You can always take the samples of the water yourself and take it to someone. There are private entities that support environmental efforts that can look into it and they have a LOT more pull with the bureaucrats than a single person does. If you do take samples, make sure you document it all, time, date and place.
Private entities aren't the only ones who can test. The local watershed/public water authority should be just as concerned as he is at the amount of dead fish and lack of life in the creek.
In typical government fashion they pass the problem on to someone else to avoid the paperwork. I hope someone actually comes out and investigates. Keep us posted. And thanks for another rad video!!
It blows my mind that you talked to the EPA about a possible hazardous contaminate in a public waterway and they told you to make an email complaint. How about, get off your ass and go investigate it? alright im done running my mouth, Awesome video bud, looking forward to the next one!
The only thing I can see an email helping with is like a paper trail. On this date, someone noticed a suspicious lack of living things in a creek and made calls due to concerns they had.
Wow unbelievable you have to make a formal email complaint. So much for the protection of wildlife and the environment. In the uk 🇬🇧 if you ring NR to report an issue they are sending someone out as fast as they can. No email or form filling xxx FairPlay nick ty for looking out for our planet xxx
It's sad it takes so many steps for the EPA to look at something. Yet they can just roll up to your property and fine you $20,000 a day for something you didn't know was wrong.
I've ran into similar issues with questionable water quality when I go on similar fishing excursions in Mn & Wi. The Minnesota river in particular is bad and there are a lot of old businesses/plants that dump dirty water into the river and in one stretch not far from Minneapolis you can drive through it in a boat and the prop churns up a lot of foam that smells just like laundry detergent and the smell gets so bad that it's hard to stay and fish the area. When contacting the EPA and similar state agency I find that these old businesses were grandfathered-in at some point and can keep doing it until they shut down or do enough building or remodeling that it is considered a new business and new permits have to be issued. The place I mentioned, I first noticed about 20 years ago and it is still the same disgusting soapy water. But despite the pollution, that stretch somehow produces trophy walleyes, smallmouth, and catfish on a regular basis. Also you can search through the EPA's and your states environmental agency websites to find databases with this info, usually also with precise coordinates of the pipes dumping in. He might be able to do the same for this stream to find out what and why.
I don't live in your area but water quality all over our country is in danger. I truly hope there is an investigation please keep us informed and thank you! You truly care and it shows! I look forward every week for your latest show ❤
Hopefully there is a future update on that creek. Maybe you need to start a podcast series on this mystery chemical in the creek. : ) you have everyone hanging on the edge of our seats.
Dude. I can’t even imagine the amount of time and effort that goes into drone shots, slow mo, walking away from the camera and having to go back for it, syncing audios and more. Truly the best doing it
Good grief. You try to do the right thing and get drowned in bureaucracy and people who can't be bothered to do their jobs. "Oh...did you try the EPA?" EPA -> "Oh, did you use the complaint line?" None of them work to serve the people in any capacity.
Someone else on the various comment threads said it was possible to collect your own sample and send it to someone, but maybe you and some of your people can call in the problem as well. Unfortunately that water way will probably just get ignored no matter how many "Formal Complaints" you leave or everyone leaves together unless there is a well off person or big enough company being affected by the die off and or negative effects of what's going on....
That looks a lot like the situation at my local creek from a few years ago. It turned out that a local farmer upstream dumped a large quantity of unused pesticide. It gave the water a white hue and killed everything for the season. The fish came back the next season to some extent but it took 3-4 years to fully recover.
Looks like all you caught at that first place was red tape. Kudos for calling it in. Most folks wouldn’t. At the 2nd spot you got bullhead, bowfin, and all you needed was a buffalo! Great video, Nick!

