Totally agree with your thoughts. Ever since this song came out years ago it’s made me cry every time I hear it! It refers to fathers who are in the Israeli army fighting there. Like a previous commenter said, the year it came out there was a war going on in the area, so it was very real. Yaakov Mordechai (the soloist) is the younger brother of Eli Gerstner (on the piano) who created the yeshiva boys choir. It seems that YBC likes to feature very young kids with more of squeaky type of voice. Each boys choir has a sound-Miami boys choir, yeshiva boys choir, there’s also New York boys choir and Shalsheles junior. All these boy groups have a very distinct sound. And as people have explained the liquid in the menorah cups is olive oil. The reason for this beautiful custom is in the originally Chanuka story. When the Greeks trashed the Temple, the kohanim (plural of kohen-priest) could not find oil with which to light the menorah in the temple. They found one small jug of pure olive oil and one of the miracles of Chanuka is that the small jug burned for eight days. So many people have the custom to use olive oil in their menorahs to commemorate that. I happen to use olive oil every week also for my shabbos candles. I hear your point, generally do not listen to this choir cuz of the voices but some songs that I connect to on an emotional level it doesn't matter the quality of singing rather the meaning of the song takes precedence. Also this made me think about the war in Ukraine, just imagine the kids hoping they daddy's come home safe...
There is a feeling that it is chanuka and the family is hoping daddy can make it home for menorah lighting. Of course this with the backdrop that he may not come home at all- ever. The anxiety the song creates and the relief as soon as you see the dad trudging home - for many kids in israel (and their moms) that is their life.
I'm gonna be honest: As an Israeli, I was surprised this song was so often recommended. It's a super sensitive topic, because this is the story of our lives. You mean Israeli children don't want their father to come home? I'm not sure he is an outsider as all sects do the army. But even if it is all know what is like to long for their father especially when you dont hear from him which can be common in the IDF.

The trauma of your father (who is not normally a military man) suddenly being called to war after your life has already been put on hold by sirens, is not the same as the trauma of the child whose father is always a soldier. Not saying that that child's trauma is not significant, it's just different. Also, this song is basically "exploiting" us emotionally, much like Shwekey's clip of "Cry No More", which is why I don't listen to it regardless. I don't like this kind of "tribute".
@@sheerayb From the uniform and images it seems that he is a military man as much as most Israeli citizens. He probalby does Milluim (for PortuguesePais's sake that is annual military duty). And this is just talking about a point in live when he was called up for war. If you look at the release date it was produced during Operation Pillar of Defense.

It was written for Operation Cast Lead, which is a war that took place on Hanukkah in the winter of 2008-2009.

It's the most emotionally manipulative song in the entire galaxy and I LOVE IT 😂😂 I cried like a baby the first time I saw it and then I went right back and watched it 5 more times so I could cry some more. Yes, there is probably some autotuning going on there. Note: lot of people jumping on the bandwagon to say that they don't like it, but if you look at the comments on the original video there are thousands of very positive comments from Jews, Christians, Muslims, many of whom can sadly directly relate to the subject matter and all of whom seem to have been genuinely moved by the song.
The 'liquid' in the Menorah is pure Olive Oil. Although one fulfills the mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah menorah with many kinds of candles, the best way to do the mitzvah is with a wick and pure olive oil, since the miracle of Chanukah occurred with pure olive oil.
I truly appreciate your respect and curiousity. You must have been an incredible student with your eye for detail and excellent memory. My suggestion would be Hold On Tight by Benny Friedman and Baruch Levine. It touches upon a source of great pain for many (Jewish) couples and is emotional without being too dramatic.

For the soldier wearing tzitzit, i don't think it's officially part of the IDF uniform, but many do wear it, tho they'll often tuck them in. And at the begining of the current war, the uniform colored under shirts with the tzitzit attached were in very high demand, even by non religious soldiers.
Tzitzit/Tzitzis is regarded as a spiritual shield and is worn to protect the wearer. Many people claim to have experienced miracles while wearing them. It would seem counterintuitive to remove them when you are actually going into harm's way.
Oh for sure! I had just never seen them worn on someone in a military outfit. I wasn't aware of the protective spiritual nature of them, which makes a lot more sense. Every time I've come across them they have been on non-military people.
@@PortuguesePai crazy story about tzitzis - when my brother was in the Israeli army (now he lives in NY but is still in the reserves) the commander told him that he had to remove his tzitzis for a training they were going to do because it was over 100° F and that wasn't counting walking up mountains with guys on your back. My brother put up a big fight and refused to remove them. Eventually he got permission to wear them. An interesting thing to note: they do make camouflage colored Tzitzis, meaning the garment is colored, not the strings.

