PLEASE NOTE: This is not a tech channel, but simply a show-and-tell. It is not designed to give advice and support on vacuum tube amplifiers but to show what I get up to each week in the workshop.
I deliberately keep tech talk to a minimum, or at least to a point where it’s understandable to the casual viewer. There are other channels more suited to that level of detail.
I do not do reviews, either paid or unpaid. My opinions are entirely my own and do not represent those of others.
All comments are welcome but those deemed unhelpful, rude, inappropriate, or unsavoury will be reviewed and possibly censored.

Great presentation. Now if only we could get amp “designers” (especially of EL84 based amps) to watch it.
Of course, you can only explain it. You can’t understand it for them…
Thanks, Lyle, I appreciate it :)
Great episode! The long format is good when there is enough content, as there certainly was here. Maybe you could make an occasional longer “special” episode. I always enjoy seeing your calc sheets, and that sine wave explanation was great. Thanks.
Good video. I don't understand how the previous tech's on the Bad Cat couldn't figure out that the output tubes were biased too hot. Seemed pretty straight forward to me. I have been subscribed to Lyle's channel for several years. He was below 5k subscribers for the longest time, and then rapidly grew to 50k. You say your channel isn't really a technical one, but I think many viewers (like me) do like the technical content, as long as it doesn't get too much into the theory, but focuses on the "how to" aspects of amp problem diagnosis and repair. Your channel is the only amp related channel with regular weather reports. 😃
I agree with you that slotted screws are the worst. I once put a runaway slotted screwdriver right through a speaker cone (ouch). I have a late 1960s Traynor YVM-1 amp, built in Canada. All the screws are Robertson (square). They are the best. Like Phillips, they won't slip. Additionally, they won't strip and they remain captive on the driver.
Thanks for keeping me entertained while I service a lovely old Teac mixer. 🙂
Loved the sine wave explanation, thanks!
Love the longer video Chris, the more amping the better! :)
I've really enjoyed this longer video. I watch your channel because you don't get really technical. I have other channels I watch when I want the technical stuff.
Awesome, thank you!
I'm shocked your subscriber numbers are not significantly higher!!! I find great value and enjoyment in your efforts!
It's a slow (but organic) growth. Can''t complain!
Really appreciate your in-depth answer to my tremolo question! It's unbelievable the amount of admin that must go into a single production model of amplifier. Also I must be the only one that prefers the optical tremolos 😀
Both slotted head screws and Phillips, work of the devil! The later leads were more gained up than the earlier versions I believe...
Firstly thanks for the longer video, I saved it for my peak evening viewing. Your channel really deserves more views are you getting many from the USA? Question, on a fixed bias amp does it not help to preserve the longevity of valves to bias them slightly cooler? Good luck at Silverstone.
I forgot you like to go racing. First thing I learned about the British, put anything resembling wheels on something and they will want to race it, no?
If you ever get the racing bug you'll understand ;)
I'm so grateful for you and Lyle, Hey Lyle.
I know what you guys do is a labor of love.
I love doing it too!
Great video, and I recognised the Marshall crossover distortion immediately! I have one just like it, and I it didn't sound quite right, until I warmed the bias up.
Lyle shouted you out the other day. I bet that helped a bit.
I love slotted screws. But then again I restore old boats. Nothing nicer than a row of phosphor bronze screws with all the slots aligned, holding together beautiful pieces of wood, polished and varnished. But that's just me. But they are a pain in the arse.
Watched every minute!
I was looking forward to finding out what was wrong with the Bad Cat 😃
60 mins... now we are talking! Thanks Chris another spanking video! As an old time cabinet maker, slotted heads (Yuk)are the go to screws, however the slot must be vertical as the moisture will sit in there and rot... Personally I love the Robertson system but its not easily found in the UK.
Thanks :)
On the harmonics question, it would be interesting to see the input and output traces together - do you see the subtle difference created by the harmonics? How do those caps in the cathode circuit reduce the power output - or is that too deep?
Pretty sure I've done that already?
@@RiftAmps if you have I’ve missed it! I’ll have to go back and look.
New sub from USA, questions about the deluxe tube swapping to 6L6 what drawbacks might be if any . How much increase in output wattage would you expect last question can you do the reverse swap from 6L6 to 6V6 with a super reverb. Thanks kind sir , love all your great content
The one hour video didn’t feel any longer than your normal ones. What about a monthly one hour special, perhaps with the subject(s) being suggested by channel members? A wee free giveaway at the end could be nice too.
Liked that, but prefer the shorter format. Obvs depends on how much interesting stuff you have to share!
I've never found Chris not to be interesting... Hell, Lyle watches it (and Colleen) so there!
The first question about the roaches for tremolo, I’m assuming that all US amps imported ( and containing them) before the COSHH ruling are allowed to be used in the UK ?
I got one from TAD fitted to my Deluxe Reverb and ripped all the extra pubs out. They leave all the circuit connections in place so it's easy to modify it back to original onto spec. You can do anything you want to you amp it's just that Chris can't sell them new.
Yup, allowed to be used, it's only new production that's affected
@@RiftAmps I take it you couldn’t import a replacement roach from the US though ? So if someone had an old deluxe reverb and the tremolo stopped working because of a faulty roach, it couldn’t be repaired ?
Of course you can, the repair and maintenance of older equipment isn't affected. These rules only apply to the manufacturing of new (and repurposed) products.
Luckily, those cheap output tubes are protecting the expensive cathode resistors!
amen!
Hey Chris I'll come work with. Help me relocate from Arizona USA. It's getting to hot to live here anyway. Seriously let me know.
0.01 % female ? That must be Coleen Fazio and that’s about it.
She's very sweet. So, be nice.
Wanna boost the number of female viewers? Easy, run a competition. 1st prize a bottle of Prosecco 😂😂😂😂😂
What is it called when your reference is NOT Ground zero volts but referenced at the cathode to take measurements? This must be called something
Yeah, Vxx-K.
The same applies when measuring the B+ rail because by definition you're referencing those measurements to B- (which may or may not be chassis ground).
Don't understand why amp techs (not just you - I watched a lot of channels) don't make more use of a thermal camera? Easy to see components heat up quickly/excessively. I have a cheap attachment for my phone (Seek thermal) which works well enough.
Maybe because they're not as useful diagnostic tool and you'd think? If they were, we'd all use them!
