Think about all you have accomplished... You all had a baby, built a house, built a woodshed and even had a garden! Amazing 🎉. It is so apparent that you all are contented because Henry is such a happy boy!
Barb and I have watched your videos ever since you moved to Alaska. We haven't made too many comments but watching this one we just had to make one. Becca, you're an awesome mother. Little Henry has seen more and done more then most children, in his short time on earth. Speaking of earth, My wife and I never laughed so hard when you were picking Potatoes. Henry had a hand full of rich soil in his hand. We both thought , "oh no, in a moment it's going to be in his mouth".😟😟 After that threat, Henry had a Potato vine , swing it around close to where you were kneeing. We thought you were going to get it in the back of your head. The whole thing was so hilarious and heart warming. It was also so great to see Henry standing up. He looked like he was dancing.❤❤Thanks for an awesome video. Congrats on the garden. We know you'll have an even better one next year👍👍. All the best and God bless🙏🙏.
Little tip on potatoes. You pile the dirt up as the potato grows and you cover up the new growth as it comes up 20cm high you cover and pile up dirt the more you do it the more potatoes you will get
Let's all of us who are watching subscribe. They never ask us to, so let's give them a bit of a boost. Such lovely people, great parents and such hard workers.
When putting my garden to bed for the winter, my husband and I would put sticks and leaves threw the chipper. I would pile the chipped material in a pile in the garden, to form compose for the spring. At the time I started doing this years ago, we had 3 easter bunnies and I would mix the rabbit terds in with the compost. It was so rich I would get little red worms which made the compost richer. You are going to be surprised at how fast the leaves break down along with the wood chips. I love the baby crawling around in the garden. The best thing for baby is having mommy and daddy working together. I miss those days.
A restaurant would love your petite carrots. You did very well with the potatoes this year. Hint - the very little potatoes will germinate in the spring by themselves. I always found potatoes from the year before growing new a year later. Well done! You have a green thumb!
Just a suggestion if you rent the skid steer again look ino renting a forestry mulcher with it and will be able to clear the same land without the piles just freshly mulch soil Theyll shred a tree for you in mins
Oh, to be young, again! I am enjoying all the work you guys are putting into your garden and, everything else. Your story reminds me of Little House On The Prarie. It's a way of life, the Pioneers established. Modern life has robbed us of so much. When you end your day, you are tired because you worked your butts of on getting established in your lifestyle. We get tired from the boredom of not being physically active as we once were. Next year will be a very good year for you because this year, you were learning and getting started. I am so happy for you three, dogs and all. Stay safe and, be happy.❤
Build some raised planter boxes, for the potatoes and tomatoes and cabbage and carrots. Use at least 18 to 24 inches of soil. You will see a big difference in production of plants
You guys are awesome, not that many people will take to off grid living, stop and take a look at all the hard work that you have done to get to where you are today, truly amazing. And your little manager sure likes the garden and even standing wow.your bob cat sure is a big help to property chores.love your channel and all content in it.cheers🇨🇦
Please rake sawdust lightly in the top soil before it gets too wet. If you don't, you run the risk of wood getting wet and binding to other pieces when drying... which will kill everything underneath. Hubby wouldn't believe me and we lost a good chunk of our newly reseeded yard this summer, cuz his friend told him i didn'tknow whar inwas talking about. Hubby hired a landscaper and they told him his friend was nuts and that it needed to be mixed or or it will act as mulch and become impenetrable.
I kept hearing crackles when you were throwing all that sawdust, kind of like it was raining..... Sure was nice to see your little man investigating your garden. He is going to be a natural at growing and driving whatever. Next spring he will want to just walk and help. I sure enjoy seeing all the progress on your place. Thanks
Love your videos! ! I save potatoes that were sticking out of ground and have green on them as my seed potatoes for the next year. I have heard that if you eat the green on potatoes, it can upset the tummy. I am so happy you got the amount you did. Carrots like sand in the soil, and at least a foot deep, I go 18 inches. Up here, it takes a lot of nitrogen. I have a feeling, Becca, as much as you like gardening and putting food up for winter, your garden will expand quite a bit over the next few years. I wouldn't put it thick, but ashes from your wood stove will help too. I saw where you met Remote Alaska, that's neat. I have met them and actually been to their cabin. They are a sweet couple too. Maybe Rowan and Henry can become friends. Keep up the great videos, I so enjoy watching them. I look forward to them each week.
Think all your dreams coming true, Henry, living in Alaska and a beautiful cabin 😊. A good harvest of potatoes in your very busy life you had so much going on. Loved seeing Henry just stand up he is so cute and very happy. Well enjoy till next week.
