How to make a simple hat on a round knitting loom

  • When I was first learning how to crochet, my mom asked me to help her with a charity project - if she bought the yarn, would I make blankets and scarves? I agreed immediately, mostly because I didn't have money for yarn at the time. A year or so into this project, she asked if I could make hats. I hadn't learned how to work in the round yet, so I said no... but then we saw these round looms at Michaels one day, with the picture of a winter hat on the front of the packaging. Mom asked if I'd like to learn how to make hats on the looms, and I said yes! That year, sure enough, Santa left a set of round looms under the tree. That was back in the late 90's. I've made at least 1000 hats just like the one in this video, where I hope I describe how to do so well enough, for you to make as many hats as you would like!
    This hat ended up using 71.4 yards of Paton's Melody yarn. In my experience, you'll want to make sure you have at least 60 yards of whatever yarn you're using.

    I've scanned many patterns and videos, but this was the easiest and most thorough to follow and the presenter is so kind!

    Thank you for this video. I couldn't believe how simple it was to make a hat. Your explanation was very clear and easy to understand. I have been crocheting for years, but this method of no counting or marking stitches is an easy way to work on a project while watching TV at night.

    You explain everything really well and it's very easy to understand even for a beginner. I have a question tho, i know how to knit using circular needles and i usually do around 100 stitches of 1×1 rib pattern for a beanie. I have never used a loom and wanted to learn knitting on one. So my question is, does the fabric knitted in a loom is as stretchable as of the needles and what size of loom and yarn should use to make a beanie?

    • @fantasticmio
      @fantasticmio  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The stitch I use on my looms is equivalent to the twisted knit stitch, which isn't as stretchy as stockinette, and definitely not as stretchy as 1x1 ribbing. That being said, you can absolutely do both of those stitch patterns on a loom (I just don't bother).
      These round loom sets are typically best used with a chunky yarn (#5 on the ball band), or something you'd use size 8 or 9 mm needles with.
      I use mostly the 36 peg loom for hats.
      My best advice is to try making one and see how big it turns out to be.

    Can you make it double thickness by making a long tube and making both ends the top? I don’t know if my question makes sense. I have seen videos of the addi or sentry machine and they make theirs double thickness. I was wondering if you can also make it like that with the loom. Thank you, I enjoyed your video and explanation

    • @fantasticmio
      @fantasticmio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! I do believe you can. I haven't tried it yet because the looms I have use thick yarn already. There is a technique for starting that results in a draw string closure at the beginning. Otherwise, you can leave a longer starting end, and then just baste through the stitches at the bottom to close it up.

    About how long would it take a complete beginner to make one of these hats?

    • @fantasticmio
      @fantasticmio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It really depends on the beginner. I'd book yourself 3 hours and see where you get.

  • @andreasteele2814
    @andreasteele2814 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Is the largest loom actually too big??? I'm trying to learn and several videos I've seen use the 40/41 peg loom but the hats don't look too big. I'm confused.

    • @fantasticmio
      @fantasticmio  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It depends a lot on your gauge and what stitch you're using. If you're getting hats you like, then that's all that matters.

      You could take the stitches off your loom with your large eyed needle. Seems it might be quicker.🙂Just an observation.
