat) a fire breathing beast! ⚡️🚙💨
Jump on a turbo LS car of any flavor and the Tesla will loose match the number hp for hp
A 3000 pound car should have the same HP as a 5000 pound car? How is that an even matchup?
Then turn off all your computer help no launch control no traction control let it be pedal skill we can do this all night