If you have any wood ash, not pine, from the fireplace, I would suggest you sprinkle some ome your garden. Especially where you're going to plant tomatoes and peppers 😉
The grounds been worked once so next year it will be beautiful nice plants everything will aerate better and it'll be just perfect for you thank you for sharing everything it's lovely where you're at and your house is beautiful
Well done becca with the harvest next year is gonna be much more you have done so well give yourself a pat on the back Henry is standing I thought to myself he's nearly ready to go won't be long he's so lovely nice video 👍❤❤❤👋
My dad mounded up the dirt rows for the potatoes said it made it easier to harvest in the fall. You did great for a first time. Take steel wool and rub the small potatoes and then boil them add some butter, seasoning and thicken with flour you could add some cheese . Delicious.,could also slice boil until getting soft drain and place I flat pan add seasoning. Butter and cheese let it melt great with meat, peas or beans.
Of all the babies I see on Utbe yours is the cutest. He's a real trooper. Love your cabin it looks fabulous. I bet your glad to be in it for the coming winter.
💕Girlie you have what professional gardeners would call liquid gold under your feet ~ LEAVES💕Get 4 old pallets to make a square (4 walls) & fill with leaves add a lid to keep snow out & fill add coffee grounds & tea leaves (split tea bags in half if needed) add the ash from your indoor fire you could add worms as they will help break up the leaves💕Remember to turn compost over every few months💕TRY the no dig garden method as well💕
I’m loving the garden video. I use to have a beautiful garden that did really well when I lived in PA. Here in AZ, not so much ☹️. I think I might move back to PA just so I can have a productive garden again. 🤭
AK makes good potato’s! Gotta figure out how to get more Co2 into your green house and keep it humid and warm in there during early spring and summer. Get some steer manure and mix it in with the soil. Also mix in some vermiculite to hold the water and nutrients the steer manure provides. Also mix in a bit of sand with the soil so it drains proper. You’ll have a successful grow season then. Stay safe!
Don't throw sawdust into the garden because you acidify the soil. Some plants don't like it, maybe that's why the carrots were so small. It would be better to use fertilizer, for example from under the chickens, you have to spread it now in autumn and dig up the garden in spring. Greetings from Poland
My understanding of a hugulkultcher garden is that it is not an instant garden, it grows with time as everything rots down as you add to eat each year, and normally put somewhere where you not going to ever move it. If you hold those staples with a pair of pliers it becomes a one person job without hitting your fingers in the process.
Please don’t drop the potatoes as they bruise as easily as an apple or a peach. It causes early spoiling.definitely need to be a bit deeper and we always ‘hilled’ them a couple times a year. Then let the tops die down before harvesting. Lovely crop for when you planted them.👏
Will you be cleaning the mud off the skid steer before snow comes? May save on repairs later. I know water is hard to come by but even cleaning by hand is better than nothing.
Why didn't you just turn the soil over? That would allow it to compost over winter. Lay down pine, or straw as a top mulch as additive. Heck a mulcher attachment for skid steer would allow you to just mulch stumps, limbs and small trees.
Love watching your videos.. unsure if you're able to do it. But if you could change your camera to 60 frames per second.. when you're moving around alot it causes tearing in the video...
I will say, that fence is way too short specifically over the winter. I had a short one like that around my strawberry patch. The snow completely covered it and a moose walked over it a couple times. Come spring it all had to be replaced as it was badly damaged.
Yeah we are overhauling it come Spring anyway. The cabin build took up so much time we switched from moose to dog fence for this summer. Next summer we'll finish the moose portion!
@beccanlevisalaska I totally get that! You all did great. We've owned our Alaska home for decades, so I totally understand. It's alot of work! I say that as I'm repainting all the scuffed trim, lol

It is delightful to see a young couple raising their own kids!!! I just love the wholesomeness of your channel!!!! Tyfs
Wow, you guys have accomplished so much.if you stored buckets upside down, water won’t collect, freeze and crack them.

Baby sounds are the most beautiful sounds ever. Your smiles and bantering plus baby sounds makes my whole week better!

Henry has a lot to say today. Love watching you find the potatoes. Each year is a new learning experience. Looking forward to your winter adventures.
Henry is such a gorgeous baby. I can’t watch you two because I’m enjoying watching him.
Oh my goodness! Henry is standing! Won't be long and he will be climbing cabinets and walking!❤😂
Henry is already rooted in that land. He’s a handsome little man.

The carrots are delicious baked whole in the oven with olive oil drizzled on them, sprinkled with Parmesan & pepper. 🥕

One more thing. Don’t mess around with plastic when it is below freezing.
You're not listening to him.He was telling you how to hang the fence. 😉

You need to get a hay fork to help you dig up the potatoes. Use gloves when you're digging in the dirt to avoid any diseases in the dirt.

So snow won't ruin your taters?
Turn your buckets all upside down so they won't catch water. they will bust
