Hey Chris, welcome to the crazy world of DC mixing that Fender does on these and the 68 Custom amps. You’re absolutely correct - the noise floor drops dramatically if you change it to a decoupled AC mixer.

wow, since you're here lyle; I kinda remember you saying that the out of phase heaters do some humbucking action. Is it so, or am I misremembering?

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

No, I think you’re thinking of my saying a long tailed pair PI and output tubes act kind of like humbuckers so heater noise isn’t much of a concern there.
But it certainly is in the preamps.
Note : I’m uncomfortable being asked questions on Chris’ channel. Ask him - he’s completely qualified.

@@PsionicAudio ah, I see! thanks for the answer!, and didn't mean any discomfort of course. it was just a coincidence that watching chris' video made me think about your (misremembered by me) comment and here you were on the comment section, hehe.
so i'd like the opportunity then to ask Chris, if he catches this answer, what kind of trouble does wiring the heaters out of phase bring, and by what mechanism ?

"Anyone who knows anything about Fender amplifiers, knows that the reverb anode wire needs to loop around the socket." Anyone indeed, except for the engineers at Fender. 🙂

The fender custom deluxe reverb, looks like it was wired by a 16yr old on a YTS scheme 😂😂😂

the total lack of care and quality in modern Fender stuff is really shocking.

Hi Chris, you may have noticed by now but that schematic for the 2204 Marshall is for the non cascaded channel model that was only made in 1976. That design didn't sound as good as the 2203 100watt which was always cascaded. By late 1976 the 50 watt was brought into line with the 100 and given the pre-amp that now know and love! Really pleased to see one of these on your bench, my all time favourite amp!!

My understanding of it is that they use that method of mixing on the 68 custom because it just needs a single jumper on the pre-existing pcb, then when they’re making a new amp why not just copy that hack?

I tried the trem thump elimination cap to ground in my ’71 DR and it did not work. I then tried it across the 10meg and it worked. I think Fender made this change to the “bulletin” on this at some point.

i'm interested in what you used to clean pots in my first job as a TV repair 1974 my boss didn't like cleaning much prefer to change Them saying they'll be back in two weeks noisy again

the heater wiring isn’t all in phase in my 77 Super reverb, doesn’t seem to be causing any issues though 🤔

Fender is being taking the piss since the mid 80s. They price of that deluxe with the terrible wiring is quite outlandish too.

Why the hell did he rewire the heater wires if all he did was turn a combo into a head/speaker cab configuration? That sounds incomprehensible.

Hi Chris, where do you source your chassis? I know you do your own layout and sheet metal work, but where do you buy the blank chassis? Also, that PR50 looks like steel rather than aluminum?

Subtle is good...did the customer let you know what speaker the 64 Dlux uses, I settled for an inexpensive Jensen P12Q and after 2 months of running in time it bloomed. After you have finished your "Tidy-up" it would be great to hear it( before and after I mean) . I got a used 64 and the wiring was much more tidy and shorter. I got a demo model from a German shop which had a Jensen Ceramic 12" which sounded good but a bit dull. All I know is that the "Bright " caps are absent unlike the old ones, I had a switch put on mine to swap from low bright to high bright and the Fender zingyness returned.
