A few points to make: 1. No one was calling Feliks washed in 2018, it was post covid where people started emphasizing it. 2. By comparing tymon and feliks’s solutions, you can see that tymon’s solutions are less turn speed based, while feliks is basically standard cfop with some zb aspects. 3. Feliks’s best averages are being overtaken by several people, and if the up and coming Chinese cubers can compete in worlds 23, it’ll be difficult for feliks to beat, especially since he’s not at his peak anymore.

Matthew in his comment on this worded it wrong. Feliks is by no means underrated. I'm pretty sure what he meant was that Feliks is being forgotten when he shouldn't be, and that he's underestimated. Feel free to argue, it's ur opinion, but I think he's underestimated based on what Matthew said in the video.

One of my favourite comments related to Feliks was on a video '' Feliks vs Tymon '', where a commenter wrote,
"Feliks is like Lightning Mcqueen in Cars, he was shining, the fastest and the champion before. But now, just like in the movie, many cubers appear more advance and fast. And some of feliks buddies of cubing before like mats and others are slowly innactive in cubing just like mcqueen and his buddies in movies. It's sad but still feliks is the only champion that sticks in our heart, forever."
i still hope that Feliks wins the 2023 world championship, it's quite hard for him now but, miracles can happen...

I have been cubing since Feb 2015 , it's pretty annoying to see new cubers call Tymon or Max the GOAT whereas they haven't even set a lot of records like Feliks. They know nothing about Feliks Zemdegs , the person who has 350+ records across all speedcubing events. Tymon and Max are great cubers but Feliks for me is on a whole different level . Newer cubers should put some respect on his name.

Yeah, Feliks has his job and other things so he can't just put his whole effort in cubing like 2010s, but you can still see him got some sub 6.5 or even sub 6 avg on his channel. Eh bringing up times and placings from pre 2020 feels a little disingenuous to everyone who has gotten more notable results after this time period, and it’s pretty clear to most people that Feliks is past his prime. That’s not to say he isn’t undoubtedly the goat, unfortunately life just gets in the way, but there’s a lot to consider for the world championships that are still a year away. Plus worlds finals is such a volatile round in general, usually anyone who’s top 6ish on the psych sheet can sneak the win with a reasonable performance, so I wouldn’t count anybody out for first place at this point (feliks included of course).

    • @Speedcubing-TV
      @Speedcubing-TV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Fair enough. I do find it hard find any more recent data though. Like when was the last major championships Feliks competed alongside people like Tymon and Matty? It’s hard to gauge where everyone would be now. I will say though the Matty and Tymon continental championship wins were crazy! Just don’t know how that stacks up to Worlds nerves 🤷‍♂️. But you probably know that a lot better than me!

Interesting video with some very solid points. Personally, while I’d love to see Feliks make a comeback, I’m not all too sure if it’s realistic for him to win Worlds anymore. In one of LazerMonkey’s videos he himself admitted that he peaked in 2018, and has been averaging high-6 since 2019. Keeping up with Tymon and Max would be a tall order since sub-6 has become the norm for them. But then again, Worlds 2019 showed us that pretty much anybody could snag the win on a good day, so who knows?

I honestly think that this is a great point.. Since Feliks has the advantage with experience, he really can't be ruled out. Anyways, I genuinely think that his previous WRs were impressive, but the quantity could be explainable. It's most likely because speedcubing has just been booming at his time, and WRs were nothing compared to now. Albeit, his records are very impressive, but I'd say that the more recent a WR is, the harder it is to beat.