Being that we don't know what the real color of tichelet is these days, we wear plain white strings. To add the strings are what make the garment holy. Without them, the garment is just a garment. We don't know what it is in our times, so therefore it's better not to dye the strings any color as it is forbidden to dye them with the wrong blue ink. The strings plus knots all add up to the number 613 which is meant to remind the wearer of G-d's 613 commandments that He gave us to fulfill.

The liquid in those candles is olive Oil which is the prefered way to light Chanukah Candles. Regarding shabbat a lot use liquid paraphane as it is much nicer as you poiunted out. But for both Candles are just as acceptable.
The candles are oil. In the case of the Shabbat dinner, some people light paraffin, which is more of a liquid oil. Also there are candles called neronim that are lit in deeper cups and become more of an oil as they burn.
4:55 - This was in Kiryat Sefer - not too far from Jerusalem. Obviously, the message doesn't care about the exact location. If I'm not mistaken, this was produced shortly after one of many wars (Cast Lead?) that have unfortunately taken place in Israel in which civilians were the targets of our enemies missiles. In Israel, 3 years of compulsory service is the standard, followed by 2 weeks of service every year until age 40(?).
The soloist is Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner. He is the little brother of the producer - Eli Gerstner ("EG Productions"). Eli is the piano player in this video. So any complaints you have about the soloist selection might be blamed on family bias. But YMG was a member of YBC from the time he was like 4 or 5 and he had a great deal of "cuteness factor" for the choir. You will find other videos featuring YMG available on YT from his younger years. (I think YMG will be turning 20 in 2023, but I can't confirm his birth year).
The kids voice like you said is not so great but it's the producers young son singing. His father Eli Gerstner is the one on the piano. The reason the song is popular is more for the moving lyrics and the tune not the singers voice on this one. At least in my opinion...
I heard Yerachmiel Begun say that the boys in Miami Boys Choir can sing just as high, but as a rule they stick to lower octaves since it's more pleasant on the ears. Yeshiva Boys Choir seems to take a the-higher-the-better approach.
If I might make a recommendation of another song with a similar theme: The lyrics of this song are attributed to Eli Gerstner (the leader of the Yeshiva Boys Choir; the soloist is his younger brother) and Yossi Toiv. The latter is better known by his stage name as "Country Yossi", and has himself produced more than a dozen albums over the years. Most of his songs are "parodies" of popular country songs, imitating (flawlessly) the original music and style while changing the lyrics just enough so they're Jewishly themed. But he's also got a number of original compositions, among them _Little Kinderlach,_ the original for the Kars-4-Kids jingle. The song of his I'd recommend, apropos to this video, is _Little One,_ an original composition from his album _Break Out_ (1989). Love the honesty. I feel that way about Yeshiva Boys Choir in general. They do alot of shrieking which isn't pleasant to the ear. Miami Boys Choir does a much better job training the boys to sing well

Hey Mike, I definitely agree with your take on this one. Not a huge fan of the sound of their voices at all. You actually touch on a very interesting thing culturally which is that the "yeshivish" or "litvish" sect within Orthodox Judaism specifically sing and pray in a nasal and high pitched tone, something not done by the more Hassidic Jews. Another example of this would be the singer Baruch Levine, if you want to check him out to see what I'm talking about.
Yeshivah boys choir is a choir of boys, most have squeakier voices because they’re pre-teen… that’s why we listen to the lyrics rather than the vocals. Also, this song is a tribute to the ones that didn’t make it home… it would just be a rlly depressing song if the father didn’t make it home
Eli Gerstner is actually quite capable of composing original songs that do not have the same Imi, VI, III, VII chord progression and has proven it on many occasions. I actually like their harmonies better than Miami Boys Choir very often as Eli Gerstner is a genius when it comes to harmony. But overall, in terms of talent, execution, song quality and overall production, Miami Boys Choir is a lot better. The YBC video is too "shmaltzy" (cheesy) for my taste. I cannot relate to an American boy in a button-down shirt having a father who is a combat soldier or a fighter pilot in the Israeli army, and so his emotions come over as being just put on