Last summer we had a sewage spill into our SD River which flows into an estuary before reaching a popular beach. I called it in and the person transferred me and the following respondent wanted to transfer me as well. I carefully explained that this is why the general public is distrustful and frustrated with our government. She eventually took down all the information to forward to the proper department. She actually wanted me to go track down WHERE the sewage leak was coming from. I contacted the local volunteers group (SDRP) that had a cleanup planned the next day, a Saturday, and they called the right people AND even gave a follow up phone call and email. The sewage spill was 2 miles away up on the hill overlooking the river. The spill killed all the fish in about 1.5m. The following week it rained and carried the contaminated water further down stream and killed off the remaining freashwater fish. It has been almost a yr now and the freshwater species have yet to return; it is just hundreds of turtles and crayfish.
618 fishing with the water being that low it probably hasn't rained a lot in quite a while that's probably why the water looks so stagnant and no water is flowing over the spillway so it's probably been dry for quite a while
great work bud, do love the irony that right at the time (3:49) you say your going to call someone as you havent seen anything alive... you can see a fish flash (i think) in the water
Heroes for assuming based on literally nothing that this was not a normal thing caused by the spillway being so dry? No water coming over dam = no water for fish.... That tiny creek isn't enough to sustain fish population the size of what he found dead.
The spillway at 6:01 scares the hell out of me. Notice the concrete in on the mid-left hand side is bowed up and continuously leaking. Indicates water undermining the dam. Looks like a dangerous failing dam.
Great catches of fish and that 2nd spillway that you're fishing at I will definitely have to check that out and go fishing at it sometime in the future and I probably may use a bobber and fish the bottom as well
That was an excellent storyline. Outstanding B-roll angles and clarity. Very well done, especially taking the important step for making the outdoors a cleaner place for everyone. Can’t wait to watch and enjoy more.
Nice one , I love how much you care for the welfare of the fish and the environment in which they live, these episodes remind me of when I was a kid fishing with my dad, some of life’s greatest lessons are learned along a riverbank, the first and greatest being patience
And this other creek that you're fishing at I will definitely have to go fishing here and see if I can catch my PB fish and catch my first big decent-sized fish in 2 years
The government couldn’t care less about the environment. Just ask the people of East Palestine Ohio. Absolutely nothing has been cleaned up since the derailment.

The way those people on the phone just shuffled you around and palmed you off to the next person. Doesnt exactly fill me with any sort of confidence that the issue will ever get looked into or taken care of.
Literally every government agency ever. The only way to get anything done is to get your congressman involved. Just had to call a state senator last week to get a court order enforced. This used to be such a great country...
@4:43 Formal complaint line. We'll send somebody out. You know, there used to be SO many lobbyist in D.C. trying to grease palms, that Senators and Congress members had troubles moving about. Thus the FDA was formed. A lube station everyone knew to go to and get their stuff approved. The last bit of drinking water in any state would be sold to a cola company if they forked over the money. I say this knowing it's been done in other countries already. I'm from Tucson. Moved there in 76' when 12. I watched all the wells in the Flowing Wells district, the San Pedro and the Santa Cruz run dry. The Rio Grande is a trickling stream. A river named by Conquistadors that had seen some rivers in their travels named it that! But it's just a part of the planet's life cycles, it will come around again soon. Right?
I live in Minnesota and one of the main lakes i go to got completely killed off by a clean up of toxic Chemicals in the dirt near the lake it got in the water
My neighbor has a pond deep in the Ozarks that my brother and I have fished for a few years now. This year though it seams all the big bass we use to catch has disappeared. There's minnows everywhere, frogs, snakes, turtles, everything you would see in a pond but the big fish are gone. Even the bluegill and sunfish are gone, strangest thing I've ever seen.
Damn, that first creek is one of my worst nightmares. I love to just go walking and watch the little fish you routinely call bait. Them being all gone while such nice big fish are just lying on the bank really blows.
When I was a boy, the same thing happened to our local creek. I called the fish commission (not knowing anyone else at the time) and they came out. The day before we could smell a petroleum odor and an orange slick on top of the water. We wouldn't touch it because we didn't know what it was. It happened again about ten years later
The water treatment plant near my childhood house regularly dumps into the creek and you can see fish just floating down it dead. Sometimes the water is white (instead of dark brown) and they post signs saying biohazard.
You were really putting the slam on those fish Nick maybe ease up on the horsing them in so you do not injure fish you plan on releasing... Another great video tho brother as always thank you for taking us along for the journey ....
A while back a few lake that feed some creeks were so low, due to little or no rain for a long while, they stopped flowing over the dams . And it caused an algae to grow and killed tons of fish. Once the rains came back it washed most of the algae out but the damage is done.
Im glad you done the right thing and called to find out about the water in that creek. Love your channel, love the music and look forward to the next adventure Nick! Love from the ole hillbilly, Kenny peace!
Went through something similar as a kid. We were wading a mile or two up and down a local creek and we all recieved chemical burns in a 2 to 3 inch band around our legs. It was reported and the probable source was found but during the night after we reported it there was a large storm that flushed out the creek and the storm water where it was believed the contamination came from. By the time they took samples they found nothing. We all had definite chemical burns which took a few weeks to totally disappear.
Wow that is really concerning. I luckily havnt noticed anything like that from this trip out there, but that’s unfortunate that they never found the cause at your spot
Wow nick nearly ripped the lips out of the first few.hopefully the water problem gets sorted tight lines buddy wish you would come to the UK and give your talents a go 🎣 🎣🎣
Government agencies for you. Gov: "There's a formal complaint line that will come directly to us. I'll give it to you..." Citizen: "But I'm talking to you right now..."
I mostly watch flyfishing videos but love your videos, too. Your enthusiasm, high relative fraction of video focused on fishing, and overall quality are excellent.
They really need to investigate this! As for the rest of the video some great catches and good size as well! I do hope they investigate find out what’s going on at the first place. Have a great and safe weekend dude and see you next adventure!
Great work Nick. Hopefully they follow-up on what is happening in that creek. By the way would still live a "see you later buddy" tee shirt 😂 keep up the great content