Feliks has it unfairly hard simply because he's _technically_ slipping down the ranks (for now anyway), but imagine someone had the exact same competition PBs he has now but were NEW and climbing the ranks instead of slipping. They would be considered a HUGE deal. He's literally currently one of only three people in the world to be in the top 10 for both single and average of 3^3 to 7^3 TODAY, the third best overall N^3 solver in the world right NOW. People can talk about "washed" when they can do better.
I remember when Alexander Lau was second in the world while Feliks was first. Alexander isn't even in the top 100 anymore but Feliks is nearly 30-years-old and still very firmly in the game. He didn't fall off; he's just more busy now.
That's still young in the grand scheme of things though. He's not some geezer with dementia and horribly aching fingers lol. I honestly believe if some billionaire told Feliks they would fund him for life, to drop all his responsibilities and start cubing 8 hours per day as his new job, he might just world record sweep the N^3 events again.
Edit: I should add that Feliks said he only cubed like 30 minutes to an hour per day on average and had some days he didn't solve at all even in his PRIME which is almost hard for me to believe to be honest. People like Max, Tymon, Ruihang, Yiheng, etc. all practice far more than that. As a classical musician and speedrunner, it's just the norm for me to assume that people at the top of speed events are practicing about 8 hours per day, not impossible at all but basically like a job.
Edit to the edit: I'm not sure about worlds though. Despite his experience, I think Feliks is absolutely horrible with nerves. They're his biggest weakness and all the washed comments and pressure are only going to make that worse. I'm exactly the same. I can learn new classical pieces and have them down flawlessly on command when alone but sound so bad if I go to record them or show someone live that I sound almost like I made it up and I have to practice about 10 times more to the same with that pressure.
I think Tymon is the opposite. He's one of those rare people who somehow does better under pressure than without it sometimes. It's arguably a bigger asset than his efficiency and exactly why he was so dominant in Monkey League while other people did worse in that format. My suspicions were confirmed when he still got world record while having to do a resolve with what felt like the whole world watching.
I'd love to see Feliks win though.
Edit to the edit to the edit (I swear I'm done lol): I've always thought it seemed almost made up that the goat, Feliks, has a name that replaces the usual X with a KS, and was the goat of something most outsiders think is spelled "Rubix" but is actually "Rubik's". The exact same thing. I swear it seems scripted.

It is clearly seen that Felix's is not at his prime anymore, people like Ruixang, Max, Leo and Matty are all already comparable to Felix. But Felix has one VERY big advantage, experience. He started to cube the earliest, he was under pressure the most and I love that this point was mentioned in this video. The only thing that he maybe is not so good at is his lookahead and Iam not saying that his look is bad, Iam just saying that it's not world record material. For example, Tymon's look ahead is just godly, he can basically predict and execute his oll before inserting his last pair, also making double x-crosses like it's nothing...

I'm sorry but no. This video actually bothers me.
You mentioned he won a Warmup comp 2019. A WARMUP Comp. He didn't even end up podium in the actual world championship. Sure, he was extremely close. But close doesn't mean win. Not to mention the winning time was much slower than either NAC or Europe's winner.
Then you go onto mention how he won 2018 US Nats but seemingly forget how that was 4 years ago which is a very long time for cubing. Plus this comp meant very little as there was no title for him to even win.
Also if we really are gonna mention times then it has to be mentioned that Tymon, despite being the world record holder still won euros despite an actual sub par performance with 6.06 average.
When was the last time Feliks had av average sub that? (Edit: he did get one out liar 5.95 average) 2019... I repeat 2019, which was his world record average. And he only tied 6.06 in 2021. And Matty won NAC with an amazing 5.68 average. Even better than Tymons.
Also you seem to forget he also failed to podium in 2017. When he was still in his prime where Max Park ended up winning or Seung Huyk Nahm if luck was on his side that day.. Meaning that Feliks didn't get 5 flawless solves to win in 2017. And he also failed to podium in Asia championship the following year. Not even replicating what he did in Nats 2018. Which by the way wasn't even the North American Championship meaning no Canadian or mexican could win. So in the end it doesn't even mean that much to him. Cause in the end there was nothing for him to even lose or gain.
So really how good is he now? Now before anyone gets mad he is the greatest cuber ever. And no one can take that away from him. He has had so many NxN titles. World records, continental records Etc. But that doesn't mean he will magically reclaim the title of the best at any of the NxNs overnight. To many people are faster than him on average. Especially at 3x3.
Experience is very overrated in a solo hobby or sport due to the fact that it's only you. It's not like basketball where if one team has every inexperienced starters with tons of talent, while the other has tons off experience where it's actually evens out. I mention basketball specifically because of the last seasons final. Where golden state has many veteran guys and Boston had many young players, and the pressure got them despite leading the series. But in warriors case they had those veterans. Solo sport isn't like that. Because it is only you and no one else. This means you can't rely on someone else to help you nor drag you to a win like the Warriors. Skill matters way more in solo sports. That's what makes the Olympics so definitive. Because many events are solo. Where talent matters just as much. In the Tokyo summer Olympics Keagan Palmer. A teen from Australia won the skateboarding event despite being only 18 years old at the time. With older and more experienced skateboarders in the finals as well. That was the most recent example of an inexperienced but talented and skilled individual winning a major medal, despite the lack of experience. There are more I could look up.
So how did he then win all off these championships before you ask? Well simply put he was actually more talented and skilled than anyone else. Between 2012 and 2016 he was ahead of the curve. But since then he has no World championship podium, which begs the question how good he really is under pressure. Only a few out liar sub 6 averages. Unlike the best today like Tymon who gets sub 6 almost every average. Max park who also gets is very often. Ruihang Xu. Ok you get it. Simply put people are getting ahead of him now. And it is clear to me that feliks is past his prime. Also the experience these insane cubers have gotten now the past two years has proven to be more than enough to win championships. Tymon literally just won Euroes. The second biggest title he could win.
The chances of Feliks getting top 5 isn't farfetched. The chances are of him podium isn't that unrealistic. But the odds of him winning are slim to none.
I usually think your videos are great. Most are well thought out. Well written and good edit work. But this video has to many holes that you either forgot or choose to not include to make your case stronger. And I really dislike how you include some details but ignore or forget more important details. That immediately counter your own points. I unfortunately have to give this video a dislike due to the fact amount of loopholes and details that aren't included.

