Anyone who is an Oscar Peterson fan can clearly hear the influence this man had on Oscar's piano playing. More often than not, Oscar gets compared to Art Tatum because both of them exhibited such phenomenal and explosive technique, but he is more Nat than Art. Nat's way of articulating his notes as if he were singing them to you on the piano was what you really heard in Oscar's playing. There are countless interviews of Oscar talking about Nat with such warmth and aspiration. Nat King Cole was an innovator and amazing pianist/vocalist. Ray Charles was also a very known diehard fan of Nat's. This song actually makes a really convincing argument for me to become single again! 😂
markwest1987 not only that but anyone who's seen an interview where he talked about Nat Cole would know! He sung Nat Cole's praises every chance he got! He LOVED his playing and always talked about the enormous influence he'd had on his playing.
Nat was THE most influential jazz pianist ever. Not only Oscar Peterson but Ahmad Jamal, Phineas Newborn, Hank Jones, Bill Evans, Red Garland Wynton Kelly, Dave McKenna, Cedar Walton and many more were great admirers of Nat Cole's style of piano playing.
Just read a fascinating biography about Nat and reading about how he compensated for broken keys & out of tune pianos led to his uniquely special piano playing just makes me appreciate this genius even more. #He'sTheGreatest Thanks for posting!!
Thanks2much for your uploading, here I could appreciate some of the ''most infravalorated pianist'' of the jazz music. I had heard some about Nat Cole pianist but I don't have heard.
I started out to become a jazz pianist; in the meantime I started singing and I sang the way I felt and that's just the way it came out. - Nat King Cole, Voice of America interview, c.1956
It seems in sync with the playing. I think what you're seeing is strobing -- the kind of thing you see later with adjustable aperture motion picture cameras when the aperture is too small -- the movement appears jerky. In this case I suspect it's an artifact of the the transfer from the original film to video/digital.
People only reminded him of his wonderful voice but his pianoskills are awesome, swinging!

I had heard some about Nat Cole pianist but I don't have heard.
Nat said more in short 16 bars here than most piano piano players in their whole career
Classic stuff!
How did we go from this to "Gold all in my watch! Don't balee me jeh watch!"
@vova47 AMEN!!!!
@99ECCLES you're right he didn't start singing until a few years after his career started
Does a video version exist of this trio just playing instrumentals?
Still one of the most hippest jazz pianists….
thanks man
And yet Ken Burns omitted him in his Jazz documentary.
Wtf!! He ACTUALLY plays the piano man!!!
Sometimes it seems it was too bad this man had a voice from God; deprived us of 30 years or so of straight up great jazz instrumentals.
That's what the best jazz musicians said of him, " Too bad Nat can sing" ! !
Ha !

There is not enough of early Nat playing piano...although this one seems quite derived from Django...
@RevoIutionz
"better to be by yourself"
:)
Anyone notice they sped up the tape during the solo sections?

hmmm... I think Ken S is correct.
@GatorGirl04 where can you find that biography?
Dear Philem, mate, where do you get this stuff - Nat is so hot and either he is mimicking the guitarist's style or vice versa - magic together!!
Hi Walter, I cut this in the documentary "Piano Blues" directed by Clint Eastwood in 2003.
must watch - merci, mesuer!

Oscar Moore
