    As far as .45ACP, anything over 200 grain should be +P. Being a 230, and +P they didn't stand a chance in any of the testing. What ever the projectile is made of, it still should have done something to try and open up. I'm sure glad technology has caught up and given us some good ammo these days. Thanks for another great effort/test Tools!

    As a newcomer to the 1911 .45 ACP platform, I'm still very much in the training wheels phase of things. I do have some 185 grain HP but definitely over-invested in the 230 HP round for my 1911's (three Tisas, two government models and a 4.25 carry model). All my HPs are much newer manufacture, including the most recent which was 500 rounds of Sellier & Bellot 230 grain JHP .45 ACP. But moving forward, I'm definitely going to pick up some 185 grain HPs. Down the road, I intend to replace my Glock 43 with the 4.25 carry model for daily carry, good thing I caught this latest video. Appreciate your diligence and research that you do on behalf of those of us who really need the information. Godspeed!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Magtech used to make one called First Defense that was a Solid Copper Hollow Point. They used to be featured in all the Taurus Firearms catalogs back in the late 1990s wnd early 2000s. They had decent performance but nothing like Barnes and some others since then. Magtech also makes a 95 grain soft point 9mm round that does better than you would expect. I shoot magtech target fmj rounds all the time. Their price is good and I have never had an issue.

    I agree with you that 230gr stuff is sketchy(non-performing) in 4" and shorter barrels and is only effective if all you want is penetration. I have 4" on my .45ACP, 185gr for defense, 200gr cast , powdercoated for target. With the load developed for the 200gr, it has nearly the same recoil impulse as the 185gr factory stuff, also same POI at 10yd. I'll save my 230gr stuff for when I run out of everything else.

    Back in the day, the 230 gr Federal Hydra-Shok had the best reputation in compiled street stops, BUT "only from 5" barrels." That's what my old agency issued long ago (and I still have several boxes so that's what I carry). Currently, I have a USP and a RIA Commander sized 1911, neither have 5" barrels BUT neither did the SIG P220 I used to carry (and shot until it shot patters rather than groups, LOL). From the 220 it opened up fine (had to take out a feral dog that was biting and chasing kids), so I still carry it. Anyway, I'm being long-winded as usual. Great test and just shows yet again that not every hollow point round can be trusted to expand.

    I believe some ammo companies scam us by putting standard pressure loads in boxes marked +P just to make more money off of the ammo. It's already well known in the firearm world that factory 10mm loads are pretty weak most of the time. You pay for 10mm and get .40 S&W performance. Yes, there are some good 10mm loads that are loaded to full boogie 10mm specs, but they are even more pricey than the ripoff ammo. if you think about it, one of the only ways to cheat and make extra money selling ammunition is to skimp on the powder charge. When you're loading millions of rounds, even a fraction of a grain less of powder per cartridge adds up to hundreds or even thousands of pounds of powder on an industrial scale depending on what kind of powder they use. If they cheat on 10mm, why wouldn't they cheat with other rounds like the .45 as well?

  • @conro7003

    It’s not a velocity problem. 230 45 velocity is tough to get to expand, but the right bullet construction will get you great expansion. Look at federals UMC and golden saber. Haven’t seen you so then with cloth, but I’ve seen them on some of that fbi organic gel with cloth and they act just like your test with them without the cloth. IMO they are the perfect balance between expansion and penetration especially the UMC. I’ve seen other rounds do one better, but neither the same. The UMC r cheap for hollow points too.

    Those older projectiles were not designed to expand at low velocities or through heavy clothes. Once ballistic gel testing really got popular that's when we started to see solutions like the polymer ball in the hollow point, ultra lightweight and fast projectiles and alternate compositions like sintered metal. The past is never as good as we'd like to remember it.

    Funny. My neighbor loads 45acp and 45GAP for me using Enforcer powder.
    The GAP loads do 1000fps with a 230 grain load with no pressure signs from a G37.

      They were made in Brazil,I have fired the 180 plus p.
      Your looking at 50 grains lighter still with a good size hollow point.
      They were hot and loud they are rated at 1250 FPS
      I did not use a Chrono.
      But I tested them beside sig v crown 10mm.
      Both five inch barrel.
      Used a Kimber for the 45 and a Ruger for the 10mm.
      They both went through the same amount of 2x6s both had big exit damage and both were loud.
      I'm not a fan of 230 grains in a 45.
      Seems to me they used the same quantity of powder in the 230 and the 180.
      All I can say is the 180 would get the job done.
      The 10mm v crown has the same weight and FPS listed on box.
      Unless you can find hot 10mm,I doubt there is much difference.
      Remember the standard bullet weight on a 10 is 180.
      My guess is they used the same amount of powder in both 230 and 180 grain due to pressure concerns.
      They should not have labeled the 230 +p.
      Hornady makes a 230 plus p I would use that if you want better performance.
      They have the flex lock in the Hornady so it may not fill up like other hollow points.
      I noticed in another Hornady with out flex lock the bullet was partially filled with a clear substance as well mid way up.

    I agree the 230 grain 45 acp jhp just never seems to work. I sometimes carry a 45 acp shield with a 3.4 inch barrel and I like the Sierra 185s and I have some 165 grain federal hydra shocks that seem like a great choice for a short barreled 45. I had them around 1028 out of my shield and almost 1100fps out of my full sized. I don’t have any gel to test them in but I feel pretty confident in them because they are used in a backup gun and if I’m using it it’s probably a bad situation. Don’t sleep on the lighter much faster jhp’s for the 45! As always an informative and entertaining video!

    Well....
    They look nice, I reckon.
    I just landed some Federal 45 LE loads that aren't in production any more. They're actually highly rated by, uh, state medical examiners.
    In the world of "official" shooting results, they were at the top of the list of 45 ammo that put dicks in the dirt for a while. Stock #LE45T1. I believe they were discontinued in 2015 or so. I bought a raft of em, so I'll test some and then get ahold of you so maybe you can add them to the library.

  • @montywomack9535
    @montywomack9535 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's why I sold my 45 there so over rated, not saying that it won't get the job done. But if someone would make those big weight big diameter rounds come in around 1,400 fps plus, I'd probably buy another 45.

      Definitely an overrated caliber. Usually a bunch of macho man, Village People type guys that are slaves to the size. They probably also drive Dodge Rams with the 5.7 Hemi and an oil leak worse than the Exxon Valdez.
      Jokes aside, I don't care what people use, so long as they're proficient when it comes time to boogaloo.

    Just looked. Magatech has Gaurduan Gold 45 ACP +P 230gn on tbeir website. They are claiming 1150ft/sec from a 5" barrel.
    Try with a new batch? Redemption attempt video?
    I have my doubts but would be cool to watch.

  • @tuldok89
    @tuldok89 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man, I knew it. I shouldn't have bought this ammo. I got one because their website claimed this ammo to be 1150 fps from a 5" barrel. Guess that was a huge fucking lie. I have a 4.25"-inch gun. I was thinking that was enough velocity to compensate for a three quarter-inch loss of barrel.

    I’ve been reloading about a year now, regarding 45 acp, would less than 230grain be a better shooting experience in a shorter gun like my Glock 30 SF ? Never used anything other than 230.
    Thanks for your advice

    • @ToolsandTargets
      @ToolsandTargets  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guess that would depend on how hot you load it. Probably be easier to load it not as hot as a 230 and still get good performance from a 185.
