Yeah it feels so weird that this One Piece production seemingly has some of the most effort put into it out of any Live Action Anime adaptation, when One Piece is by far one of the most cartoony and unrealistic anime you could possibly try to adapt lol. Like Some of the early parts probably won't be so bad since the core East Blue crew are all mostly normal looking humans. But like as time goes on it's going to be harder and harder to just adapt the crew with characters like Brook and Franky let alone the other wild characters like Big Mom and the like. I'm 100% with Pat in saying that One Piece is just the least live action adaptable series ever, even before you take into account that you're gonna need to do like 12 seasons where each season has to cover like 100 chapters at a time. I mean in theory with enough time skill and effort a talented enough team could make anything good I'm sure, but there's gonna have to be a lot of changes in adaptation to even possibly make it work at all. If anything I would rather they just start over with the One Piece anime and just animate it better with better pacing and no filler (except G-8 you can keep that in). Obviously there's the benefit of using modern tools to make it look prettier, but I mean imagine if they could actually cover like 3 chapters an episode like most other anime do, instead of barely covering even 1 and having to stretch things out as much as possible to stay behind the manga.
The east blue saga was 100 manga chapters, but the anime was only 53, and now the live action will presumedly cut it down to 8 1-hour episodes. The remixed movies for East Blue, Alabasta, and Drum Island show One Piece arcs can be shortened a great deal. Though you miss some fun character moments. But it was still simple back then. Now, Oda writes a "dissertation" on each page of the manga. It is bloated with dialouge. Post 2011, the anime stopped making filler arcs (special episode here or there), but still a 100 episode to chapter difference. Until Dressrosa, in which the anime is 16 episodes longer than the number of chapters, continuing that trend into later arcs. It's still an outrageous amount of work and content to get through
Oda does write a lot more per chapter these days sure but One Piece is hardly the most wordy manga in the world. Either way you could still easily fit 2 chapters per episode at least if they weren't constrainted by having to make an episode every week with almost no breaks. Like yeah the Anime hasn't had a ton of filler episodes, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have filler, it's just in the episodes itself, with various things drawn out and taking way longer than they need to in order to fill time so that they don't cover too much per episode. A standoff lasting just a bit too long, a flurry rush being extended out to multiple minutes, a scene with a bunch of bunch of cutaway reaction shots shown one at a time instead of all at once, etc etc.
Yeah I mean. It would be amazing for people to be able to experience how fucking amazing one piece is, but its absolutely getting like, 3 seasons maximum.
The only "negative" things I have to say about the One Piece trailer is that I find suspicius that they show so little of the devil fruit powers which makes me fear of the quality of the special effects, and that all the backgrounds they showed in the trailer make it look like they filmed the show in a CSGO map.
If you want a point of reference woolie. "the grand line" is the chunin exams. Technically naruto had an arc before that, but the chunin exams is where the story actually starts moving.
@@nahuel3433 The grand line isn't an arc. Its the place the plot takes place in. If i wanted to be pedantic i'd say "lougetown is the chunin exams" because that the arc that leads to their entrance in the grand line. But thats not what i mean, i mean that The chunin exams and the entrance to the grand line is the same kind of plot structured event in their respective manga. The chunin exams lead into the next arc, which leads into the next arc and so on and so fort until we get to the time skip, after which point a then recently introduced group becomes relevant, after which get into the next arc, and then the next one and so on. See? similar plot structure, thats what im trying to convey here, im just saying the plot structure is similar, so people who have watched one and not the other can easily understand.
@@Bizarrejoe IDK why you got so defensive because I wasn't exactly disagreeing. NOW I do though because since you got into specifics I would say it's Itachi's arrival which starts the chain of events of the plot. Considering the chinnin exams end and that's almost that. It's Itachi showing up going "yo" which directly leads to the need to hunt down Tsunade for the next arc, and it's that arrival which makes Sasuke freak out enough he goes ferral and after Orochimaru's power. Regardless this isn't worth arguing over your main point was that it's basically where the series stops setting up so much and goes into high gear regardless of technicalities still stands. I might not completely think chunnin is it, but it's certainly seen as a memorable Naruto arc.
I feel like the people that say it looks great are hard coping Don't get me wrong, visually it's as good as it could get. But nothing luffy said felt like Luffy to me. Even just the VO of Luffy talking about his dreams is pretty unlike him imo. He is short and to the point. It's very rare we ever see him open up on more than a single sentence. The one that broke it for me was him trying to deescalate Zoro and Nami's fight. That shit ain't Luffy at all. He is cunning enough to know that such small deal fights aren't anything serious and dumb enough that he'd LOVE seeing them get into a fist fight and he'd join in because it's a pirate thing to do. That or he wouldn't care at all and get loudly distracted by some other thing Like how many times in 1000 chapters has Luffy stepped between Zoro and Sanji fighting? This is bringing me back to when we saw the Cowboy Bebop trailers and everyone was like "wow that's amazing this is gonna be great, look at how much hard work they put in this. Sure the trailer shows some differences but it'll be amazing" Like pure cope despite some cause for concern. And Bebop isn't as impossible to adapt. Well at least buggy seems to be looking cool.
I think it will be fine, not great but fine. I'd feel better about it if they actually filmed in the Caribbean like the Pirate films that would be great. I'm most curious about how they do characters like Sanji, is he just gonna be cool Bond guy whose's flirtatious or full horny dude like in the source?

