    When Miles O'Brien became Chief Engineer at DS9, it seems to me he was put in charge of two kinds of systems, and two kinds only. Those were the ones that were broken and those which would break at any second.

    The thing is, those aren't, strictly speaking, Federation replicators. They're Cardassian replicators that have been jury-rigged to work with Federation technology. That's why they're breaking down all the time, and why O'Brien is the only one able to get them working:No one else on the station has any experience with getting these two technologies to work together.

    • @Jokie155
      @Jokie155 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      He actually imports a lot of the ingredients and such that he uses for mixing drinks. In The Magnificent Ferengi, he talks about his wry negotiating skills in securing some exclusive syrup from what was supposedly a very limited supply, and there's quite a few episodes where its mentioned he's importing illicit goods in addition to his usual stuff. That and the bar itself offers more than just beverages, in that it becomes a place for social activity, like the replimat did for Bashir and Garak.

    • @Synthmilk
      @Synthmilk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Because outside of the Federation, replicator patterns are not freely available and must be purchased. Since the Federation doesn't have authority over the station, they are simply invited Administrators, the Station operates outside the Federation economy, thus no access to the Federation replicator pattern database other than for the Federation staff, not to mention Federation patterns probably wouldn't work on Cardassian replicators as standard.

      For the same reason we go to restaurants in real life, I imagine. It's cheaper and more comfortable to just eat in your own home, even if you have to cook it yourself, but people still go to expensive restaurants all the time for the experience of a publicly shared meal. DS9 even has the "RepliMat" which is a public seating area where people just get food from the replicator to eat in public, like the Star Trek equivalent of a fast food joint, so people obviously pay for the specifics at Quark's - the atmosphere, the people, the noise, the non-replicated luxury food, etc.
      Also remember that the Federation is largely moneyless, and most other civilizations that have replicators likely have very little actual currency in circulation because they are by definition post-scarcity societies, so money is simply not that important to the people of the Star Trek future. If you don't have to pay an electric bill every month, can always get food, water and clothes free of charge in any style you want, why not spend the little money you have on something superfluous? It's not like you benefit from a large savings account unless you're a Ferengi.

    If he's an Operations Chief, why's he in charge of maintenance?
    In a naval sense operations -operates-. So they'd run the day to day operations of the space station, whatever those are. Engineering should be doing maintenance. So O'Brien should be some kind of engineering Chief, like he was on the Enterprise.
    Furthermore, he's a Chief, he shouldn't be doing maintenance, but supervising and training other people to do it.

    When Chief O'brien was handed over to DS9 I always used to think (in universe, not real life) that he must have done something really bad on the Enterprise to be given such a raw deal.
    He's forced to slave a broken, overly complicated and notoriously bad Cardassian system with the Federation system that's almost perfect to a point and so refined and perfected that it will seldom be contracted to work with any other technology and if it could, the Federstion system would just fault code like.every 5 mins because the Cardassian system is doing something poorly, dangerous or is littered with bad code, bad software and viruses that the Cardassians left behind out of paranoid spite.
    Further to this, The Chief centred episodes are all about him suffering horribly. Either physically, mentally or emotionally.
    Why did the writers want to make the Cheif suffer so much?

      Quark has access to specialized culinary copyrighted food and beverage material from the best chefs in the quadrant. The molecular patterns of this fine cuisine are programs that run off a digital rights management system. Think of how digital copyright copies are handled today and it's the same idea. There are license fees he has to pay to offer this and it's passed down to the customers when they order something. Regular replicators don't have this. Think of it like having a commercial grade kitchen, most people don't have that in their homes because it is too expensive.