Great idea!
Most public tap water is intentionally poisoned. Why would they care about a creek?
In most cases like this the oxygen level was either to high or too low.
Please keep us posted on the status of your phone call. I hope they investigate
For real something definitely seemed not right
Seems like there's no urgency from the folks you called. Send an email? Really?
Yea there not going to do anything

Even here I'm genuinely confused as to their reaction. Dnr or state wildlife services are all the most active law enforcement we have.

Easy to collect a sample and
Do a fast PH test, PPM, EC, and many other water tests by yourself cheaply. You can also collect and send Off to a lab.
Where is this at ? What lake? I have licenses in Texas through the Tex enviro quality commis and maybe able to check out.

When I was a boy, the same thing happened to our local creek. I called the fish commission (not knowing anyone else at the time) and they came out. The day before we could smell a petroleum odor and an orange slick on top of the water. We wouldn't touch it because we didn't know what it was.
It happened again about ten years later
Government - “we love the environment rah rah save the trees”
Also government - “call someone else about the environmental concerns you have”
Crazy episode man. Please keep them coming👍
Does this lake have two dams and there's a spillway at the bottom part of the screen looks dry downstream
The water treatment plant near my childhood house regularly dumps into the creek and you can see fish just floating down it dead. Sometimes the water is white (instead of dark brown) and they post signs saying biohazard.
That's wild .....bet they won't do a thing about it either
please keep us posted I live in the 618 and would like to know that something is done happy fishing!
Calling the gov in a nutshell "call someone else till you get sent to the complaint box."
They put signs up "No swimming" along a local creek to me "Indian Creek". It runs into South Fork then into Catawba River here in North Carolina.
I tease you a lot about losing fish... You set the hook like 10 times.. I like it bro haha
Nick I love watching you catch the bowfin. I wonder how many I have seen you catch?! Keep it the great videos we love them!
Wow nick nearly ripped the lips out of the first few.hopefully the water problem gets sorted tight lines buddy wish you would come to the UK and give your talents a go 🎣 🎣🎣
Bullhead is flathead candy, also please keep us posted on the water in that creek!!
I'm glad you were still able to end it off with a nice spot. Awesome video
Take water samples on your own to an independent lab for testing, show the lab where the samples came from as well
Love your videos, buddy! Hopefully you get a response from EPA. Keep fishin' !
I havn't watched your videos in a few years and i must say im impressed w/ the production quality
Government agencies for you.
Gov: "There's a formal complaint line that will come directly to us. I'll give it to you..."
Citizen: "But I'm talking to you right now..."
So many companies get busted for dumping chemicals in streams like that every year. Glad you called, wish there was a place to send a sample.
I'm proud of you, a long walk like that one and you didn't fall or even trip.