One Piece is tight. Up there with the other greats of the genre for sure. I might even say it's my favorite. I don't have any faith in a live action One Piece and I don't see how anyone familiar with it could. Cowboy Bebop could've sorta been a story made in live action originally, but you don't take cartooniness out of One Piece without two entirely different identities. A panel or an animated shot of Luffy grinning doesn't translate to real life. Also no way I believe people Netflix hired have the ability to capture the chaotic charm of One Piece in the writing or acting. The only thing I'm curious about is how will they misrepresent the original so we can reflect on what makes One Piece work and adaptation not. There is for instance a great scene comparison-video on the Netflix' Cowboy Bebop and the movie: Mimicking Without Understanding.
The actors who could've played Luffy are either dead or too old. Brandon Lee would've nailed it if he were alive. Still there's stage show actors who pull it off. Leonardo DiCaprio would've perfected for Sanji 20 years ago. He's got Sanji's troubling taste in younger women too.

I'm a massive fan of One Piece and got so salt at Pat's comments at about One Piece's style. I think the show will be okay. Like Sandman it'll try it's best to adapt something not meant to be adapted and then cancelled.
Avatar the Last Airbender was basically perfect and literally everything that came after that series, be it korra or those comics where sokka drives a clipart forklift, has been mediocre at best. Its clear the creators have zero idea what they're doing and that show was only as good as it was because they had a team behind them. I'll remind you they didn't walk off M.night's movie.
when it comes to Pats feeling on One Piece's art style, it brings to mind something Woolie once said "It's not about right and wrong, it's about having less then shit taste" Pat has failed at the first hurdle there, I myself am not fond of the OP art style 70% of the time but I still respect the hell out of what Oda was going for to keep things visually varied up in a potentially redundant setting XD
As someone really deeply entrenched in the Atla fandom and whatnot, the creators Mike and Bryan are kind of overrated and kind of insufferable to work with from what I've heard. A lot of the really good stuff in Avatar came from Aaron Ehasz and other writers. Look to the quality of Korra and the post series comics to see the dip in quality. They're a lot more like George Lucas than most fans realize; great concept but bad execution without help from more talented people. Bryke leaving Netflix was, apparently, a really sudden and unprofessional move on their part. Them leaving Netflix might not be as much of bad omen as it seems. Them starting Avatar studios could just be out of spite and you shouldn't expect the animated stuff coming from them to be guaranteed to be good.
People are viewing it through the wrong lens, it’s not trying to replicate reality like berserk it’s shooting more for a Saturday morning cartoon visual style (which perfectly matches the tone of the series imo)
I'm just gonna say it, I think making Kamala Khan have energy powers was a good move, there was no way they could have made her "embiggen" look good without dumping like a trillion dollars and hours into creating a new form of CGI stretchy powers, it would have looked like a SF6 Cronenberg.
To be fair with the Netflix Avatar, Michael DiMartino and Brian Konietzko are honestly not really deserving of the credit they get for Avatar, the person that really made ATLA good was Aaron Ehasz. Korra is trash, and i don't care how much people act like the Lesbian representation redeems it. I'm so sad, I literally just wanted the adventures of the adult Gaang in the aftermath of the war, not oblique references to how Aang was apparently a shit father and Zukos marriage fell apart before he got with some random woman. At the very least we know that Sokka was, in fact, the true rizzbender to rule them all.
I’m a big One Piece fan but I think the One Piece Netflix show looks awful and I have no faith in Netflix, even with Oda supervising every once in a while. Personally I think the fan base is just coping right now saying the trailer made it look good. Here’s hoping it’s good but that trailer didn’t give me any hope, looked like a Disney straight to T.V movie. I agree with Pat that I don’t think One Piece can be adapted to live action. At least with this budget. Already we’ve seen in the trailer they are dialling the absurd things back to make it visually work. It just won’t work in the end, at the very least not without compromising almost everything that makes One Piece unique. One Piece is known for world building so I don’t understand why they just couldn’t do an animated short series based off other characters or a different era. Regurgitating the story in live action is a fools errand that will never catch up with the manga and anime in a million years. Netflix has yet to succeed in a anime live action so I just don’t understand how the whole fan base is so optimistic.
Woolie you can save yourself several hours by continuining to never watch the live action Last Airbender. It really is incredibly disappointing if you're a fan of the show.
I disagree with Pat. One Piece will probably be bad, but it existing doesn't really detract from something else, and live action adaption has the potential to actually differentiate itself from the original in a cool way. It won't, but it could. I'm looking forward to it for some dumb fun. If it sucks, I still have the manga and anime. But it's probably not going to see a season 2.
@@cormano64I mean there’s Watchmen, Cowboy Bebop, the Resident Evil movies, Percy Jackson, Godzilla (I was born in 1998, I saw the bad American one first), X-Men movies, Ghost Rider, Spawn, Moon Knight, FF7 and Sandman imo.

