A million dollar advice, as an Architect i spent most of my time searching for better jobs until i worked on some projects for non skilled random developer guys and realised, i am doing all wrong i need some investment and start my own business and now i am saving for 1250 sft residential plot for a starter.

Your experience is very similar to mine. I appreciate the compliment and I think you're doing a great job too! Keep us posted on how your project is going.

I am a fourth year Master of Architecture student and I have been interested recently in development and how to merge the disciplines or at least work in both. It seems to me that the two professions have very different visions for a project.
My professors don’t have the knowledge on how to make this idea happen, so I REALLY appreciate this video.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I think you have a good goal set and you should continue learning about merging both disciplines.

I've been saying this same thing for YEARS !!!! 80% of what we are forced to build is ugly. its depressing and sucks.
We HAVE to accept peoples opinions who aren't trained in architecture ... why ... just because they have money? WE are the professionals !!!
Does you doctor ask YOUR opinion when doctoring? Does your dentist ? Does you lawyer ?
So why do we.... WE NEED to become the developers. This is the future / next wave for architecture!!!!
Im getting my plot of land and starting. WE ALL need to do the same.

Great video! I'm actually going through a tough time as I graduated from school almost 3 years ago and still haven't found a job as an architectural technologist. I'm thinking that I should just start doing small projects on my own and I'm also in the process of becoming accredited (this is in Canada and I just started with the membership) so fingers crossed to more opportunities and work in the near future.

this is perfect especially from you already being in the field of architecture already. not many people are documenting this specific scenario. ive seen some videos of people doing fix and flips as an example and of course our field can be very subjective, but some of these people can't even create good spaces as an example or can't differentiate circulation and a living spaces. Cant wait to be able to take advantage of my profession and collaborate it with my love for business as well. IT ONLY MAKES SENSE

Yea, most people document the "finished product". I haven't started developing yet but I'm very close to starting (hopefully next year!). But I'll be using this channel to document ideas and nuggets of info until I'm able to showcase a physical project. Good luck on your journey as well!

I’m in a similar boat, I just got licensed and it’s tough negotiating for a better salary. There are several books on architects becoming developers I’ve been reading. I’m looking for ward to hearing about your journey!

That's actually how all of this started. I got tired of having to struggle to get better pay and having the future of my career be in the hands of my employers. Feel free to share that list here and I'll pin it. Thanks for following my journey, happy to learn more about yours too as time goes by.

Yes that Architect as developer book by James Petty, how to start and operate your own architecture and design firm by Albert Rubeling(more for structuring the architectural part of the firm) and besides that lectures and the Business of Architecture podcast often has guests in this boat. The Jonathan Segal one was great and I’m thinking about enrolling in his course, it’s just a bit of a money commitment. I’d love to hear more of your resources as well.
