Owner of this clean 2016 Ram 1500 Hemi drove 4 hours to PHAD because he can't pass the NYS Emissions Inspection (Check Engine Light is ON), and the local shops are out of ideas...
    Multiple codes are stored, including:
    P0456-EVAP Very Small Leak
    and ABS MALFUNCTION...
The "ESIM" EVAP Vent valve and ABS Module have already been replaced...TWICE!!
So we have to address ALL the issues for the big Ram to be happy.
Let's follow the data and see if any parts are required...

The auto manufacturers have finally found a way to force people to buy new vehicles. Design parts that will fail and stop making replacements. Eventually the vehicle becomes unrepairable and you're forced to buy a new one. Genius. Although I have a few less flattering words for it. Absolutely disgusting what is going on in the automotive industry. Designed obsolescence pure and simple.

I am still rocking my 1989 Honda Crx HF that I bought new in Jan. 1989. It has over 378,000 miles on the clock and has never left me for any reason whatsoever. I do my own maintenance and am not a mechanic but can read. Today's cars scare me because I don't like feeling as if I am being played. I still get 40 degrees through the middle vents and can find any parts that I would reasonably expect to need. I don't need forty different modules to get from A to B. Plus, I get 47 mpg day in and day out. So, no dealership/stealership will see me anytime soon if I can help it. If everyone did the same, then they would quickly play a different tune.

The EPA is a major driving force behind a lot of how a vehicle is designed. Impossible mandates force EOMs into hurried, shoddy designs, then the OEMs are blamed for producing crap vehicles.

That's indicating that the manufacturer has no clue about what they are doing when making cars. ABS systems have been around since the beginning of the 1980's, so it should be off the shelf items regardless of brand.

I agree, and this line of thinking back to the early 80's when a GM factory training tech said GM builds a vehicle to last the life of the loan at that time it was about 3yrs.
Now the loans are common to be 7+yrs.

I’ve done several of those ABS modules on Chryslers and programmed them. Common fail point. Pressure sensor is internal to the HCU and is a common code and the HCU needs to be replaced since it’s not serviceable like the older units. Happy 4th.

Ivan. If you haven't fixed it already. I have the part numbers for the pins and the connectors. Also new units have to be programmed before scan data is valid. The hcu can be programmed through meritor/wabco program. Free to download. I have rebuilt plenty of the pigtails to the ecu in the past. The electric motor is usually the failure point on mechanical side and corrosion on ecu side. Check the pins, bet wires are broke

Just had a similar with a '14 F150; bad pressure sensor (inside the HCU, of course), but the electronics module was ok. Ford discontinued the ABS module altogether. Fix from dealer was a Ford-approved replacement ABS and reprogram for $3K! Solution was a used ABS module to harvest the HCU with working pressure sensor inside, swapped onto the the original electronics module. This really looks liked a planned-obsolescence campaign on the part of manufacturers!

That sensor (number 10) is going up to the vent in the filter tube. (24:15) .. You call it the fuel tank pressure sensor, but I was thinking it's the "pressure relief valve" that it keeps referring to, since it's venting to atmosphere up near the filler. I thought that vent tube would be open all the time, but apparently not... Or if you're right and that's the tank sensor, then where is the pressure relief valve? If it is just a tank pressure sensor, I don't see why it would need to be connected to the vent tube at the filler neck??? You didn't quite show the full list of parts, so I can't find which one it keeps referring to (when it says "pressure relief valve).. I guess it's built into the "multi function control valve" (14).. They call it one thing in the parts list, but then call it another in the operation break down... That makes it fun I guess. :)

Volvo charges several thousand dollar annual fee to use their diagnostic software and maintenance manual package. But each individual software download costs extra.
So if you're a smaller shop you very well may be unable to fix Volvos past 2015 that require the newest diagnostic software. (Or to perform any kind of software upgrade, you're going to have to rent the diagnostic software, which can be bought in 3 day increments for a still ridiculous fee, and pay the SW update fee). I'm not sure if this applies to bug fix updates, though. But I think some things like relearning transmission software don't need extra cost.

The dealer didn't have it in stock. It was on backorder for weeks. Got one from the local autozone. Dorman of course and it didn't work at all. Autozone sent over another Dorman unit. It worked for about a week. I and the customer are getting frustrated at that point, so I went to a local U-Pull-It yard and grabbed a few of them. First one I tried worked. That was 3 months ago, and the money light hasn't come since. It just makes you wonder how Dorman can stay in business when they keep making junk replacement parts that rarely ever work?

That junk module is from a 2014 truck. 2014-2015 have a different part number than 2016+. So you may have a compatability issue causing you not be able to write the VIN or initialize it.

On everything in OBD 2 I have ever worked on a Level Sensor code turns on MIL because of fuel volume is taken for the time base for EVAP as in air volume vs fuel level 1/8 to 7/8 in the range it takes to run evap 3/4 less air volume 3/8 more air volume in tank I hope it makes sense. You see it when smoke test how long it takes to fill system. The dorman ESIM probably cost more than the OE part as they are cheap.