I really wished they had filmed in Caribbean or something. If they have more budget than Game of Thrones don't settle for a blue screen.

If you want a point of reference woolie. "the grand line" is the chunin exams. Technically naruto had an arc before that, but the chunin exams is where the story actually starts moving.
Except the Grand Line party is still ongoing

Don't get me wrong, visually it's as good as it could get.
That or he wouldn't care at all and get loudly distracted by some other thing
Like how many times in 1000 chapters has Luffy stepped between Zoro and Sanji fighting?
This is bringing me back to when we saw the Cowboy Bebop trailers and everyone was like "wow that's amazing this is gonna be great, look at how much hard work they put in this. Sure the trailer shows some differences but it'll be amazing" Like pure cope despite some cause for concern. And Bebop isn't as impossible to adapt.
Well at least buggy seems to be looking cool.

Pat loves being hypocritical he loves JoJo for all the stylised and unrealistic character designs.
He's got Sanji's troubling taste in younger women too.

when it comes to Pats feeling on One Piece's art style, it brings to mind something Woolie once said "It's not about right and wrong, it's about having less then shit taste" Pat has failed at the first hurdle there, I myself am not fond of the OP art style 70% of the time but I still respect the hell out of what Oda was going for to keep things visually varied up in a potentially redundant setting XD
I just want to see how this turns out!
Wool should really give One Piece a read.
If Bryke had their way there would be terrible love triangles in ATLA and Iroh would be a asshole.
I think that since they're only doing early One Piece, they won't get to the really insane character designs
East Blue us pretty tame compared to what comes later. Still Pat ragging on Oda art is not on, especially since Woolie has even read it yet.
Even with just East Blue, they still gotta show Arlong Park full of fishmen.
Also saying sokka would do this is slander
This is one thing I've always disagreed with Pat on. I think the art of One Piece is great.
The series wouldn't be unique and awesome if it didn't have crazy art.
Wang Fire sounds like a urinary tract infection.
Oh, Woolie hasn't seen MCU Ms Marvel huh
No one did tbh
Dont trust people on twitter who will say anything looks goods if it exists
The girl that Marlon Brando got to come up during his awards speech and talk about "Native Issues" wasn't native either.