I definitely think experience is a lot more important than you might think. Back in 2011 Feliks was supposed to win the world championships but messed up due to nerves. On Chris Mills’ podcast he talked about how he worked a lot on handling nerves for 2013 and 2015. I do think though the failure of 2017 really helped him grow to win 2018 US Nats and a warm up comp on 2019. Even as a warm up comp it had many great competitors he had to compete against. Feliks hasn’t really competed in a major since 2019 so I also don’t have much evidence to pull from. I just feel people overlook experience and nerves when it comes to cubing. I appreciate your thoughts though!

@@Speedcubing-TV The problem here again is you bring up the comps that doesn't mean a lot to him. He couldn't be the US Champ and winning a Warmup comp doesn't mean to much to him or anyone for that matter. Like seriously has anyone been existed about winning a Warmup comp?
And in the end the problem is that I don't think he is good enough to win. Which is honestly a much bigger hurdle.

if everyone gets their average times, the podium is likely gonna be tymon max and matty in no particular order, feliks is gonna need crazy luck to podium let alone win, just because of how far ahead the other three are. tymons 4.56 under insane pressure proves hes either going to win or atleast get podium, max is just max, and matty i dont know too much about, but he is still pretty damn good. not to mention the really young chinese cubers like yiheng and ruihang, and theres also seung hyuk nahm to take into consideration, so we really dont know whats gonna happen in terms of feliks winning. feliks has a job, he cant cube as much. hes still the greatest of all time, but i think 2015 is the last win were ever gonna see from feliks.

My argument is that no one gets their avg times with the nerves of a world finals. With Feliks almost having “nothing to lose” and all his experience, I think he’ll get closer to his avg times than potentially others who seemed to be favored by the general public and don’t have as much experience on a world stage.

All well-deserved props to Felix, but I just don't think it's going to happen. By worlds next year, it will have been almost 4 years since Felix got a PR average, which was WR at the time. His comp times since then have been trending upwards, while Max Park and Tymon have been chewing down towards that 5.00 mark with a vengeance. Yes, experience counts for something. But IMO both Max and Tymon have had plenty of experience in high-pressure situations (like that one where Tymon had to do an extra scramble with a WR on the line? Insane!), so I don't think that makes a compelling case for Feliks.

I'm not saying that I disagree with you, but 2019 is already 3 years ago, Feliks has started his job, and he has less time to practice, just look at his results in his latest competitions, he's constantly getting more and more non-sub-7 averages, which shows that his consistency is getting worse than before i.e. in 2019 or so when he's at his peak and still held the world record.

I hate it when people starts to say Feliks is done. It's true that fancier solvers are appearing, faster solvers are appearing, but if Feliks still cubes, ofc he will find ways to push himself further right? just like any other cubers. Eventually, at least for 3x3, anyone is still in the game. So far it's still too early to say anyone dominating 3x3.
Moreover, cubing is not just about winning or breaking record. It's a community. Even though we see the rivalry between many talented cubers, I believe that all of them are good friends more than rivals. That is why cubing is beautiful. Cubing might be a competition between cubers, but in my opinion ultimately cubing is a battle of a group of cubers against a common enemy: time.
I would only regard Feliks as done when he quits cubing. And ofc he's forever a legend and we cannot forget what he has done to the cubing community. Without him I'm sure this community can't get this far right now