Keith Perkins with L1 Automotive recently did a video on Chrysler/Fiat/Stellantis vehicles and the associated fees/ costs involved with diagnosing/repairing and all the hoops they make you jump through. I want to see just what is going to happen with programming this "new" ABS pump. Kinda makes you wonder how long a supply of parts will last, as Ivan stated.

Ask current Ford Super Duty owners how they feel about their 2024 trucks that have their a/c compressors failing & no parts available.
Now, just because the Ram abs controller isn’t currently available, doesn’t mean it won’t be in a couple months & as much as they fail, it’s probably a good thing they’re getting redesigned.

There has not been a major right to repair act in the United States, to my knowledge. It is being passed state level, but in differing ways in each state and not all of them. So it would take a federal nationwide regulation to truly force companies to make their cars repairable.

Most new cars since 2007+ are being designed for 15-20 yrs of service life. Beyond that goodluck...unlike the older cars which you can easily keep going pretty much forever if you don't live in the rust belt. Then you have companies like Dorman producing little black boxes that plug in but don't do anything, they're like the equivalent of the fake security cameras that only look real but inside they're hollow. Don't know how they can get away with it.

I had some weird ABS problems on my 2014 RAM, light came on and off, sometimes stayed on, I could not connect to the ABS module using AlfaOBD which has worked before when I needed a sensor. Checked fuse, which was OK, code went on and off 10ish times on my way to work, checked fuse again, and it was OK, however the ABS light stayed off after reinserting the fuse, has stayed off for 2 weeks. I believe my problems came from poor connection between fuse and fusebox. I have not tried to reconnect to the abs module, guess I should do that.

The module availability is one thing, the fact that certain states won't give you a little sticker so you can drive your vehicle is another....based on a CEL. That's just unbelievable to me. All the of my vehicles have a persistent CEL for a cat or small evap leak.....why would I spend the money to fix those? Cats especially would be thousands.

We had a Camry Hybid that has full electric pump controlled ABS Brake pressure module as in electric pumps run to keep accumulates loaded or no brakes it would set a internal pressure sensor code every 9 to 12 months and turn off the RR wheel fluid circuit thinking it had a leak so it would shut off that wheel. The problem was internal sensor code for RR wheel circuit only and the parts were 4000.00 USD for the pump hydraulic unit or possible it states in service info the Skid Control computer another 200.00 USD. No used units could be found and the customer said I'll live with it because of cost. You cleared code and everything worked great for maybe a year but boom one time problem lights on and turns off RR circuit. Being a hybrid special brake system and very very expensive parts and how do you tell what is failing in such a intermittent problem and service info is really for a I'm failed now problem.

Isn't new technology and government interference great! You got a nice truck with not that many miles, not very old by older standards, but you can't drive it. Government brings in regulations to screw you, don't have your back to force these auto giants to have parts, and give you a symbolic middle finger if you complain. Bend over and smile. Sickening.

I have been waiting on a abs unit from the dealership for 2 yrs now, still on backorder they say 2014 dodge journey with the 2200-49 code /internal failure,,,,abs light on traction control light on and the brake light on.....journey drives and brakes okay just no anti skid braking amovible also with these lights NO cruise control option as well......that said most of the time if i am driving it during the summer the lights come on at first but after driving it a bit, i can stop and shut off the engine and go into a store and then come out right away and then start and take off in the car the lights will stay off and the cruise control will work,,,oh well at least i dont live in a state ( ALABAMA) where we have to have the car inspected so at least i can still drive my journey also i have 160 k on it with the 3.6 engine and they sad fact is i bought the lifetime unlimited miles and yrs warranty on this journey with just a 100. ded. but the dealership wont use used parts even tho the warranty does state in the fine print that the repair parts might be new/remanufactured /used parts for their repair...I also have read that the repair of the ABS unit might can be repaired by cutting it open carefully and resoldering the surface mount components and ground connection but i dont want to try that as long as i can drive the vehicle and also doing so might give the dealership an excuse to void their obligation to do the repair

The government is so worried about the environment with emissions coming out of the tailpipe that you can't pass an inspection with the check engine light on, but how good for environment is all these vehicles being scrapped and thrown out and having to be recycled with enormous amounts of natural gas to melt down and process the materials in a vehicle when you can't get repair parts any longer after 10 years in a lot of cases for cars that would be perfectly good otherwise. Someone needs to do some serious complaining to government to either mandate parts for 20 years or do away with this inspection tag failing because of something like this meanwhile it could be putting out just fine emissions from the tail pipe and not a problem. Or it could have a spacer installed on the 02 sensor to defeat the Catalyst monitor, or better yet a rubber stamp inspection sticker from so many crooked mechanics out there... Honestly something has to give here. Not fair to the consumer AT ALL!