Nothing at all against this kid or his real-life dad, But I always find it's a little bit disingenuous when a community where most people think that it's a Shanda of their kid joins the army makes songs all about how great chayalim are and everybody Talks about how amazingly emotional it is..... While actual chayalim in Israel are clearly not held in high regard for being the heroes they are.
I don’t know if this is a specific war, maybe someone here knows better, there have been so many military operations in Israel that it could be any number of them. Israeli soldiers are always aware there unfortunately may be some action at any moment.

The liquid in those candles is olive Oil which is the prefered way to light Chanukah Candles. Regarding shabbat a lot use liquid paraphane as it is much nicer as you poiunted out. But for both Candles are just as acceptable.

The candles are oil. In the case of the Shabbat dinner, some people light paraffin, which is more of a liquid oil. Also there are candles called neronim that are lit in deeper cups and become more of an oil as they burn.

The soloist is Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner. He is the little brother of the producer - Eli Gerstner ("EG Productions"). Eli is the piano player in this video. So any complaints you have about the soloist selection might be blamed on family bias. But YMG was a member of YBC from the time he was like 4 or 5 and he had a great deal of "cuteness factor" for the choir. You will find other videos featuring YMG available on YT from his younger years. (I think YMG will be turning 20 in 2023, but I can't confirm his birth year).
The kids voice like you said is not so great but it's the producers young son singing. His father Eli Gerstner is the one on the piano. The reason the song is popular is more for the moving lyrics and the tune not the singers voice on this one. At least in my opinion...

I heard Yerachmiel Begun say that the boys in Miami Boys Choir can sing just as high, but as a rule they stick to lower octaves since it's more pleasant on the ears. Yeshiva Boys Choir seems to take a the-higher-the-better approach.
If I might make a recommendation of another song with a similar theme: The lyrics of this song are attributed to Eli Gerstner (the leader of the Yeshiva Boys Choir; the soloist is his younger brother) and Yossi Toiv. The latter is better known by his stage name as "Country Yossi", and has himself produced more than a dozen albums over the years. Most of his songs are "parodies" of popular country songs, imitating (flawlessly) the original music and style while changing the lyrics just enough so they're Jewishly themed. But he's also got a number of original compositions, among them _Little Kinderlach,_ the original for the Kars-4-Kids jingle.
The song of his I'd recommend, apropos to this video, is _Little One,_ an original composition from his album _Break Out_ (1989). Love the honesty. I feel that way about Yeshiva Boys Choir in general. They do alot of shrieking which isn't pleasant to the ear. Miami Boys Choir does a much better job training the boys to sing well

Hey Mike, I definitely agree with your take on this one. Not a huge fan of the sound of their voices at all. You actually touch on a very interesting thing culturally which is that the "yeshivish" or "litvish" sect within Orthodox Judaism specifically sing and pray in a nasal and high pitched tone, something not done by the more Hassidic Jews. Another example of this would be the singer Baruch Levine, if you want to check him out to see what I'm talking about.

Yeshivah boys choir is a choir of boys, most have squeakier voices because they’re pre-teen… that’s why we listen to the lyrics rather than the vocals. Also, this song is a tribute to the ones that didn’t make it home… it would just be a rlly depressing song if the father didn’t make it home

Eli Gerstner is actually quite capable of composing original songs that do not have the same Imi, VI, III, VII chord progression and has proven it on many occasions. I actually like their harmonies better than Miami Boys Choir very often as Eli Gerstner is a genius when it comes to harmony. But overall, in terms of talent, execution, song quality and overall production, Miami Boys Choir is a lot better.

The YBC video is too "shmaltzy" (cheesy) for my taste. I cannot relate to an American boy in a button-down shirt having a father who is a combat soldier or a fighter pilot in the Israeli army, and so his emotions come over as being just put on

Nothing at all against this kid or his real-life dad, But I always find it's a little bit disingenuous when a community where most people think that it's a Shanda of their kid joins the army makes songs all about how great chayalim are and everybody Talks about how amazingly emotional it is.....
