Peace doubting heart! My God’s I am;

he formed me and forbids me fear;

for he has called me by my name;

protects me, for he’s always near.

His blood for me did once atone

and still he loves and guards his own.
When passing through the waters deep
I ask in faith his promised aid,
the waves from drowning me he’ll keep;
he’ll cover and protect my head.
Their force and height can never scare;
they cannot harm for God is there.
To him my eye of faith I turn,
and through the fire I make my way.
The fire has no power to burn,
its harmless flames around me play.
I know his power, believe the sign.
I’m confident the Lord is mine.
Still near me, O my Saviour stand
and guard me in temptation’s hour.
Safe in the hollow of your hand
display in me your saving power.
My sure defence will be your arm
and earth and hell will do no harm.
‘Come!’, Jesus, you have called to me,
(Good as you are and strong to save.)
I’ll walk upon the raging sea
and stand upon the frightening wave;
although the rocks of pride are near,
and threatening whirlpools of despair.
When thickest darkness fills the skies
and sorrow’s waves around me roll;
when storms of passion higher rise
and overwhelm my sinking soul,
my heart a sudden calm shall feel
and hear a whisper, ‘Peace; be still!’
Though in affliction’s furnace tried,
unharmed on every snare I’ll tread.
Though sin assail; hell open wide
to pour its flames upon my head,
like Moses’ bush I’ll rise up higher
and flourish, unconsumed by fire.
